Intellimagic provides software as [service] delivery of our mainframe performance data. Using intuitive customizable screens and dashboards all available metrics are available for trending, comparison, or detailed analysis.
  • Comparison of current charts with relevant historical charts (i.e., this Monday vs. Last Monday).
  • Starting with general charts and drilling into detail.
  • Providing a single intuitive interface to all of your data.
  • Anomaly Detection based on thresholds
  • The voluminous data is a challenge for all tools. As always, improved response time is always appreciated.
  • I really appreciate reading the descriptions and field descriptions that are provided with the screens. All additional elaborations will be appreciated.
  • Monthly trending and cyclical pattern detection
Intellimagic is great for organizations [onboarding] junior staff OR for organizations with skilled experts simply trying to do more with less labor.

We use IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS on a daily basis job of looking at bottleneck and performance problems. Also, for a better design and understanding of our environment. They have been helping us a lot in the post-mortem analysis.
  • Storage Bottleneck
  • Drill downs
  • Correlations analysis
  • Tape performance
  • New IBM Boxes
  • Better reports about switches and directors, mainly about SAN
  • Better understanding of HDS hardware
I give them a 10 our of 10. IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is a unique software doing what it does so well; there is no other on the market.

IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is a fantastic tool used by our team to make strategic decisions when it comes to performance or capacity changes within our environment. IntelliMagic has become a tool we use every day and is simple to use. We use it to check the status of everything within the CEC to DASD and Tape.
  • Creating customized reports
  • Exporting reports
  • Granularity
  • A better graphical representation of system setup
More appropriate to keep an eye on the system. It might not be LIVE but it is a great tool to look at specific data points and points in time where an issue maybe reported. For example, our team used IntelliMagic to look at DASD port intensity and was able to see there was a faulty port within the DASD.

This became a game changing product for us. We have been using traditional SAS/MXG to create PDB's and pull the reports which use to take tons of time, with IntelliMagic we are more focused on tunning and analysis then cleansing SMF data to create reports.
  • Reduction in SMF processing time
  • predictive capability to avoid any outages related to infrastructure
  • long term trending ability
  • forecasting ability
  • Billing comparison options
  • Alternate products with the pricing options
More time spent on performance tuning and analysis than creating PDB's. In house requires an additional windows support team to help the product,

Use IntelliMagic Vision to provide reports/graphs on utilization and identify top targets for tuning or realignment based on peak 4HRA.
The key business problem the product addresses is Mainframe cost containment/avoidance, either thru identifying Mainframe tuning inefficiencies or avoiding batch contention during peak utilization periods.
  • Identifies the top batch users during the peak 4HRA period
  • Provides health check snapshots for various Mainframe metrics
  • Provides quick insight for incident resolution
  • Lack of insight into IMS utilization at a transactional level
  • Lack of a detailed User Guide for navigation of VIsion
Well suited for when a quick chart needs to be generated, or a chart showing a metric over an extended period of time.

Might be less appropriate where trying to categorize based on Line of Business ( for internal chargeback, for example ). While it can be done, more difficult than a programmatic mapping solution.

We offer mainframe education and consulting services. For the education side of our business, IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is ideal because it helps us illustrate the concepts that we are presenting to the students in our classes. Its clean and powerful user interface allows us to focus on the meaning of the data that is being presented, rather than spending valuable time on how to use the tool. For the consulting side, if the client is an existing IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS customer, either on-premises or using the Cloud offering, we are able to work collaboratively with the clients' technicians to investigate questions they might have or anomalies that we might discover. In today's world, where everyone works remotely, the ability to quickly and easily pass reports back and forth nearly has the effect of working together on a shared PC. For clients that do not have IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS, IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS allows us to provide them with reports for all major system components with a common look and feel. Once again, they can concentrate on the information being provided, and we avoid the complexity of having to learn and use many different tools.
  • The provision of hundreds of sample reports, combined with the ability to drill down from each report, is both powerful and a real time-saver.
  • I love the ability to take an existing report, customize it to my needs, and quickly export it to a PDF or Powerpoint, or spreadsheet.
  • The Health Insight reports are great for helping me quickly hone in on aspects of system performance that require further investigation, without having to browse through hundreds of reports that simply report that everything is 'normal'.
  • I wish that the CPU reports would show CPU utilization for LPARs that are not included in the set of SMF records that were provided.
  • I wish the axis labels were a lot larger, so my old eyes could read them.
  • I would love the ability to easily import and export report definitions from one IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS instance to another.
  • I would love to be able to see which SMF fields were used for each of the values that IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS provides.
  • I would love to be able to create a report containing metrics from more than one IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS table.
IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is perfect for just about any after-the-fact analysis that I have tried to use it for. Sometimes it doesn't provide support for the latest SMF fields, but that is the nature of SMF data analysis - it is impossible to keep up with the rate at which new SMF fields are added. Combine that with the fact that the description of new fields is often poor, and it is amazing that IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is as up-to-date as it is. I think that less experienced users might benefit from material that more clearly differentiates products like IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS, which feed off SMF data, and products like Omegamon, which report in real-time contents of various system control blocks.

I use IntelliMagic Vision to analyze the peaks of mainframe cpu usage. IntelliMagic Vision has helped me to find opportunities to reduce cpu usage by focusing on key days of the month and key hours. Some of the reports have uncovered things I was simply not aware of. When there are many things that could be addressed it is helpful to see what will have the most impact.
  • Allows engineers to search by whatever SMF data is relevant at that point in time
  • Saves your past searches and allows you to refine them without needing to start over.

using IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS helps me to choose areas for optimization and also aids me in understanding how to configure for the future.

Monitoring and improving our storage environment (disk and tape). Identifying potential problems at an early stage. Identifying trends in the use of resources.
  • The information from Vision is input for our monthly reports.
  • It helps us decide on the purchase of new hardware.
  • Provide clear graphical overviews of disk and tape usage, performance and deviations.
  • Expand with functionalities for z/VM and Linux for Z.
  • Perhaps an app for mobile devices?
We run Vision on the mainframe instead of a Windows server. The SMF records are processed in the batch at night. So there is always a delay in reporting. The way it has been implemented in our company is not suitable for online monitoring. We are going to investigate whether migration to a Windows server is possible.

Used for daily monitoring of z/OS CPU utilization and fact finding on capacity and trending for future capacity needs. Also used to identify potential tuning opportunities within both applications and infrastructure.
  • Ease of creating reports
  • Organization of metrics
  • Full array of metrics available
  • Easy to understand and interpret reports
  • Logic for specific selection of items is confusing (i.e., job id =1234 or 2345 and job class = Y)
Works great for discovering infrastructure tuning opportunities. Useful to identify specific jobs whose CPU utilization is high or outside of a trend or normal range.

We use it for capacity planning and general knowledge about our systems; how they're running, common issues, how we can improve performance, etc. So far IntelliMagic has [been] very helpful when it comes to see[ing] long term trends and new problems we are starting to see as a result of growth. The ability to dive deep into the graphs is something that is provided only by IntelliMagic, no other monitoring software, real-time or not, has that ability.
  • Deep Dive
  • Long Term Trends
  • Potential Issues and Current Issues with zOS
  • Real Time/Near Real Time Data Ingestion/Processing
The only reason I give it a 9 vs a 10 is because of the near-real time data processing. Other than that, IntelliMagic is very critical to our success as a team. If we don't have those graphs showing us systems trends and problems, we can['t] plan ahead for the future.

We use [IntelliMagic] Vision [for z/OS] to provide information for our mainframe disk environments. [IntelliMagic] Vision [for z/OS] provides many reports to help us understand our disk performance activity. This insures that we provide the best response time to the mainframe. It also provide us insight to capacity planning as well.
  • Provide dashboards
  • Report on I/O activity
  • Provide color codes for problem areas
  • Maybe - solutions based on problems [IntelliMagic] Vision [for z/OS] detected
[IntelliMagic] Vision [for z/OS] is a great product to report on many aspects of disk performance. We use Hitachi and Hitachi provides a tool (MAR) to provide RMF records to report on [their] internals. [IntelliMagic] Vision [for z/OS] uses that data to produce reports. I find them very helpful and [they] provide further info other than data provided by RMF. It does provide insights for CPU and z/OS as well [even] though we don't have the license to do so. I can't think of a better product for disk performance reporting and analysis.

Decades in the past, we implemented our performance analyses ourselves with RMF reports and our own consolidation programs. Some skills are retired and we looked for performance reporting tools. We attended performance courses at IntelliMagic and were very impressed by the skills of the speakers and the tool. In addition to intuitive operation, IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS offers standard reports that can be easily adapted to your own requirements. The rating of analyses with the expert knowledge of IntelliMagic are important. Also explanations about the source of the data and the calculations are available on each report. We started with a test installation of the DASD analyses and then decided to use them. Then we gradually expanded the functions (system, CF, XCF, MQ, TCP/IP and tape). This year Db2 was added and we have replaced and optimized SAS programs with IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS. IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS helps experts and beginners at DATEV better understand and improve performance and also configuration details.
  • IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is easy to use for beginners and experts.
  • Search and drill down helps to find overview and deep dive.
  • IntelliMagic has implemented expert knowledge into Vision and the rating of the report is really helpful.
  • Predefined reports can be modified very easily and individually adapted reports (replacement of old SAS programs) are also possible without any problems
  • Most enhancement requests to IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS were implemented really fast.
  • Collections and dashboards (private and shared). "Change All" of Date/Time ranges or filters to collections and/or dashboards would help.
  • We changed from daily data processing to hourly data processing (near realtime). More granular intervals are desirable.
  • Hundreds of predefined reports that can be easily customized to meet business requirements.
  • Intelligence with the rating of the numbers, statistics, and charts.
  • Experts can do a deep dive; beginners can easily use and learn IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS.
  • Old SAS Programs can implement and optimize IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS.
  • Excellent support by IntelliMagic Team.
  • IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS can be implemented local (managed by customer), local (managed by IntelliMagic), or as cloud service.

IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is being used at our organization to better monitor and manage/tune our non-prod and production mainframe WLM, z/OS systems, DB2, CICS, MQ, Disk, Virtual Tape, and FICON Director resources. IntelliMagic is used by our systems programmers, capacity and performance engineers, DB2 systems programmers, CICS/MQ technicians, and Storage Management (disk and tape) engineers in our mainframe infrastructure teams. Using IntelliMagic helps our teams optimize our mainframe infrastructure solutions to support our mission-critical business applications. Our organization's mission is to do everything we can to service our members, healthcare providers, and business partners.
  • Provides comprehensive Health Check and Exception reporting of mainframe resources.
  • As a Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud solution, IntelliMagic Vision allows our infrastructure engineers to use the tool to manage our resources - rather than managing the installation/customization, and upgrade of the tool itself.
  • IntelliMagic allows our organization to build on the wealth of IBM's SMF statistical data, providing a 'force multiplier' effect that empowers our organization's technical staff to learn much more about the resources they're responsible for managing simply by using the tool's intuitive navigational interface.
  • IntelliMagic improves our mainframe infrastructure team's productivity and collaboration/cohesiveness through shared dashboard technology.
  • We've uncovered a few bugs in more-complex calculations in a few reports in IntelliMagic Vision that we've needed the vendor to address.
  • We've experienced minor issues with having to occasionally retransmit (FTP) our statistical data to IntelliMagic's cloud servers.
  • Periodically, we've experienced "lags" in the turnaround time from when our SMF statistical data is cut, to the time we're able to view the data in the IntelliMagic Vision tool.
  • The quality of the downloadable/exported reporting charts from IntelliMagic Vision needs to be improved to the point we'd feel comfortable with using those report images in executive leadership PowerPoint presentations. The image quality of IntelliMagic Vision graphs/charts needs to be comparable to those we can produce in MS Excel.
IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS is an excellent comprehensive mainframe reporting tool that can ingest raw SMF/RMF statistical data, tape management configuration (TMC) data, DCOLLECT data, and proprietary ISV SMF data (Hitachi Mainframe Analytics Reporter SMF records, Oracle VSM SMF data) unlike any other product on the market. The reporting capabilities of IntelliMagic Vision is also best-in-class across all mainframe domains. No other historical mainframe reporting tool in the market can compete with IntelliMagic vision in terms of health/exception reporting, the "Change Detection" reporting - i.e., the ability to compare performance data across data points in statistical terms, and in terms of easy-to-use out-of-the-box (OTB) reports, as well as user-customizable reporting capabilities.

IntelliMagic Vision is not a 'real-time' reporter such as Omegamon in that IntelliMagic consumes IBM SMF/RMF data that is DUMPd of SMF log streams, compressed, and FTPd to IntelliMagic's cloud server environment. However, IntelliMagic Vision can be considered as a 'near real-time' reporting facility - as long as the client installation can build the necessary automated infrastructure to "feed" their statistical data to IntelliMagic over several shorter (e.g., 1/2-hour or one-hour) intervals. Our typical turnaround time is about 1.5 hours from the time we create/cut statistical data to the time we can see the statistical reports based on that data in the tool - sometime that lag is even less than 1.5 hours.
