ADP TotalSource

ADP TotalSource is my company's PEO. Being an HR department of one, the support I received from the was worth its weight in gold. They have so many resources already in place that I was able to make use of instead of researching and creating myself. One part of having them as a PEO that I wasn't a fan of, was the limitations we had in choosing our benefit carriers. They had contracts with two health carriers to choose from. So if we weren't happy with rates, there was only so much room to negotiate, at the carriers knew that.

Justworks

Justworks is great for a small business with a remote work force, limited resources for HR and benefits but with the need to stay compliant and offer competitive benefits. For larger companies I don't know that Justworks would be the best fit and it may be better to go with an all in one system that can manage multiple aspects of HR including performance, recruiting, and benefits.

Pros

  • The prebuilt reports were excellent
  • TotalSource came with the Employee Service Center support - the best part of TS
  • The software integrated with our time keeping system which made payroll a little easier

  • The benefit choices with Aetna are excellent and very easy to for our employees to choose and renew.
  • Payroll is a no-brainer, very easy to set up and manage.
  • If you ever have a problem or need to speak to someone you have a dedicated account representative or you can get a hold of someone any time. They are very responsive via email or phone.
  • Affordable, I checked out many PEOs before going with Justworks, their prices are great for the services they provide.
  • They are always adding new services and benefits.

Cons

  • I wish that there was a feature that would allow you to do some financial planning with your money.
  • If you can't remember your password or username, it is really hard to retrieve and they always take a long time to get back to you.
  • One other con is that it is not always the easiest to navigate and sometimes you don't realize that you have gone to a different screen and then it gets you out of everything and you have to do the log in process all over. This would be more of an issue if you were using a computer instead of the mobile app.

Alternatives Considered

We use ADP simply to to track pay for employees. We really like more of the functionality of Workday as it is really easy to import org charts and track performance. The graphics and appearance of these sections are also really nice! We also use Workday to track time off as it was more popular among employees to use when we asked them to compare more options. However, ADP is much better at tracking pay and because it carries information over from previous jobs, employees really like this as well!

Our review of alternatives concluded that ADP TotalSource is too expensive, too complex and lacks transparency, even for large companies. TriNet was much better, but post-acquisition it too has become less agile. Paychex isn't as comprehensive. There are literally dozens of others and you can spend a year just reviewing them all.

Return on Investment

  • It has helped us to keep track of various financial information for employees and this has helped our HR department.
  • We were trying to find a system that was more user-friendly and many people are able to use this pretty easily.
  • We found more cost effective methods to do absence management and goal setting because this system was too expensive and cumbersome for us.

  • We're still new to Justworks, but for nearly everyone on our team, this is the dealmaker. Benefits plans are worth more than salaries to the best hires.In fact, part of the process we used to choose Justworks was to send their offering, in advance, to our team to approve of, first.
