What is IBM Storage Fusion?

IBM Storage Fusion is the foundation for container-native applications running on Red Hat OpenShift, which provides enterprise grade data-storage and protection services. This solution includes data services that are critical for global enterprise applications and a data driven Red Hat OpenShift environment.

IBM Storage Fusion is built on a technology that provides global access to data to container applications. The application sees the data as another local file structure. The data can be physically located in another data source, thousands of miles away. This global data access includes S3 object data from the cloud or on-premises, Network File System (NFS) data from Dell/EMC, Netapp, or other vendors and any IBM Spectrum Scale compatible storage system.

IBM Spectrum Fusion has built-in, application-aware backup and recovery. By leveraging IBM Spectrum Protect Plus containerized software that is built into Spectrum Fusion, ITOps can have a consistent way to not only backup Red Hat OpenShift container environments but also leverage the same interface to backup VMWare or RedHat OpenShift VM environment. This is the meaning of IBM Spectrum Fusion software's “fused” storage services and storage platform solution.

Data Analytics is major impact on business decision and optimizing the business flow. To understand the gap multiple database & data types have to be linked and accessed properly to develop a business case life cycle. And IBM Storage Fusion helps here to connect multiple types of databases and also helps in data-mapping between multiple data sets to develop a complete life cycle of a business use-case.
  • Connecting with multiple application DB of different data types and bringing the normalized data to on a roof/data lake
  • Easy to build the models and analytics that's help better understanding of business operation
  • AI models such as predictions, forecasts, and suggestions based on individual customer patterns or geo-clusters can build easily
Cons
  • Existing AI models should be able to utilize to other use cases
Every new user has to get hands-on to start utilizing it Optimal.
Once user understands to implementing process and technical configuration, the user will get optimal usage of IBM Fusion.
Best part of IBM fusion are, easy to connect with DB(different types), Security features, creation of a data layer(as per requirement) on top of application data.
  • Database connection on configuration and clicks
  • Creating Data layer on applications
  • Data access control and privacy policy configation
  • IBM Fusion is ideal for Enterprise businesses or Ecosystems where large data types are in play. And added benefit to bringing them under a platform to add visualization and understanding.
  • Managing and monitoring is easy when compare to other industry tool
Either Hadoop or Cassandra provides better reporting & analytics on multiple data variant but creating required data layer on these platform requires lot of coding or development effort which are easily available in IBM Fusion.
Managing these environments(Cassandra or Hadoop) requires high tech skill and continuous monitoring whereas IBM Fusion provides an interface for monitoring and alerts just in case.

IBM Storage Fusion was used mainly for our machine learning model training and artificial intelligence. We have implemented multiple models and did see a good performance , simple to use and easily scalable. Setup and configuration was also at ease. Having our datalake platform here was a plus. Availability in cloud makes it more flexible.
  • Machine learning model training and execution was at ease
  • Performance was good
  • Highly scalable
Cons
  • Add more in-built model templates
  • Visualization option would be plus
  • Enable more reports to add more metrix on usage
I think its well suited for all modern programming. simple and ease of use are a plus.
  • Access management
  • Governance
  • Support and security
  • Ease of use
  • Helps to add more value in our data analytics
  • Increased the overall efficiency in reporting
  • Easy to support and maintain

It added HCI capabilities to our portfolio with a primary focus on applications centric to Openshift and the path forward to cloud integration and the beginning of the cloud journey.

The shift of technology from costly management of traditional SAN/Storage and the challenges natively faced during the daily administrative process is one of the business challenges addressed and resolved through IBM Storage fusion.

To start Devops journey with IBM fusion storage.

  • Well integrated with IBM Maximo in Openshift
  • Native cloud applications
  • resilient data fabric network with inbuild storage to cater the needs of rapid data growth
Cons
  • Improvement in areas where Software Defined Storage (SDS) can be better utilized with the broad capabilities of IBM storage features.
  • Focus should be shifted towards enabling capabilities of cyber resiliency as the other offerings in the market are already equipped with the same.
  • Broader non-IBM/Lenovo hardware support can be considered, specifically for IBM Storage fusion software offerings
1. In a real-time scenario, IBM left customers of Maximo with no choice but to use the product with Red hat openshift only

2. Perfect fit for SMB's workload with all the capabilities of HCI and cloud-native applications through RH openshift containers

3. Finally, the integration of IBM's own backup solution left customers with no choice of using and integrating non-IBM backup solutions which the customer is already familiar.
  • Cloud native applications
  • Openshift close integration and support for IBM products.
  • smoothened the process of developing new features in the existing products after migration as one single plane of console does all the job
  • Reduced the cost in managing a dedicated storage environment
  • On the other side, few licenses like existing backup cann't be used instead we have to rely on IBM offerings
VMware vSAN has extensive features in comparison to IBM Fusion storage, but it doesn't have the capability of integrating Redhat Openshift with the application. In addition, IBM offering is a cost-effective solution in the market.

Considering the stable IBM storage portfolio with a broad variety of offerings, in consideration with competitors
