Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

Google Ads

AdWords works very well as a lower funnel channel, this means that you are able to target users who are already expressing interest or intent to buy or sign up for a specific product, it works very well as a B2C product, where you have a product to sell, or you want to push a certain product. I think AdWords is less suited when it comes to a branding piece if you are trying to give your business more exposure in the public eye. This could work as support to other channels, such as out of the home, or paid social.

Pros

  • Their backlink database is still one of the most up to date we've seen when compared to similar tools.
  • The user interface is very intuitive and easy to learn.
  • They provide you with a lot of great information and the ability to set a date range can really help you narrow things down.

  • It provides a wealth of data essential to good PPC management. This includes impression share data, quality score, clicks, impressions, conversion tracking and so on.
  • It is fairly familiar to anybody who has worked in the PPC industry understands its functions and metrics are therefore as close as you can get to a universal language.
  • Our organisation is often approached to take part in betas for new functions such as new demographic targeting tools etc., which we are able to leverage to great effect.

Cons

  • Ahrefs Site Explorer provides an overview of domain health and the issues that can be fixed, and sometimes the suggested "critical issues" can be an astronomical number and not accurate.
  • For certain features on Ahrefs Site Explorer, there can a more elaborate description/guide on how to utilize the feature.

  • One scope of functionality that I find missing is that what if a user is not as advanced to select the best keywords for their business. Google has facility to do topic targeting on content networks, and that facility should be extended to PPC. For example if the clients want to sell shirts they can select apparel as a category and have a chance to appear on relevant searches.
  • Google AdWords also has a long way to go as far as mapping online to store purchases, since a lot of time the final decision is made online but the purchase happens in the store. Google is putting steps in place to get closer to this but there are several enhancements that are possible.

Their index is too vast to ignore when looking at a complete backlink profile. We find links in Ahrefs that do not appear in any other link detection tool. For this reason, it's a must for our agency to use for the foreseeable future. Plus, it's very affordable considering the data you get

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Alternatives Considered

I like these other softwares too. If you work in an agency you will likely have uses for many different platforms. I do like the way that ahrefs indexes and tracks links more than anything else I have used though. I think it is very effective with competitive research as well

  • Ahrefs' impact on revenue is difficult to measure because it is one tool in a larger suite. Alone, it does not drive leads but supports the efforts of a team to grow traffic.

  • The positive impact comes from the fact, that paid search is usually the cheapest paid advertising channel
  • The negative impact is due to the dependency on Google when it comes to CPCs, as there are many factors influencing the actual CPC, which lately has increased significantly on all types of keywords. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing to do on the advertiser's side.
