Dataloader.io

Data migrations, in general, will be more efficient when using Dataloader.IO. You will find that you are able to queue up several extractions at the same time, or several inserts/updates at the same time, which is great. Inserts/Updates or Extracts are called tasks in Dataloader.IO. You can increase efficiency when you queue up several tasks at the same time, and you will not slow down your PC since this is cloud-based.

DemandTools

The tool is absolutely sufficient for accomplishing data manipulation tasks. I can't think of an example of a task I wanted to but could not execute within Demand =Tools. However, due to some of the issues with UI and the need for a VM to use the tool, I am incredibly hesitant to roll this out to other users. As a result, until there is a large need for someone to operate with their own license, all work is funneled through me. This is less than preferable, but I ran into so many issues with our Marketing Ops person when getting him set up with the tool that I'm wary to do it again.

Pros

Dataloader.io

  • The selection of objects is much better and more extensive than the Salesforce built in data loader.
  • Cross referencing of fields for record IDs is easy to use. I can work through this so much more quickly than using the built in Salesforce data loader.
  • Success and error files are easy to identify what needs to be fixed (errors) and identification of records created (successes), so you can quickly do spot checks in your Salesforce org after doing a data load.
  • The number of rows per month for a basic package, 100,000, is great for our business.

DemandTools

  • Report/Find IDs is the hidden gem of DemandTools. It is basically a super fast vlookup against your entire database. Easily add data to a report or find the records that match a list. I used this feature extensively when migrating data to a new org to do a compare numbers.
  • Data export by object is so easy and the ability to pull data from any related object is powerful. I find myself using data export more then running reports in SF because it's so much faster and hugely flexible.
  • Every module has clear steps and in-line help.

Cons

Dataloader.io

  • At the moment, I can't find a way to rename jobs. This would be useful to organize what was previously created hastily by techs in a rush.
  • A preview of the job, especially upserts, would take a great deal of stress away from some of us (especially those who are not so confident in their ETL practice).
  • A native vlookup equivalent may be a welcome addition.

DemandTools

  • Information overload for new users, due to the large number of things DemandTools can do (not inherently a bad thing, but still a challenge early-on).
  • In a similar fashion, it's hard to determine what DemandTools can and can't do out-of-the-box.
  • Hard to find documentation that gives a high-level overview of whether DemandTools can do what you want to attempt or not.

It is easy to use and doesn't require a security token, so I enjoy using it. It also doesn't require any download or installation, which is sometimes a blocker to gettingthings done if the company has limits. also, the dataloader.io is easy for other people to pick up, so others can have visibility into the data jobs that have occurred

It's a great product. The only thing that holds us back is it was frustrating working with their sales team. We also don't like that when Validity purchased DemandTools they immediately started charging us quite a bit while it had been free for non-profit users when CRMFusion owned it. They also don't let you buy it for just 1 or 2 seats, you have to pay, I believe, in batches of 100 seats.

Support can be slow so do not expect quick turn for urgent issues.
Help for specific queries not not there. Product tech support is offered. It would be great if query support, even if paid, was offered
The training webinars help with the basics but not much if you need advanced functionality.

Alternatives Considered

Dataloader.io

Jitterbit had more features and options, but was also more complicated to use. Salesforce's Data Loader is pretty basic, but there are no limits. We utilize Salesforce's Data Loader for most of our jobs involved a quick import of data, or large amounts of data. Dataloader.io is used for jobs under 10,000 records where there are multiple lookup fields that need to be updated.

DemandTools

It has been years since we looked at other tools, and while I know we reviewed four different solutions when we picked Demand Tools, it has been so long I don't remember who. We are so happy with the product, we have not gone to search for any other alternatives since we started using it over 5 years ago.

Return on Investment

Dataloader.io

  • Saves hours vs. manual data entry of getting records into Salesforce which saves a lot of money.
  • Makes our IT group more efficient by pulling them out of standard data upload tasks that can be done by less technical folks.
  • Allows the marketing department to more quickly communicate with their prospects by quickly getting them in to Salesforce, thus helping with sales.

DemandTools

  • A positive impact that I see from using DemandTools is that we have less of a need for man-power. Before DemandTools, I deduped records and changed records using native Salesforce products. I just deleted 100,000 records in 5 minutes with DemandTools and to duplicate that function in Salesforce would take much longer and would actually be a more troublesome task to complete.
  • A negative impact that I see is that there are several bundled products that come with the package that we do not need. When we first signed on with DemandTools several years ago, the price was much more reasonable. Since being bought by Validity, DemandTools is now bundled into a larger package with other products and the price more than doubled. We've expressed that we have no need for additional products at this time, but everything is within a bundle. I've utilized multiple packages where those add-on functions can be purchased for an additional price and that's what I think Validity should go back to for their customers.
  • All-in-all, I'm a big advocate of DemandTools and I think it is a vital package for our institution. I personally could not do my job as efficiently as I do without this product.
