Overall Satisfaction with Rubrik
Rubrik is a backup and data security product. We use it for exactly those purposes. servers, databases, local and remote resources. we wanted something that's intuitive, just works, and has excellent support. We backup SQL databases, SAP HANA, VMware and Hyper-V VMs and Active Directory.
Pros
- Backs up hypervisor VMs such as VMware as well as live mount backups without having to do full restores
- Backs up SQL databases at very fine granularity including tlog backups. it also handles SQL DAGs very well.
- Backs up SAP HANA using centralized management and integrates with BackInt
- Ransomware detection such as detecting large numbers of file changes or deletions in folders, finding malware based on hashes and rules, and giving you point in time recovery
- Sensitive data discovery such as HIPAA, PII, banking info, etc so we know what folders and files need permissions changes
- Rubrik's support model is the best. you can call or email or open a ticket in the portal. they are fast to respond, patient and very knowledable. their product and support portal provide lots of pertinent tips and detailed explanations.
Cons
- Reporting is good but could be better, particularly real time in the UI. They need more ability to sort and filter beyond what they already have.
- SQL restores have lots of options but not restoring as a .bak file
- they have Active Directory restore procedures but I'd like to see that functionality built into the UI instead of partially using an outside tool.
- We spend less time on backups now than before. Less FTEs for managing backups.
- Rubrik has helped us recover everything after a cyber attack.
rubrik is much easier to deploy and manage. in so many ways. support is much better. sales is much better. customer involvement and response for features is much better. commvault is more granular but that hasn't hurt us. it takes less time to add new instances and less time on support tickets.

Using Rubrik
7 - There are three infrastructure engineers who handle configuration and can do any restore types. There is one DBA who can do restores of our databases as desired. There is one working manager who can help handle roles and responsibilities in Rubrik. And there are 2 IT security people who can handle TPR requests, ransomware responses, and sensitive data discovery.
3 - There are three of us who can support Rubrik regularly but one person is the primary that does the majority of the work. The rest are for when he is unavailable or if they are doing their own work. No one had formal training as the product was intuitive and there is ample documentation and videos to watch on their education portal.

- We have other primary ransomware detection applications on our systems but rubrik can also detect unusual amounts of changes on systems. This has helped in the past.
- Rubrik can search all backups for a particular file name or hash for both restores and detection of malware and very easily.
- Rubrik has both a cloud management portal and local instances so in the event internet access is off we can still manage things locally.
- We are looking to expand our sensitive data discovery process and Rubrik is adding features here. It's a lot of work to investigate the number of servers we have.
- Rubrik will give us the ability to recovery environment copies into an isolated network for testing full recovery scenarios.
Evaluating Rubrik and Competitors
Yes - We replaced Commvault for many reasons. One was complexity. It was far too complex and required too much time to troubleshoot issues. We also moved off of disk to cloud based archivals. The Commvault team was changing frequently and Rubrik's sales and support teams stood out above everyone else. Rubrik was also very easy to setup in remote offices.

We wear many hats in IT and Rubrik was a very simple to deploy solution that had an excellent support and upgrade model allowing us to not spend nearly as much time troubleshooting and maintaining the product as before. Rubrik was web based and had lots of easy to use features.
There's not much that we would change in our selection and evaluation process. We looked at multiple vendors, submitted many dozens of questions to get feedback, did many demos and spoke with other customers to see their experience. We felt like we did a very thorough job. It was a different model by purchasing their storage and software but we felt that would help resolve issues by having one vendor for both.

literally every support ticket is great. but we had data loss once (not Rubrik's fault) and their backend engineers helped undo the loss of backups
