UsabilityHub

UsabilityHub is great for testing out an item where you need responses quickly and/or you don't have sufficient traffic to test out an idea on a live site/environment.UsabilityHub is not suited for testing out items that require a specialized knowledge. For example, we had headlines to test out related to purchasing energy, but not every tester in UsabilityHub's pool had the level of knowledge needed to give a qualified opinion on this subject

UserTesting

UserTesting is well suited for companies who need to get customer verbatims for their company (either through written or verbal responses) who also need assistance in getting a wide panel of users. UserTesting is not only the industry standard for interviewing users but it's panel of users is so great that most likely, any kind of company will be able to screen UserTesting's userbase to find the right customers they need to interview.

UserTesting

  • Flexibility- you can do so much with the tool - it's really is up to you.
  • Support - between the commUnity, UserTesting University, and their support team, I feel very supported in my testing and never feel "lost."
  • Collaboration - it's easy to help my colleagues build out their tests.

Cons

UsabilityHub

  • Add additional demographic sorting options for the audience to better meet the needs of B2B users - for example include industry type, functional area, etc.
  • Bring back the navigation test type
  • Add additional test types

UserTesting

  • Wish there was a way to add different audiences after a test has launched
  • Wished there was a way to add folders or organizations to the tests
  • More controls as to what participants are chosen. For example, I'd like a wide range of participants between ages 18 and 65 and not get 3 18-year-olds in a row.

UserTesting has drastically changed the way we research. We are now conducting research at a scale and pace that would be impossible to replicate using our traditional recruitment methods. Additionally, the ease of sharing information and findings out of UserTesting has made our research more dynamic and engaging to stakeholders. We can't imagine a situation in which we step backwards now that we have demonstrated the expansion capability UserTesting provides to an in-house UX research practice.

  1. For a tool that is used for usability, I feel there can be some improvements!
  2. New features are often hard to find and functionalities that I do use everyday seem to have a learning curve, such as finding a video clip. I really want to be able to filter and be able to find these more easily.
  3. Search needs to be improved. I used to be able to search all text entered in the summary field and this is no longer available.
  4. Better reporting! Needs to format the Excel downloads and/or provide summary information in the tool.
  5. Needs to allow me to copy questions between study types--similar to Qualtrics, where I can copy anything from any study or block.

This is the best tool for doing moderated and unmoderated user tests. It's easy to use. It's intuitive. The support team is incredibly helpful. It's much more affordable than the competitors' platform and they are always adding new features. I can't say enough good things about UserTesting.

From a technical perspective, the implementation was extremely smooth. Most of the change management / implementation hurdles were clearing use of the tool through our various security, legal, and information privacy teams. Once these concerns were addressed (UserTesting.com was very helpful in providing all the needed documentation), the implementation process was very simple and we were able to get going right away.

Alternatives Considered

UsabilityHub

UsabilityHub provides very fast, short responses to specific questions about a static image of a website. This is useful for checking what is most prominent on a page, what they would click on, what they see/read within the first 5 seconds of landing etc. WhatUsersDo is a broader tool, that records the screen and audio as a user navigates the website. You can set tasks and ask questions, but it much more about the user journey experience and their opinion, rather than testing a particular feature. Feedback also takes a bit longer. Hotjar is a combination of both, its a screen recording which helps you to see where users click and move to, but there is no audio or text feedback, just heatmaps/click maps for watching user behaviour.

UserTesting

All the tools we had evaluated before purchasing had similar features but the one thing that set UserTesting apart from the rest was the size and reach of their user base. We needed to reach global audiences and at the time of our choice, only UserTesting was able to reach a large size of audiences in non-English speaking countries. That, specifically, was the reasoning behind our choice.

Return on Investment

UsabilityHub

  • Positive - It would give us responses significantly faster than testing out a concept on a live site
  • Positive - It allowed us to reach a wider audience for our tests (beyond our website traffic)
  • Positive - The quick turnaround time and quality of feedback encouraged other internal units to want to test more as they saw the return quickly.

UserTesting

  • Better user experience. We've used UserTesting to iterate through numerous designs before finding a solution that works well for users. This has saved us from countless failed product launches.
  • Faster time to market. We can build lightweight prototypes using Sketch and InVision, and test them without writing any code. That means we can move much faster overall.
