AppsFlyer

To be relatively honest, AppsFlyer is a great service and an excellent platform. It's robust, and we still haven't gone insanely deep into some of its functionality. If it wasn't for using Appsee as our UI/UX and mobile app analytics platform, we would have gone with a free option, like Branch.io, but unfortunately, they didn't integrate well with Appsee. So out of the companies that did, AppsFlyer was the best and cheapest, as it's pay by install is a small cent amount. If you for some reason can't use a free platform like Branch or Firebase, then AppsFlyer is probably your best choice for just attribution.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel excels when the data going into it is properly tagged and with the right attributes. This means that companies need to be very deliberate with how they plan their development. Metrics need to be baked into the dev flow so that each page is properly instrumented. Furthermore, events need to be properly organized as it's easy to lose track of events and when they came online. If you don't put in the work beforehand, Mixpanel just won't be as useful.

Pros

AppsFlyer

  • AppsFlyer dashboard reflects metrics in real time. If you click on a link on your mobile device and then install/engage, then, the result shows up in the AppsFlyer dashboard within the minute. This fast metric is really useful for testing.
  • AppsFlyer has a product called data vault that gives you both organic and non-organic traffic attribution details - for every single call made. It is great for doing more analysis.
  • AppsFlyer customer service is phenomenal - I have phone access to at least two people in Appsflyer - one an account manager, and another, an engineer.
  • AppsFlyer has great integration with other mobile networks (SSPs). I was evaluating using DoubleClick for Mobile vs AppsFlyer. At the time of evaluation, AppsFlyer was miles ahead and integrated with every ad network that we were interested in. Moreover, Facebook has the most audience that we are interested in - AppsFlyer was better suited for that than Doubleclick.

Mixpanel

  • Easily set up simple behavior funnels. I.e. Customers who did A, then did B, then did C, with conversion rates at each step.
  • Manage profiles of customers for targeted marketing. E.g. Send a push notification to all of my customers who consumed a particular product 3 months ago. Or automatically send a message to every user 2 weeks after their first login.
  • CUSTOMER SERVICE!! They have excellent reps who are very knowledgable and quick to jump into a sticky analytics question. They are honest when Mixpanel is not the right tool for the a particular job, but are pretty good and coming up with solutions that fit within your existing framework.

Cons

AppsFlyer

  • The AppsFlyer UI for generating individual campaign trackers is terrible. I gave them feedback and they tell me that they are working on fixing it soon (in 6 months?).
  • AppsFlyer documentation for server to server integration for both install and engagement campaigns is (still!) very confusing.

Mixpanel

  • Funnel analysis, Segmentation, Reporting - these are areas where Mixpanel excels above other analytics tools.

Mixpanel is a simple JS script installation. For adding events to track, its simply a matter of adding the code where you want it. Their API and documentation are easy to understand and use.

Alternatives Considered

AppsFlyer

The biggest problem with AppsFlyer is that there's no free tier. It's solely pay per install, which is nice for small teams and startups, but Branch.io is free up to a couple thousand to tens of thousands of MAU's!Branch also has features and benefits that AppsFlyer just doesn't, such as text to app install, automatic dynamic links, custom short links, and so much more.If you're building from scratch, go with Branch and use a data analytics platform that integrates well with them such as a Mixpanel (which also does attribution but is not as robust as Branch, so use the integration).

Mixpanel

Mixpanel has pretty powerful mobile users' behavior analytics when comparing to its competitors on a market. Also, Mixpanel offers a lot of capabilities for free, it has an up-to-date, user friendly interface, quick and very professional customer support, reports that you can create within seconds and they advertise themselves very well

Return on Investment

AppsFlyer

  • We have spent more than $50 million on mobile campaigns, all tracked through AppsFlyer. If we assume measurement adds at least 10% value, then, we can quantify ROI at at-least $5 million.
  • We have 59 apps on AppsFlyer.
  • We have integrated with 101 ad networks through AppsFlyer (i.e. created trackers to run ads on these networks).

Mixpanel

  • Mixpanel has not really yielded a positive ROI in our organization. Each event stored is very expensive.
  • Additionally, Mixpanel requires significant time investment to learn their proprietary systems (e.g. JQL).
  • Finally, poor upstream Mixpanel implementations create alot of catch up.
