Overall Satisfaction with Twilio
We used twilio for sending SMS and WhatsApp messages through API. We have used Twilio to unify our message channels into a single API, this really help to streamline development. We use messaging in some of our products to send OTPs, notifications and to create simple chatbot experiences to sell our products as add on services in them.
Pros
- Having a single api to handle all business messaging
- Being able to buy virtual numbers in the platform and helping us avoid having multiple carrier contracts for numbers
- Seamless integration with WhatsApp. WhatsApp can be a bit of a pain to work with directly and Twilio makes it easier
Cons
- The dashboard has a very steep learning curve. It feels a bit outdated
- Billing per WhatsApp message instead of templates like Meta does can inflate bills and makes you think of switching to meta directly
- Making webhooks is a bit hard to find and the instructions don't feel clear enough
- A positive one is developer experience because of having a single service for all messaging channels
- Another positive one has been not dealing with WhatsApp and Meta. Their developer experience eats very confusing, and Leo has done a better job at it.
- A negative aspect is the WhatsApp pricing. With WhatsApp directly you pay for the conversation based on the type but with Twilio we are paying the conversation plus a cost per message.
We currently use two channels (WhatsApp and SMS) with Twilio for all our messaging needs. So far those have covered every use case we’ve encountered and we haven’t felt limited by channel availability. Twilio also offers voice, email, chat, and others so in the event of our requirements expanding we feel confident we can adopt additional channels without switching providers.
We’ve relied on Twilio’s scalability everytime we needed a ramp up in SMS and WhatsApp traffic without any hiccups or manual intervention. If needing new numbers for international markets, it was just a few clicks. In general I think that Twilio makes growing our operation feel effortless and not worrying about hitting volume limits or outgrowing our tools.
