ScienceLogic - Enterprise Considerations

Yes - EMAN, a homegrown, 20 year availability monitoring, performance monitoring, CMDB, Change Management, Alerting, and many other unrelated enterprise functions.

The scale and complexity of EMAN includes access control, self-service mailing list management, cell phone ordering, home internet service registration and funding, pager service management, paging + email notification capability, DNS, DHCP, Telephony Number Management and probably another dozen things that I can't remember.

That scale and complexity could not be leveraged into the new world order of rapidly instantiated but short-lived containers and monitoring across a host of new world technologies and APIs with an ossifying skillset and minimal support / development team.

ScienceLogic allowed the vast majority of those resources supporting EMAN to move to migrate their skillset to ScienceLogic and expand our monitoring coverage with a minimum drop in functionality during the transition.

The relationship with ScienceLogic gives Cisco IT a higher leverage point for our development skills than we had with the EMAN platform.

Yes - SMARTs was a dated and limited solution. The integrated and extensible capability of ScienceLogic was the driving reason behind SL1 adoption. It was also part of a new ECO System of fewer tools and more integration developed by the architecture organization.

Yes - It replaced Pulse, which had numerous problems and ultimately never delivered on the promises the company gave to us. It was slow and clunky so we decided to part ways with that company in search of a better solution which we found with ScienceLogic.

Yes - Well in part. For obvious reasons we still use several native, built-in, additional monitoring tools, a) because SL1 comes short e.g. Cisco units/services or b) because of difficulties integrating. SL1 remains the preferred choice for consolidating monitoring of customer production.

Yes - BMC TrueSight and Entuity were both replaced by SL1. This has reduced the vendor list and simplified vendor management slightly. Having one tool allowed us, in this particular case, to re-allocate employees to other billable (compared to running back-office systems) tasks. Overall, support costs have dropped as well. One thing to mention: SL is smaller than the big players in the AIOps market. This allows them for quicker updates and very good support.

Yes - Nimsoft and Zenoss. We wanted to look for a holistic product we could develop as a one-stop-shop and make SPOGs for customers in their environment instead of them managing five or six different links in a "Frankensteined" health portal. ScienceLogic SL1 still has a ways to go but it's getting there.

Yes - Old monitoring tool based on old technology. SL1 monitoring offers new capabilities and could cover cloud or hybrid solution by deploying SL1 appliances on premises or on cloud, or by using cloud API to monitor virtual servers. Another point is the agentless monitoring, other old solutions need to deploy agent on target devices.
