This is a very comprehensive tool in terms of ability and information it provides. While it won't give you every link a site has, it will give you most of them and will provide you with the most up to date link information for any site compared to all of the other link crawl providers.

AdWords works very well as a lower funnel channel, this means that you are able to target users who are already expressing interest or intent to buy or sign up for a specific product, it works very well as a B2C product, where you have a product to sell, or you want to push a certain product. I think AdWords is less suited when it comes to a branding piece if you are trying to give your business more exposure in the public eye. This could work as support to other channels, such as out of the home, or paid social.

Pros

  • Crawl link depth is probably the best feature of Ahrefs. Being able to crawl more sites means that users have access to more data than the nearest SEO link competitor. Crawl depth is important for good SEO and Ahrefs checks that box off with a bold mark!
  • Ahrefs has many tools you can use. Site explorer, keyword explorer, content explorer, rank tracker, site audit checker tools and more just to name a few. While I personally do not use most of the tools available, its good to know that they are available to use when needed. The depth of tools makes this the swiss army knife for SEO professionals.
  • Ahrefs allows you to keep track of your site links, rankings, and keywords with a 15-minute delayed-crawl rate. This means you can keep track of changes and monitor sites closer to real-time than you would with other tools. In the SEO world, that is as close to perfection as it gets. I have tried several other SEO management tools and Ahrefs beats them at this.

  • Google will go out of its way to provide help for you on the phone, via email, or online chat.
  • There are a lot of options for how and where you advertise.
  • The tools are very robust, the data is immense.

Cons

  • It's been great, sometimes you have to watch the tutorial to learn how to use the tools though as it gets a little complicated.
  • Nothing else I can think of

  • Geo-modifiers- while certainly beneficial to use for local search, not a clear explanation of the best way of targeting (by radius, town, zip?)
  • Adwords Certification- shouldn't indicate a user's expertise since some areas included on test may not be essential to run a successful campaign for your space
  • The ambiguity of Quality Score

Ahrefs recently became more expensive. While they offer a large web index of backlinks, some of the modules of analysis available in similar tools make them a better value in many respects. Ahrefs continues to update their interface, but the accuracy of link counts and new/lost data modules calls into question the validity of the provided information.

Google's still ahead of the game. Their Dynamic Search capabilities and Remarketing and Display capabilities are unmatched for a self-serve platform. They have the newest and latest ad formats. The vast majority of eyeballs remain on Google and that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon

Usability

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Very quick UI. Put together in a very intuitive and simple manor, while allowing users to go into the depths of functionality if they want

Alternatives Considered

There are some similarities, but ultimately, they're different tools. I really like both, but I prefer Ahrefs. Its layout and organization of data works for my workflow the best

Return on Investment

  • ROI is definitely positive, as the price is relatively low for such a useful tool. It's hard to quantify the positive impact Ahrefs had on our projects, but it was definitely very helpful (in finding reasons for sudden drops in rankings and discovering new strategies by just looking at competitors using Ahrefs).

  • We saw an increase in leads and improvement in the quality of leads, unfortunately we cannot share lead generation data but the increases are quite significant.
