What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

BMC Remedy was replace by SL. Our license have come to and end on BMC Remedy, and we wanted to standardize our software across all customers that we support. Apart from the standardisation of the software, this would also allow us to see anomalies and trends accross all of our customers. This would mean that we can be more proactive and our reaction times to resoltion would be faster.

It replaced Pulse, which had numerous problems and ultimately never delivered on the promises the company gave to us. It was slow and clunky so we decided to part ways with that company in search of a better solution which we found with ScienceLogic.

PCA from Cisco. The alarm from the previous tool was really poor, and we were having several incidents without a proper alarm system.
Nowadays, our product is propertly monitored, so customer are more happy.

ScienceLogic is a power tool, as a point to improve is to reduce the number of resources needed.

We are replacing existing IBM Tivoli Monitoring environments (from both multi-tenant environments and customer-owned) with a ScienceLogic monitoring solution. Some small features, such as capacity/resource management capabilities, are also being migrated to ScienceLogic, however, for quick and short time data and graphs. Event management quick capabilities are being tested as well.

EMAN, a homegrown, 20 year availability monitoring, performance monitoring, CMDB, Change Management, Alerting, and many other unrelated enterprise functions. The scale and complexity of EMAN includes access control, self-service mailing list management, cell phone ordering, home internet service registration and funding, pager service management, paging + email notification capability, DNS, DHCP, Telephony Number Management and probably another dozen things that I can't remember. That scale and complexity could not be leveraged into the new world order of rapidly instantiated but short-lived containers and monitoring across a host of new world technologies and APIs with an ossifying skillset and minimal support / development team. ScienceLogic allowed the vast majority of those resources supporting EMAN to move to migrate their skillset to ScienceLogic and expand our monitoring coverage with a minimum drop in functionality during the transition. The relationship with ScienceLogic gives us a higher leverage point for our development skills than we had with the EMAN platform.

Zenoss. We have a service contract that is expiring with Zenoss and that the team who maintains the product is also under dissolution. SL1 was used by another team for a smaller scale for almost 5 years hence this was chosen to be the tool. The other reason is because Cisco uses it also.

Not completely, but we have been using quite a lot of products for infra monitoring--tools like CA UIM, SolarWinds, CA Spectrum, etc. have been on our list for many years. Now, we have added and begun using ScienceLogic SL1 and have had mixed reviews from customers.
