Lifesize Video Conferencing

The Lifesize Cloud Platform, combined with the connected Icon Room Systems, provides any business with a reliable, stable, and unrivaled quality video communications solution. I would have no hesitation in recommending this solution to any business, large or small—it just works every time! With the added ability to simply book a meeting directly from Outlook or the browser, invite your room system and be faced with a simple yes or no on the screen of the room system, this is by far the simplest video conferencing solution that I have ever used.

TeamViewer

Teamviewer is best suited for any team who can afford their commercial licensing costs and have a good enough bandwidth to support its connection for a seamless work experience. It could be a bit pocket heavy for small team sizes where budget is stringent and if budget is a problem, then one should look at other cheaper options

Pros

Lifesize Video Conferencing

  • Encrypted Communications: Competing against other newspapers and stations is tough. Lifesize Video Conferencing helps us keep our content original and encrypted.
  • Multiple Screen Sharing: Before, our preferred method of contact was a text message or a FaceTime call. This program allows us to share the same video chat with multiple sources. We've streamed interviews across 4 different games and given live in-game updates - that's something our competitors can never touch us with.
  • Sharable Content: Our meetings and interviews can be recorded and shared amongst our other team members or with the public through social media.

TeamViewer

  • Sharing a screen via TeamViewer is generally very responsive, even if the internet connection (on either the client or host side) isn't great. TeamViewer seems to use an adaptive compression algorithm, that will sacrifice some screen clarity for a more responsive and pleasurable experience.
  • TeamViewer includes a built-in file sharing mechanism that allows for the easy and secure transfer of files from host to client (or vice versa).
  • During the initial install of TeamViewer, you can set it up to "run-only." As in, it will not actually install itself on the computer but will allow for a one-time use remote session. This is ideal for a quick tech support session where the client doesn't want to, or can't, fully install TeamViewer.
  • TeamViewer is a very secure platform, providing multiple layers of security. First, the only way to connect to a client is by knowing the client's machine id - a 9 or 10 digit randomly generated number created on install. In addition, for one-time connection, a randomly generated pin is created on each use. This pin can be set as a simple 4 digit pin, up to a 10 digit strong password including uppercase, lowercase, number and non-alphanumeric characters. In addition, TeamViewer is initially set NOT to open upon login - meaning the computer is not accessible until TeamViewer is manually opened on the client computer.
  • TeamViewer can be used as both an on-demand screen sharing platform - wherein a client only opens TeamViewer when someone needs to get on remotely, and promptly closes it afterward - as well as an always-on screen sharing system. TeamViewer can be set to open automatically at login, and run in the background. A "personal password" can then be created for unattended access - this password can be as strong or as weak as you choose. One the password is set, you can connect to your computer remotely via TeamViewer at any time by knowing the machine ID and the personal password.
  • Initial setup of TeamViewer is a fairly simple procedure, especially useful when talking a client on how to install it over the phone.
  • While screen sharing is TeamViewer's bread and butter, it also includes a plethora of other features including file sharing as well as both video and audio sharing (great for remote tech support).
  • With a TeamViewer account, multiple computers can be logged in via the account and easily accessible within an instance of TeamViewer.
  • TeamViewer is truly cross-platform, with version for Mac, Windows and Linux, as well as for mobile OSs such as iOS and Android.
  • A personal license is free.

Cons

Lifesize Video Conferencing

  • I dislike that they are no longer making the Team/Room 220's. I am not a fan of the Icon editions that are replacing the Team/Room 220's for my classrooms and conference rooms. I do not like, when I remote into the codecs, that the layout is very limited compared to the Team/Room 220's. I can no longer see if someone is in the room or able to access the remote control or adjust the cameras. Because we are not using the "Cloud" with our codecs, users are no longer able to access a directory. The remote control looks almost like the Apple TV remote, which has very few buttons with no labels on it. My users, who are not very tech savvy, would rather not use the equipment unless some else sets it up for them.
  • Software for computers could be more robust. One thing I would like to see is a way to click on one of the video streams to just see it large and be able to toggle which screen I want to see myself, instead of the software deciding which one should be the focus point based on who is talking.

TeamViewer

  • - A difficulty that we have experienced in the company and that has been detected with each stumble that has been had, is the fact that the different versions are not compatible with each other, so if some user accidentally updates his version (very normal fact ), compatibility problems are generated that have caused our support department to have to communicate with each user who is under that condition to ask him to delete the new version, and then reinstall the correct version.
  • Although it really does not have to be a limitation, the software does not have the functionality to work through proxy servers, which could become a limiting factor of some relevance for those who want to take care of "their presence" when working in an open network.

Other than the HIPAA compliance, we have no compelling reason to retain LifeSize when we can already pay for similar services included with our UCaaS service. Our UCaaS vendor, Fuze, includes video conferencing with the VoIP services via single, integrated client software package. Additional limitations include minimal implementation assistance, training service, training materials and assistance driving internal adoption. Issues with slow speed for desktop sharing and audio quality make the technical aspects of Lifesize inferior to competitors.

As long as I continue to provide remote support for my clients, it's a no brainier. For what I pay out, I probably make it back tenfold in the ability to provide remote support from wherever and whenever. Not to mention the saved gas money for a fix that only takes 5 minutes but it takes you 20 minutes to get there. As my business continues to grow, and I support more and more clients, my need for TeamViewer will only grow.

We rolled out Lifesize with minimal instructions and high adoption. The touchpad on the Phone 2 is solid from a usability perspective. The touchpad on the Phone 2 allows us to remove remotes. The whole Icon experience is so much better than the color multi-function buttons on the room units (which were confusing to people). Thankfully the room units also work well with the Phone 2.

TeamViewer is a system that is very easy to understand and grasp the concept of which is a very nice thing because users that don't have much technology and computer background can use the system easily. While being easy to understand for the average user, it doesn't lose the functionality and features that IT people love to see with software that makes it easier for us to do our jobs.

Lifesize is an amazing platform for VC. However, it is a costly solution for any scaling startup. However, implementation and user acceptability was fairly easy and worth the additional spend. Quality has always been on point and support has always taken care of us. Our account manager also ensured a seamless transition process for Google Hangouts. Will go with this solution again at any other organization.

Most of the front-line call takers are only as knowledgeable enough to tell you to reboot or reset. If your issue is more complicated than that, it will need to be escalated. On the other hand - most of our problems have been on our network side. The techs are ALWAYS super nice and try to be as helpful as possible. They do care about fixing the problem.

I still feel there's a lot that can be done, more especially when it comes to customer requests, as I had at some stage I had requested a feature which was available in an earlier version, but I couldn't get it, although it was important for us. With the current edition, when an action you need to perform on a user's computer, requires elevation, you lose total control on the user's PC, and have to rely on the user's competent to take the rest of the steps you have to perform, as you can only see, and not control the remote PC.

Lifesize Video Conferencing

Lifesize provides a great high-quality professional video conferencing solutions that, with accompanying software like Lifesize Cloud or Zoom, can connect to a multitude of different devices anywhere in the world. While Polycom certainly has more brand recognition in the industry for its communication platforms, I think Lifesize is a comparable product that works just as well as Polycom.

TeamViewer was the best option for remote control and with the ability for participants to point on the screen during presentations. It was the fastest/smoothest experience for remote control, and allowed logging into the computer before logging in after a reboot. It was also the only one with a concurrent user licensing model, which was a huge selling point.

It's pretty impressive the number of people the system can support both in total and per conference. The system handles large numbers of connections pretty well, although there's little control over how participants are displayed on screen. One of its greatest strengths is adding large number of both video and audio connections simultaneously.

  • We have five locations across Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, with key stakeholders and cross-location teams that work together every regardless of physical location. This resource is critical in keeping our teams connected.
  • Has improved collaboration and communication by having as close to face to face meetings as possible with remote team members. Conference rooms were often times double booked because of LifeSize, which as a determining factor in us moving to a cloud subscription.
