I think New Relic's APM is a great feature if you are running Ruby on Rails because ActiveRecord can abstract away the actual performance of your endpoint logic. It very easily allows you to identify endpoints that are taking too long, endpoints that have good throughput, and how the overall functionality is affecting the end-user experience. It also has many other monitoring features that can be great for companies that manage their own infrastructure.

Sumo Logic

SumoLogic is a fantastic log aggregator and analysis tool, a fine alternative to Splunk. Searching is powerful and mostly intuitive and results come fast. If you have application logs in clusters or Kubernetes pods that lose their logs every time they're restarted, Sumo is the solution for you

Pros

  • Monitor traffic rates and server usage on real time
  • Helps engineers to dive deep into an issue and guides them to the root cause
  • Provides high-level system health status of different components (ie. Server capacity, RPM, page load time, error rate..)
  • Near real time reporting
  • Links with deployment so easy to understand if an issue has occurred after a particular release

Sumo Logic

  • Sumo Logic allowed for our InfoSec team to ingest logs from our CDN directly, in real-time, instead of massive compressed archives that were sent every two-hours (the only alternative at the time). Sumo Logic had an app for these logs, that allowed us to easily get an immediate payoff from the data, with canned dashboard and saved searches.
  • Sumo Logic has a fairly extensive REST API when it comes to log sources, source configurations, dashboard data, searches, etc. Their wiki for the API is usually kept up to date.
  • Sumo Logic, during the period of time I had used their product, had added the ability to configure agents via configuration files. This allowed customers to configure their endpoints, and modify the endpoints, with configuration management tools like Chef / Puppet / Salt. Beforehand, the only option was to always make changes either via the web portal or REST API.
  • The solutions engineers were extremely helpful, and easily reachable when issues would occur.
  • Users at our company found it easy to get started, working on new dashboards, scheduled searches, and alerting. The alerting worked well with our third-party paging tool.

Cons

New Relic

  • It would be helpful if use cases for particularly a Windows installation, were provided to help determine which set of configuration files would be the one a group would want to control. I.e. potentially with a department trying to do DevOps, it's difficult to determine which team needs to have responsibility for what at times. The reason I mention this, is New Relic seems to in many ways be a tool that's useful for DevOps-related processes and staff.
  • On the main New Relic One site, sometimes a refresh option is available for new features. It would be helpful to see what the new features are in advance before trying this out. Particularly if doing a demo or a working season with another team.
  • I'm not aware of a page or specific site which describes/summarizes all of the different NR Products and their features.
  • Sometimes it's tricky to determine which product to use to accomplish a task.

  • I like the help center, but I think if it had more GUI tools, it could help new users.
  • Pulling out data is sometimes hard to read, (Maybe if I knew how to export data better, this would not be an issue for me).
  • I would like better know-how on how to create reports that will help our business.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

I would give this rating because I attended a free Sumo Logic training at a WeWork in Chicago. I found the training very useful, and I learned a lot of features that I was not aware of before I went to the training. I like the idea that SumoLogic provides free training seminars. I am certified in level1, and I plan on certifying to level2.

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

I was satisfied with the implementation, as at the time, it was the best way to implement the product with the available feature sets in Sumo Logic. User creation and management became more of an issue during continued use, instead of it being an issue related to deploying the product in our environment.

New Relic

We selected New Relic since it was very dynamic and versatile to use. It works well in all aspects of monitoring, and observability and would allow having a focus on collaboration with different repeatable processes. Also, New Relic has a good focus on working well with CLI, UI, and API types of work.

Sumo Logic

Sumo Logic works very well out of the gate. For a small business it has given us what we need. I worked at a larger company previously, and we produced so many logs we had to create a custom logging service to handle them all. Cost and availability are big issues when deciding between the different services, whether self maintained and hosted, or provided by another company.

Sumo Logic

  • I can't think of any negative side effects other than it being SO slow sometimes, but compared to Splunk everything is slow
  • It's SO much cheaper than Splunk that the time it takes to query information is well worth it
  • In the times that we've had Sumo go down or stop logging information, we've found that we'd be absolutely lost without Sumo
