Dialpad Talk

For a small business with 10 or fewer employees, I feel Dialpad would be an excellent choice and potentially game changing. This is especially so if this business has no phone system other than individual cell phones or a basic call routing system that only direct calls to these cell phones. Larger businesses that can make the investment in a more traditional telecom setup & hardware (that will have web features, email sync and even an app) may find Dialpad won't meet their needs for the long term. But a small to medium sized modern, mobile or fast moving business that is open to embracing 21st century technology and doing things a little differently will get a lot out of Dialpad - and can save money also by dropping their web conferencing vendor (Zoom, GTM, JoinMe, etc.).

Grasshopper

Seems like it is perfectly suited for ANY small to medium business. I can imagine that a business would outgrow the system eventually, but probably around 75-100 employees? Great system for offices that are not managed full time, companies with remote workers, budget conscience start ups, anyone with a need for a registered office line.

Pros

Dialpad Talk

  • Recordings- Dialpad Talk has a great feature that we can customize and allows us to analyze every interaction.
  • AI Transcription- Dialpad also identifies [which] words are being used during the calls, and lead us to a better logging of each call.
  • Dialbot- It is a bot that helps you when something is requiring your attention. As a supervisor, this a tool that I use every day.

Grasshopper

  • Extremely user-friendly interface - even non-tech-savvy users can manage their user setup and call handling on their own.
  • Excellent customer support.....on the few occasions that I've need help the Grasshopper team has been quick, helpful, professional, and friendly.
  • Impressive voice talent for those who don't want to (or shouldn't!) creates their own greetings and messages.

Cons

Dialpad Talk

  • The setup instructions were a little challenging.
  • It would be more convenient to have the voicemail greeting easier to access, rather than in the Account Settings....or have the account settings easier to access.
  • It would be nice to have a voicemail setting so a greeting with a timer to switch from that greeting back to the default greeting. Sometimes I have a greeting that states "I'll be in meetings offsite and not be able to return calls until the next day". I'd like that to expire at 5pm and my default greeting used.

  • There isn't much I can think of, although right now one of my team members isn't having her calls come through for some reason. We have to troubleshoot it and see if it isn't an issue with her phone first. But obviously its never good when things like that happen. Can't put the blame anywhere yet as we haven't yet looked at the issue.
  • Placing calls from within the Grasshopper app isn't always so solid. I've tried placing outgoing calls from the app and I've had issues where the person I called couldn't hear me or the call would just drop out of nowhere. It hasn't happened in a while but it did happen a few times when I first started using it. Admittedly that was over 4 years ago so it may not be an issue anymore.
  • This is a little out there but it would interesting if there were an option to SEND faxes as well. If I could take pictures of a document with my phone, or if there is an existing pdf file on my phone, the ability to send it would be great. It seems a little unnecessary because at that point you might think, well why not just email it? I agree but there are still some people and companies out there (strangely) that like to receive things via fax (i.e. the IRS still has some services that can only be taken care of if documents are mailed or faxed in). I'm sure eventually this will go the way of the dinosaur though.

The Dialpad app is very user friendly. It took very little time for even our most technically-challenged users to adopt it. Dialpad is also constantly upgrading their software so that functionality is gained. User adoption was really amazing. All it took was just making a few outbound calls and a few short videos to train our people.

  1. Dialpad Onboarding support was okay. I think this was because we used a 3rd party vendor. We had a lot of issues with provisioning the phones.
  2. The Dialpad sales rep forgot to mention that Dialpad is only compatible with Polycom desk phones so we bad to purchase new phones last minute.
  3. We were supposed to get 3 months free when we signed up with Dialpad as a courtesy but the charged us for the 3rd month. They have resolved this error but I think there was no designated point of contact on Dialpad's end to help things move more smoothly.

Support at Grasshopper is the reason I continue to integrate the calls with my nonprofit. A satisfying customer service experience paired with unparalleled service and cost is the reason we keep coming back. Phone service is simple yet an integral part of what most if not all small businesses need to succeed.

Alternatives Considered

Dialpad Talk

We previously used an NEC Voice over IP system. Dialpad Talk is much easier to program and on/off schedule for holidays and weather closings. Also, the previous phone system could only be used while staff is at their office. Dialpad can be used anywhere and programmed from anywhere.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper is more reliable in terms of the actual connection and quality of the call compared to Uber Conference & Google Hangouts. We choose Grasshopper over both of these platforms because it provided us a dedicated phone number we can use in our email signatures, allows us to screen phone calls, and provides extensions for different departments / members of the team so external callers can reach the person they were looking for without having to go through an operator

Return on Investment

Dialpad Talk

  • Dialpad is a relatively cheap and easy way to spin up a business phone number. For that, I think it had an overall positive effect on the company because it gave a decent alternative to going deep into landline business solutions (which are expensive and complicated).
  • Dialpad had a negative effect on my business because when I traveled or was OOO (which is sometimes frequently), I had to use my personal number to call anyone. It muddled the line between personal and work and created some disorganization in my process.

Grasshopper

  • Grasshopper has been positive overall because it is inexpensive and agile/easy to use
  • Our customers are happy that they can reach us easily, and our reps are happy to use their phones mobilely
  • Integration with G-suite and intercom is great - saves time and keeps us from having to waste time logging calls
