Overall Satisfaction with ScienceLogic SL1

We are deploying the SL1 for our customers. This product is typically used by organizations driven by the DevOps model. IT allows them to harness the elements of AI into the infrastructure monitoring and IT Service Management. Surprsiningly, it also has a simple ticketing system built-in. However, in most cases, the customers decide to integrate with their existing ticketing systems. While I have seen IT using it, the business hardly ever gets more than a dashboard to see which services are up.
  • Quick Infrastructure discovery.
  • Correlation of the discovered events to the services they affect.
  • Automated baselining.
  • Short deployment time.
  • Low price when compared to the competitors.
  • Integration with other systems (ticketing, change, etc.).
  • Compliance with the industry standards (ITIL).
  • Ticketing system could be improved.
  • User interface can be confusing to the new users.
  • Low entry price and quick deployment time add up to a good ROI.
  • Additional training may add costs.
  • Quick delivery allows the teams to focus on the operations rather than a long deployment project.
Yes - BMC TrueSight and Entuity were both replaced by SL1. This has reduced the vendor list and simplified vendor management slightly. Having one tool allowed us, in this particular case, to re-allocate employees to other billable (compared to running back-office systems) tasks. Overall, support costs have dropped as well. One thing to mention: SL is smaller than the big players in the AIOps market. This allows them for quicker updates and very good support.
In the case I have described, it was not exactly the change invisibility. It was a unification. Instead of having two separate products, the customer ended up with one holistic view of the entire infra (network, server, and application levels). Because literally anyone with an AD account was able to log into the system, the administration was simple and straight forward.
Customer in question, an SP in the UK, supports multiple customers across the EU. SL1 is being used as a centralized platform for running managed services. SL1 Monitors the existing and new customer environments, both on-prem and in the cloud, updates the CMDB, and integrates with incident management.
  1. SL1 automates the discovery of the new customer infrastructure on-prem, in the cloud, etc. This allows for quicker onboarding. Having said that. it is still a subject of the security review in many DCs and this (although not a technical or capability issue) tends to impact the deployment times there.
  2. CMDB in ServiceNow is updated automatically. This allows security, change, and asset management to work on the same data!
  3. Incidents are raised in the service desk as SL1 automates the daily checks and performance management.
  • Centralized reporting is a great addition to the operations.
  • Having one discovery tool simplifies the administration.
BMC TrueSight Operation Management, Infrastructure Management, Discovery, and CMDB can be all replaced by SL1. This is pretty impressive. However, the BMC product, while more complicated to install and manage, has some advantages. There are capability management and application visibility that can give you a very detailed view of what is happening in your applications. Entuity can be replaced as well. But Entuity is excellent when it comes to discovering the netowrk connections. Compared to it, SL1 excels when it comes to monitoring of the non-network infrastructure and event management. And there is the price point.
An answer as to whether this is the right system for you greatly depends on several factors:
1) Your budget
2) Governance in your organization
3) Whether you are willing to invest in education

If your budget is below the leader's quadrat, but you are looking for a versatile infra management tool with AI built-in and have a limited time to deploy, my suggestion would be to consider SL1. Do bear in mind that investing in the user and admin training is essential.
