Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I switched organizations and went from using Salesforce to using Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT. Salesforce was incredibly complicated, but their education system is absolutely unmatched. Anything you need to learn, there is an opportunity to truly master it. Blackbaud Raiser's …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
RE is much more user friendly (EG you don't need coding experience). It also has a lower price-point, or at least for orgs that had the self-hosted version prior to moving to NXT/cloud. There was too much time and money, not to mention training for staff, that would have gone …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Raiser's Edge NXT has an advantage because it is configured to be used by fundraisers out of the box, with no developer required. Integrated solutions reduce the need to export/import data. That said, the out-of-the-box email marketing tools are somewhat lacking--we now use Feat…
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Raiser's Edge is built for fundraising and you can tell. It is a lot easier to use and made specifically to capture pertinent fundraising data.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Salesforce is very strong with this AI and enabling staff to be more effective in their daily engagement with prospect per their goals.RE could be more competitive if they offered this support as stands part of service contract.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I prefer RE to Salesforce CMS. RE is way less complicated and has a lower barrier for entry. The training is also easier. It works better to manage real donor relationships, integrates with Outlook, pulls lists easier and has a way better email messaging tool.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I thought Salesforce was annoying but it NEVER crashed like BB frequently does, SF data was reliable and easily managed. SF had a centralized database that we trusted, not 2 similar yet not wholly connected databases like RE and NXT. I would prefer to return to SF since I know …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I have been using Blackbaud products at various organizations for 20 years, I have some experience with other systems, but have always come on board where Blackbaud was already in place.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
In my opinion, Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT is far superior to Salesforce for our particular needs. It is more user-friendly and encompasses a vast amount of data that is required to manage the needs of our constituents, which is crucial to our mission. It has become almost …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT provides a more industry-standard experience anticipated by fundraising professionals. It is a more comprehensive and well-thought-out tool and interfaces for advancing development efforts.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Two completely different things.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I did not select Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT but rather inherited it. I believe Salesforce is more customizable which, if you were involved during the implementation phase and aware of organization-specific customizations, makes for an overall better user experience and ability …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Raiser’s Edge is superior to the other products I’ve mentioned. But that doesn’t mean the other products are out of the running. There is a great deal of backend support needed for this product as well as some of the others. Some of them have less functionality, but also less …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I have used many other databases - none compare to Raiser's Edge. Many of the other systems have some features RE has but not all of them. Raiser's Edge has the ability to connect with your Donor, see their wealth screening, past donations and every detail imaginable about …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
We did not seriously consider another donor database as we were entering a pilot program with other non profits led by a nonprofit using Blackbaud products. It was viewed as easier to all be on similar products as we built out the program. However, as more affiliates have …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Blackbaud is very robust but the user-friendly portion is weak. All the other CRMs look newer, easier to navigate, and actually a pleasant experience. Blackbaud is just not easy on the eyes. TOO MANY OPTIONS.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Blackbaud is a best-in-class system...they have been doing this longer than the competition and only work with nonprofits (unlike Salesforce, which has a more general use for various industries). Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT was easy to use, has the functionality to do a lot …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I've used Salesforce in the past however Raiser's NXT to me is more updated, visually appealing and user-friendly. Also, Blackbaud just has a large array of tools we use on a daily basis so we have a contract and package with them. We currently have a Blackbaud hosted website, …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
We began with a customized Microsoft Access database and grew out of it pretty quickly as we discovered there were more ways we wanted to use our donor information. As we grew, we recognized the need to have a more robust database to follow up, monitor, and organized our gifts.
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
Raiser's Edge 7.93, Salesforce, Viking
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
I have used Patron Edge (formerly a Blackbaud product), Education Edge, SalesForce, Tessitura, and Senior Systems. I've also used a few custom CRM's in the Real Estate industry. Some of these other systems have other or multiple purposes, so they may be a better fit depending …
Chose Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT
It has been great to move to Raiser's Edge. I've worked with several systems over the years and Blackbaud's products have always turned out to be the best in the nonprofit world. Raiser's Edge was built for nonprofits -- not a business-based CRM shoe-horned for a nonprofit. …

Chose Salesforce Agentforce Sales
Raiser's Edge, CSING. Those are the primary ones. There's no competition at all. I mean, in terms of tracking duplicate contact, I mean contacts ability to be secure and provide the right access for different levels. Salesforce was able to do that. Oh yeah. Yes. Whereas the …

Blackbaud
Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT is a great fundraising tool. It is visually pleasing and straightforward for the most part. Being able to open different aspects of the database in different tabs and have reports and exports running in the background is a great time-saver. Having information tiles that you can move and reorganize used on the user means that I don't have to scroll to the bottom of a record to find out a person's giving history. If I'm working on a specific data project involving actions, I can move that tile to the top and it will stay there for just me while I'm working. It doesn't affect any of my other users' settings. Being able to send out links to gift lists to members of my fundraising team is excellent. Clicking the link brings them to the batch info and they can zero in on their prospects in the database directly from those lists. Blackbaud's Email marketing is my least favorite part because there's missing functionality I wish it had, like exporting email statistics and viewing them in general. I understand that other partners which can integrate would take care of this, but still.

Obviously, for any business, there are two main areas to focus on — the sales path and the service path. Sales Cloud wouldn’t be suited for a company that’s primarily into support services. For those kinds of companies, Salesforce has a different product — Service Cloud. So, for anyone in the support or service space, Sales Cloud isn’t the right fit.

Pros
Blackbaud
  • Blackbaud RE NXT is extremely well organized and easy to use. The simple layout and straightforward functions make interacting with the product pleasant and easy.
  • Blackbaud RE NXT's dashboards are amazing. They make reporting so easy because the dashboards convey all necessary information in an easy-to-read, unique format (depending on how you want it displayed). It is relatively easy to create a dashboard, and the options for customizing it are great.
  • Blackbaud RE NXT is great for receiving and processing donations. From the simple donation forms to the automatic batch creation, using RE NXT makes processing donations much more efficient.

  • The customizations - We have an organization that operates differently from most companies, so we’ve had to implement quite a few customizations — and Salesforce allows us to do that quite quickly. Most of the time, delays come from dependencies on other internal parties rather than the system itself.
  • From my perspective as a consultant, one of the biggest advantages is that everything is in Salesforce — all the details, all in one place. The ability to customize it easily is a big plus; there’s really a lot you can do with it.

Cons
Blackbaud
  • Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT is constantly updating and making major changes, so you never fully understand the system
  • The way some things are labeled in the system doesn't make logical sense. You almost have to learn a whole new language to get the most out of the features.
  • There's no way to re-generate a copy of a receipt, which is wildly inconvenient.
  • A lot of features are very limited based on your subscription. They give you a wide range of features but almost none of them work to their full potential. Even if you're paying a lot of money for the system, you will still likely feel like you're doing a free trial.

  • We still need to include the production part. We started using Salesforce to sell the seeds — our inventory is in SAP — and from there we handle sales and track the process of planting, harvesting, selling, and then collecting payments. But we don’t yet manage the earlier production processes, like production planning. We handle allocation, but not full production planning, and that’s an area where we still have room for improvement.

I don't know for sure what we'll do, and I wouldn't publicly share that anyways. Speaking only for myself, I wouldn't jump for joy if I was given the task of transferring CRM providers when this org has a Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT database that's 28 years old, but being aware of what's on the market is always responsible. With the planned functionality updates to Web View over 2025-2026, the phasing out of features in database view, and the changes to contract structure laid out in investor updates, there's a lot of factors that could change in the next few years. And Blackbaud has not made it clear how much work the transfer to Web View only will be for us over the next couple years: It means updating all of our policies and procedures and all of our documentation and retraining all of our employees at minimum, and that's assuming that all existing fields and features remain accessible without modification.

There are days when I wish we hadn't switched, but I know that if we put in the time, we will get to where we want to be with the software and that it has many more capabilities than anything else we looked at. However, the amount of time and onboarding we need to do is also far greater than we realized/were told when we originally bought the product. They told us we should hire onboarding support, but at the end, after we had already reached our budget maximum for this, so it's been slower than we had hoped.

Usability
Blackbaud
Learning the overall useability of Blackbaud Raiser's Edge is a fairly steep learning curve, however, the support team that Blackbaud Raiser's Edge employs are top notch, helpful and very knowledgeable. Blackbaud Raiser's Edge also maintains an extensive library of articles that are very helpful, as well a useful tutorials, including step-by-step articles as well as instructional videos. With these tools at your disposal you will be competent in no time

Because I think it could be easier. We have different standards today since we’re used to interacting with consumer apps like Starbucks, where all you do is scan your card. Then, when you use Sales Cloud, there are still a lot of manual inputs. So my mission with AI is really about figuring out how to make that easier.

Reliability and Availability
Blackbaud
The only reason I cannot give a 10 is because like all web based products, internet connection is required and that is not something that can be counted on 100% of the time. When the internet connection is stable, I have had little to no issues using Raiser's Edge.

NXT itself is a pretty simple interface, and is great for front-line fundraisers to be able to look up info and run some simple "reports"/analysis. It's very quick and intuitive, but the back-end attached to it (RE 7.96) may have connectivity issues from time to time. NXT itself, though, is simple enough that issues are rare.

Salesforce performance in general is excellent. "The cloud infrastructure beneath Force.com has been fine-tuned over the past 10 years. It powers nearly 100,000+ businesses running more than 185,000 applications that 3 million users count on every day."
Points per Salesforce -
1) Multitenant kernel - With a multitenant platform, each business that uses the app doesn’t have its own copy. Instead, all businesses share a single copy and then customize it for their specific needs.
2) ISO 27001 certified security - You can’t compromise when it comes to enterprise-level security. Force.com is road-tested and trusted by nearly 100,000+ companies, including many of the world’s most security-conscious organizations, such as banks and health care providers.
3) Proven reliability - All Force.com apps run on world-class data centers with backup, failover, and disaster-recovery facilities. Force.com has had a proven 99.9 percent uptime record for years.
4) Proven, real-time scalability - Force.com is used by many of the world's largest enterprises, including Cisco, Japan Post Network, and Symantec. Applications can automatically scale from a few users to millions of page views, as needed.
5) Real-time query optimizer - You need fast access to your data. The Force.com query optimizer delivers under 300ms response time, at a massive scale.
6) Real-time transparent system status - You can always see real-time system performance, availability, and security information at trust.salesforce.com.
7) Real-time upgrades - Unlike traditional software platforms, our upgrades never break your customizations, code, or integrations. We upgrade the platform for you 3 to 4 times each year. As a result, you’re always on the latest version, with access to the latest features, performance, and security enhancements.
8) Real-time sandbox environments - With a single click, you can create copies of your applications, configuration, and data in separate environments for development, testing, and training.
9) Three global production data centers and disaster recovery - Force.com runs on three geographically dispersed, mirrored data centers with built-in replication, disaster recovery, a redundant network backbone, and no single points of failure

Support Rating
Blackbaud
You are better off using the user community or Facebook group to get answers than the support provided by Blackbaud. Oftentimes, support reps are not even aware that new features are being rolled out, nor do they have fundraising experience so you end up explaining more to the rep about what you are trying to accomplish and why than getting to the issue.

The overall support has been good. More and more features are being released quite frequently. Very small features are also making big difference in how the tool can be adapted and used better. If there is anything we need or are stuck, the support team sets up a call and helps in resolving the issue/provides workarounds.

In-Person Training
Blackbaud
When you get a good, knowledgeable person for in-person training, you can't beat it! Hands on, real time, questions answered on the spot. And they want to make sure you get what you needed before leaving. To also have dedicated time without other distractions is very important to the learning process in my opinion.

I attended two training sessions. I would rate them a 4 as an advanced user. It was very basic – great for someone new – would give 8+ for new person.

I had 3 years of experience at the time. I skipped basic and went onto advanced and still not helpful. A lot of it was best practices that didn’t feel relevant for our business

Online Training
Blackbaud
The content is solid, but for those who benefit from in-person interactions, it can be a bit challenging. While the online format is great for flexibility and accessibility, there’s something about face-to-face training that makes it easier to absorb and ask questions in real-time. Overall, though, it’s a solid resource for self-paced learning.

I can't recall many specifics, mostly due to my own limited use of the entire NXT range of functions. One thing that I dislike is that when previous "Contact Reports" (Talisma term) were imported the dates were all converted to show as the date that they were imported into NXT, rather than the original dates they were entered into the old CRM. During the implementation, similarly, a few batches of Actions were re-dated to show the date of the batch transfer or update (not from the old system, I believe).

Just from an organizational standpoint - we standardized our data prior to moving to Salesforce. But we essentially standardized it wrong. That's created a big disgusting mess for us know that I'll have to deal with as the Admin. Be sure you think through use cases prior to doing something like that - seek outside opinions on how the data will work best, especially depending on what else you're going to integrate with Salesforce.

Alternatives Considered
Blackbaud
I have not used other products like this before. I have used and created some SQL databases and ERPs, but have not used fundraising-specific software such as Raiser's Edge. Based on what I know from other products vaguely similar to this - databases and ERPs - this is very user friendly and easy to pick up for anyone, especially with their NXT webview offering.

Salesforce
So I've evaluated, implemented Microsoft Dynamics in the past. I've used Oracle CRM solutions. I've used Daylight, which is a very niche CRM system the last couple of years. And I've evaluated a variety from Legacy Microsoft Ones to Zoho and Sugar when making implementation decisions at other companies. But usually I've gone with Salesforce. I'd say it's better than most. The only one that I generally prefer, and last time I chose an implementation from scratch, I did Microsoft Dynamics. And the reason is for small mid-size organization, Microsoft Dynamics, if you already have Microsoft Office products, it's much better integrated to all of the Excel, Word, OneNote, Outlook email than what you get from Salesforce. And so that's the only one that if someone's a Microsoft organization and small sized company, it'll save a lot of integration things, a lot of security, a lot of login and access and IT management by just sticking within the Microsoft ecosystem. But outside of that, if you don't use Microsoft or if you're a large organization or have other needs that you want, Salesforce I'd say is better than all of the other CRM offerings out there. It's the easiest to use and the most robust and the most vendors and products for the ecosystem.

Pricing really seems to be all over the place, and everything else you need is an extra add-on cost. The biggest issue is training. Options are limited unless you subscribe and pay for it across your contract.

Salesforce is the most widely used CRM system. Professionalism tends to increase when things go wrong for market leaders. Salesforce considers us as users because they own the market. Scalability
Blackbaud
New features are constantly being added to Raiser's Edge NXT that expand its capabilities. Features such as constituent mapping and easily accessible actions allow for more in-depth analysis of existing constituents. The future ability to manipulate soft-credits and customize reporting dashboards will make NXT even more attractive to our fundraisers and executives. It's great to see that the software is evolving.

It's very scalable as it has a ton of features (but you do need an admin who understands how to leverage these features). Because of the various features, we've also needed to host onboarding sessions with our users so that they can familiarize themselves with the platform, which isn't always super user-friendly or intuitive.

Using Salesforce.com has made my daily routines more efficient and simplified the manual tasks I had to perform independently. I can now access data from any device, online or offline, and provide better guidance to my team about the forecasts provided by the built-in artificial intelligence (AI). A chat with a Salesforce support specialist would be great. The knowledge base has a community forum where Salesforce users can ask questions and learn more about the product.

Return on Investment
Blackbaud
  • Having everything in one system means that information is much more likely to be up to date. We hardly get any returned mail from the post office when we pull lists.
  • Our gift officers can easily pull up donor information on their phones while out on a visit, giving them the edge they need to close a gift.
  • Information tiles on a person's record that are easy to reorganize and collapse per the needs of each user makes finding pertinent information quick.

  • It allows me to keep a close eye on all of my performance metrics through the Dashboard Reporting, ie what my sales pipeline looks like, how much it's changed in the last 60 days, new opportunities created in the last 7 days, # of emails sent for the week, etc. The ease of the design and output make it really easy to check my progress throughout the day to find where I have holes and am falling short on my personal and work goals. It's resulted in greater transparency with my Mgmt Team and shorter 1-on-1 mtgs with my boss as he can see exactly where I am at all times (to be fair, I'm a senior sales rep, so he pretty much lets me do my job completely unfettered), but it does prove that I am continually producing which recently resulted in a raise I didn't even ask for.
  • The SF repository is so detailed that I don't have to spend tons of time finding frequently used websites attached to a client or see what all interactions with the company look like. Even though I don't use SF for my bulk emails and email sequences, SF provides me with an email to use in the bcc of these emails which links everything back to SF. I find that extremely helpful. This really impacts my efficiency and I can honestly say that once I started using all the functionality of data management, it saved me about 20% of my time/week that I could then allocate towards other revenue-generating tasks like prospecting and account management. The more time I have for those, the better. My year-over-year on accounts 1 year and older just grew by 17% this last year.
