What is Rational BI?

Rational BI provides analytics, data science and business intelligence in an analytical platform that connects to databases, data files and cloud drives including AWS and Azure data sources, enabling users to explore and visualize data.

Users can build real-time notebook-style reports directly in a web browser with JavaScript and SQL with direct and live connections to data. Filter and query data with an SQL database embedded in the client, without network latencies. Schedule reports and notebooks for automatic delivery throughout the organization. Enterprise features like Single Sign-On and strict SLAs make Rational BI a fit for organizations of all sizes.

I have to manage and present report analyses coming from different projects. Rational BI allows for the creation of useful reports and dashboards and sets up automatically scheduled report delivery to all stakeholders. Managers and collaborators share easily a lot of information in a rational view with the possibility to customize the arrangements.

Rational BI allows managing data analysis coming from different projects in order to create useful reports and dashboards. I usually set up automatically scheduled reports. All the stakeholders can easily share a rational view with the possibility to filter between the interesting arguments. Sometimes different user profiles could be needed, optimize the view.

Alternatives Considered
Rational BI allows a deeper data analysis with respect to the other software I experimented with. The velocity to perform the analysis is similar to the other one. The predictive analysis could be very useful, but at the moment I do not use it in my activities. Dashboards are nice and easy to understand.

The outputs are one or more reports, that can be delivered automatically to the stakeholders or other communication media inside the organization. Nice dashboards help to describe and analyze data. Sometimes different user profiles could be needed, optimize the view.

I had no chance to use support, ma considering the good quality of the application, it would be supposed the overall support works fine. Maybe the use of different user profiles could be suggested to the support, to optimize the experience of every single user, without access to non-interesting data.

Rational BI is well suited for building stories from data originating from individual spreadsheets or cloud applications, data sources like Google Apps, Amazon S3 etc. Rational BI also helps to tailor and easily manage the analytics views and permissions for different audience in the organization while providing a single source of truth.

Rational BI offers richer data visualization components when compared to other BI products. It is visualization options are much more broader and can be complimented by on JavaScript graphic libraries available on the web. It also offers high performance and faster page load times when dealing with large data sets.

The overall support of Rational BI is good as they offer detailed product documentation and personalized support through various channels to enable customers on their platform. It's easy to report product issues to the support team and get their help to resolve functional or technical challenges with the usage of the product.

At the time we bought Rational BI we were a rapidly expanding company. With the increased company size we needed to be more data-driven and we also need to make more decisions based on data rather than gut feeling. One of the things we did to encourage colleagues to make decisions based on data was BI and actually showing graphs and numbers on a large screen.
Pros and Cons
  • Nice graphics that are quite easy understandable for viewers.
  • The level of customization is great. You really have the option to build the board with the graphical elements you desire.
  • Integrations with systems that we used. As a small company, we don't have many complex systems but generally more basic solutions. The Dropbox integration made it really easy for us to get started and it's working without problems.
  • Documentation for new users could be better. Sometimes it's hard for my users that are not that skilled in IS/IT to set up data connectors are understand the dynamics of data sources.
  • I have used several other BI solutions as well, and their GUI is okay, but surely there is also room for improvement here. Not all things are made entirely logically.
  • Understanding their price structure. Generally, their website looks nice, but it's not very informative when it comes to pricing, and support options. I really miss some kind of transparency and overview.
Likelihood to Recommend
Definitely well suited for small companies, but again many of their competitors are also well suited in this segment. We were in general happy with the solution provided, but I'm not blown away by their solution or support. If you want to get more data-driven visual boards with data displayed in nice graphics is in my opinion a good start, and here Rational BI delivers what it should.

  • Increased focus on data within the organisation.
  • Data-driven discussions and colleagues that relied on gut feeling are now being more challenged than before.
  • We didn't make an economic follow on the investment, but I'm certain that it was the right decision.
Alternatives Considered
Today there are many companies providing BI solutions, and generally, I think Microsoft Power BI is the easiest go-to solution as it is part of the Office365 software. However all software solutions have their limitations, advantages, and disadvantages, but sometimes you don't need the perfect solution. You just need a solution that delivers 80-90 percent of the full potential to reach your goal and in this scope, we were really happy with Rational BI.

As stated earlier it does what it is supposed to. It surely has room for improvements and it is possible to make customizations better and easier for builders or users to use. But when software delivers on the most important factors it surely is worth a recommendation and I'm sure others can benefit from it as well.

I haven't used the support myself, but my colleagues have been satisfied with the support. As I have understood from my colleagues the support is as you could expect. Still, the documentation could be better and that could avoid the need to contact their support, but overall we're still happy with the support as well.

Rational BI is used in various reporting manners. It allows you to segregate users and or groups, to provide them with reporting and data analytics for the specific use case. It also provides highly customized data visualization providing graphing, flow charts, etc. Great for data governance which can be imported into a company portal if so desired.

Likelihood to Recommend
The supply chain right now is a very good area where Rational BI would prove very advantageous. Also, you can be very specific with a particular product to provide insight on how well it's doing or where it may need improvement. Great chart graphing as well.

Alternatives Considered
Rational BI is one of the leading business intelligence software products. Ease of use is imperative when bringing on a new software product, you want your folks to have a very low learning curve. The rationale is pretty easy right out of the box, I like the fact that customization can be done from various aspects and are eye appealing.
