What is RStudio?

RStudio is a modular data science platform, combining open source and commercial products.

The vendor states their open source offerings, such as the RStudio IDE, Shiny, rmarkdown and the many packages in the tidyverse, are used by millions of data scientists around the world to enhance the production and consumption of knowledge by everyone, regardless of economic means.

Their commercial software products, including RStudio Workbench, RStudio Connect, and RStudio Package Manager, are available as a bundle in RStudio Team. These products aim to give organizations the confidence to adopt R, Python and other open-source data science software at scale. This enables data science teams using R and Python to deliver interactive reports and applications to decision makers, leverage large amounts of data, integrate with existing enterprise systems, platforms, and processes, and be compliant with security practices and standards.

The platform is complemented by online services, including RStudio Cloud and shinyapps.io, to make it easier to do, teach and learn data science, and share data science insights with others, over the web.

Together, RStudio’s open-source software and commercial software form a virtuous cycle: The adoption of open-source data science software at scale in organizations creates demand for RStudio’s commercial software; and the revenue from commercial software, in turn, enables deeper investment in the open-source software that benefits everyone.

RStudio Server Pro provides the workstation for a data scientist to create analytics, which then is curated to content/tools on RStudio Connect that helps the business audience understand a certain business problem better. To be able to reproduce the content, the analytical environment needs to be contained and controlled, so no unexpected dependency issue would disrupt the result. This is taken care of by the Package Manager. These 3 products have worked seamlessly in the daily tasks and provide a great number of intangible benefits not only for the data scientist team but also for the audience who consumes the content.

We use RStudio Connect and it offers one-click publishing. My least techy analyst can deploy stuff and get it out to decision-makers with minimal support and training for me. It does version control of packages in R and Python, which is pretty much essential, it can be used to deploy HTML/ RMarkdown/ Shiny, and we all absolutely love it.

RStudio Connect is such a great platform with lots of flexibility, although we are currently using a small chunk of them. It supports us to delivery insights to our internal team members as well as some external user outside organizations. RSPM is also great since it's a headache to handle private package before RSPM. Great support tool.

RStudio for R!

Not having to manage resources required to run apps for multi users and being able to integrate the development IDE with publication platform is a plus. To build a similar infrastructure internally would've cost more and likely not as well integrated as RStudio Teams.

Each of the 3 products - Server Pro, Connect and Package Manager, are a separate piece of the puzzle.

- Server Pro gives the developers access to a shared IDE, accessible via the browser
- Package Manager offers a simple way to publish and consume common packages and
- Connect allows you to publish your apps to end users - and you can even do this via Server Pro directly

RStudio Connect has enabled statisticians to deploy and share the analysis with the stake-holders. It has also enabled the stake-holders to tweak and play with the offered solutions allowing them a degree of flexibility.
RStudio pro gives a common platform for R-developers and brings homogeneity in the resource (R-versions, Server configurations) utilization and sharing.

Our use of commercial offerings from RStudio are in Shiny Server Pro and RStudio Connect. In both cases this is because we develop and deploy dashboards and applications which connect to databases that use row level security to ensure only proper access to the data. As such, we need solutions that authenticate users against our active directory and which issue Kerberos tickets at sign in to support delegated access to databases. This is simply not possible in the open source solutions. We have not seen a need to buy commercial solutions in the other products to support or enable collaboration.

RStudio Connect helps promote collaboration by making it easy to share your work with others. One-click publishing is very helpful, especially when you're publishing a Shiny app. In the past we had to think about solutions such as Docker or self-executables to share our results, now with Connect, we don't have to worry about the infrastructure details and we can just publish our findings and discuss the actual problem at hand.

We [have] used RStudio Connect for about 2 years and with over 60+ users, it bring transparen[cy] of company data to everybody including decision makers. It significantly increases efficiency and certainly avoids data silos.

It promotes collaboration, although certainly will cause some conflict among departments. But overall, it is the right direction to go.

I have used RStudio Server Pro, which allows you to use R via a web interface without installing anything to a particular machine. I find this very useful to demonstrate some R result to any colleague who does not have RStudio already installed on his/her laptop but would like to occasionally run an RScript. This web-based service also takes care of any issues that arise with different versions of the installed packages.

RStudio Connect provides a common publishing platform for all of our R and Python content (e.g., documents, apps, APIs). This type of content is incredibly valuable for communicating complex ideas that would otherwise languish in esotericity on a blackboard or in an un-digestable, un-sharable format on a data scientist's computer. Having a single location where data scientists can publish--and their stakeholders can view--such content drives more engagement and trust among data scientists and between them and their stakeholders.
