Cision is well suited for PR staffs, either at a brand or agency level, especially those that are actively executing outreach programs at a national, state or local level. Cision doesn't necessarily replace manual list development or building PR relationships, but it gives PR personnel a significant head start on where and with whom to begin targeted outreach.

Muck Rack

MuckRack is best at getting a good picture of one person's interests and what they like to write about. It helps me build very specific media lists. I don't spray and pray with my outreach. Everything is very targeted and MuckRack lets me find exactly who could be receptive to my story.

  • The Vocus PR Suite has an extensive media outlet database so it allows public relations and communications professionals to find the right media outlets and contacts for any media market in the United States and for just about any specialty or trade news media.
  • The Vocus PR Suite is very user-friendly. It's easy to navigate and find what you need, plus offers a lot of options for how to organize your contacts and media lists.
  • The customer support team at Vocus is always very helpful and gets back to you quickly when you need assistance. Vocus also offers online/teleconference training classes plus a great help section within the portal that contains articles and "how to" videos.

  • Bios: love being able to search bios, including confirming beats and interests.

  • Not every article is automatically picked up. Some major papers get skipped some of the time, even when the proper keywords are present.
  • Some articles/outlets are delayed in when the system retrieves them. Some articles come through from years ago, that do not match the date filter requirements.
  • Building reports to graphically look how you would like is not easy to do as a user, without requesting customer assistance help.
  • Customer service/account rep is not always the most attentive to your needs. It could take days or weeks to get a response sometimes.
  • Expensive!

For all of the reasons I had mentioned before, I haven't found a product that surpasses what they offer. I will maintain renewing with them for a few years and then reexamine the market to see if any new competitors arise. Until then, I have no reason to leave them for someone else.

It's improved a lot. I used a much earlier version of Cision several years ago -- before I switched to Vocus and then moved back to Cision this past September. By the time I came back to Cision, the user interface has been simplifed and the product has become much more user-friendly.

Generally, Cision performs well day to day, but it's got some annoying bugs that slow down usage/require user workarounds which is inefficient. More seriously, a few months ago, as a result of a major system upgrade, certain critical functionality was not working and I was unable to use the service for more than a day when I had time-sensitive work to execute

I cannot always get a hold of someone who is fully familiar with all aspects of the system. I've actually received incorrect information when seeking technical support. And immediately following a recent major system upgrade that disrupted some key functionality, the customer service was atrocious. Although I later found out that the company was aware of the problems and working to correct them, I never received any type of notification and, instead, wasted a lot of time trying to figure out the problem. It was frustrating and I was unable to perform some time-sensitive work.

I'm sure it's fine. I have never used their customer support, not even when a list does not save. I just figured there isn't much they can do since it was a search. They do have live chat to get answers quickly but most of the time I'm working on lists after hours (since it's a lot of admin and I can do it front of the TV) and no one is available.

While certainly not perfect, Cision's media contacts were the most up to date and accurate, and their site was easiest to navigate. The beat descriptions for all of them could be better though, and none offer a way to thoroughly search for drive time radio shows that do interviews each day.

Muck Rack tends to have contact information for a wider range of individuals, and the search feature in the Muck Rack interface is very easy to use. It has a lot of different filters that enable specific and effective searches. I do wish though that I could save location based searches more easily.

Return on Investment

  • The ROI is immeasurable. The amount of time you save using Cision compared to using the Internet to not only find the right reporters to contact but how to contact them (their email and or phone number) is hard to determine, but in some instances, for a big project, I don't believe it's a stretch to say that it can save you weeks of work hours.
  • Cision is a cost-effective tool, period. Rather than putting the time in to research media on your own, or paying a PR agency to build media lists and contact reporter for you, Cision will save the company thousands of dollars annually.
  • I don't think there is a negative impact on ROI for any Cision customer, and they will work with you to find a program that works for you -- i.e. if you are a non-profit, school, or small business, they scale the package to find something that will be affordable.

  • It's hard to measure ROI but I can say this: I have discovered and build relationships with media I may have had a hard time locating before. MuckRack has probably increased my efficiency by 50 percent and doubled my effectiveness.
  • I haven't looked a media databases in about 2 years but it is a much more cost effective media database than the big, traditional ones that everyone else has.
