Overall Satisfaction with ScienceLogic SL1

ScienceLogic products are used across the whole organization that I belong to. It is a core component of one of our solutions to deliver managed services for our customers. It is also used internally to monitor and manage our own infrastructure.
  • Network Discovery: It is able to discover devices based on a plethora of mechanisms (SNMP, API, Netconf, etc.) with little effort.
  • Event processing: It includes event policies for a massive number of technology-specific events with a granular severity classification schema.
  • Dynamic modeling: It is highly accurate in determining which collections (performance, faults, etc.) are aligned to each network node or component based on the discovered device class.
  • Reporting: The reporting engine embedded in ScienceLogic is not really robust and does not provide a development framework that provides the level of sophistication demanded by certain technologies.
  • Scalability: ScienceLogic DB does not scale very well for large networks or, at least, the sizing criteria are not clearly defined.
  • Integration with ITSM systems.
  • Scalability, positive
  • Documentation, positive
  • Agility, negative
Yes, our level of visibility improved with ScienceLogic by delivering in-depth visibility with a high affinity by the technology specifics.
Mainly for business growth based on our current solutions. SL1 and IS4 are in the core of our services.
SL1 uses IS4 to mediate between the event management engine of our solution and our ITSM platform.
  • Highly customized integration with our ITSM platform
  • Integration with 3rd party products
  • Offering customer-facing services through ITSM solutions bonding
ScienceLogic provides technology-aware capabilities that leverage, out-of-the-box, most of the functionalities that we require to support our customers. It also provides APIs and in general a good development framework that allows deploying enhancements in a very easy and robust way.
ScienceLogic delivers stable capabilities in general. However, it is not so diligent fixing bugs and understanding how to prioritise issues.

ScienceLogic SL1 Implementation

Not really, I am highly satisfied with the deployment though there are some areas of improvement to look after.
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - The automated deployment capabilities should be improved for a smoother and more agile roll-out. In general, the implementation is easy but there are some areas that can definitely be improved, specially if you are planning to roll-out or update the product at scale, yada, yada, yada...
  • HSTS Configuration
  • Collectors deployment
  • DB HA configuration

ScienceLogic SL1 Reliability

The product is extremely stable, that's it :-)
It performs reasonably fine until you cross certain thresholds. Beyond 5-6K thousands of devices, adding additional workload to the system downgrades the performance considerably.

Configuring ScienceLogic SL1

It is just right for this type of product.
Not really, I do it by the book.
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface - Fairly easy.
Yes - we have added extensive custom code - To support additional devices types or to enhance the out-of-the-box support with enriched PowerPacks.
We have added a bunch of customized reports, but the reporting engine is quite fragile, I'm afraid.
