SolarWinds Loggly

It is well suited to very large volumes of logs where the immediate past is the area of interest, e.g. in situations where the issues are in the recent past. Loggly makes it very easy to search for particular terms of interest, within a specific time frame across the entire estate of devices or, indeed, within a subset, or on a specific device of interest. There does seem to be a short delay in the logs though, even with the "live tail" feature, Loggly might be less suited to "emerging" situations where the issues are occurring in real time.

New Relic

I appreciate that New Relic is easily integrated into applications for APM and infrastructure for monitoring.Our applications are Ruby on Rails apps and getting them reporting into New Relic is easy to implement. In most cases, it just requires adding the "newrelic" gem and updating the "newrelic.yml" configuration file. Just this simple addition to a project gives us an entrypoint to analyzing performance.We use the New Relic Infrastructure agent by default on all of our cloud based servers. We have this set up with Chef so we don't even think about it; we just spin servers up and go. Minutes later they're reporting into New Relic. We use Terraform to automatically create monitors so we can keep track of the essentials like core processes, disk, CPU, and memory.

Pros

SolarWinds Loggly

  • Putting our logs in one place and making them searchable. We use AWS, and CloudWatch has always been a little frustrating in this regard (though it has gotten better recently).
  • Deriving metrics from our logs. I think log-based metrics is such a good idea because your logs are the ultimate source for truth in regards to what the hell is going on inside your app. I have really loved the simplicity with which I can just count certain statements and call that a metric because just through the normal course of development certain log statements just naturally become a straightforward recording of an event having occurred.
  • Alerts. I actually have a few complaints about email alerts, but just the way I was able to set them up so easily has been huge. Since we started using Loggly, there have been at least 3 bugs that Loggly exposed that were frankly very bad. And withoutt Loggly or without a user reporting them, we would have never known they were happening! This is stuff I tried to set up in CloudWatch in various ways, but because of my own ignorance or perhaps the complexity/limitations of CloudWatch (or the complexity of my stack?), I wasn't getting the information that I needed until I was able to just tell Loggly to send me an email whenever the word "error" showed up.

  • Once the logging limit is exceeded, there are no logs period. Unexpectedly noisy logs often correlate with services misbehaving and potentially leading to disruption. An outage is an awful time to lose visibility into the entire system of apps. Some ways to bridge this gap would be appreciated.
  • Filtering by tags is not intuitive in the web interface. You may believe that you are performing the same search and filter as last time since the tags entered are the same, however, this is often not the case. The reliable way to know that you have the same filter is to bookmark the URL. This lack of ease in usability results in devs using Loggly less than they could and implementing logs less effectively during development time (since they don't consider themselves likely to view them anyway).
  • Would like to see a way to onboard our less experienced devs to using Loggly effectively.

  • Cloud-centric / OS-centric. There is no/limited ability to query metrics with an agent installed.
  • Insights-based queries (dashboards and alerts) are limited to 1000 (soon to be 2000) records and that doesn't work for enterprise scale.
  • NRQL is awesome -- except when it isn't. The replacement QL is more robust but is significantly more complex to learn.
  • No agent management tools in the platform. And, yes, you will want agent management tools after the first dozen or so deployments.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

Loggly's easy setup, very good customer support, and intuitive interface make Loggly very easy to use. User access management is also very easy as we can tailor the experience for each of our developers to access the information they need without having to wade through other information. While there was a slight learning curve in how to view the logs the way some specifically wanted, everything was possible and quite easy to do.

New Relic interface can be tricky to setup sometimes, especially on dashboards, but the overall usability is great. We also find particularly interesting the chart creation tools. There are no major issues that prevented us using any of their services.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

We were using Zabbix. While it is an open-source solution that you can install for free the following things were limitations of the solution. 1) The scale and uptime of the solution are now your own problem. Since we were hosting at AWS this meant we still had a cost of the AWS solution. 2) The product is complicated from a configuration standpoint. In order to get anything meaningful out of it, you had to invest a lot of time and effort.We did consider NewRelic. I have experience with that product and do think that it is a solid alternative. Ultimately experience with the simplicity and speed of deployment with Loggly encouraged me to suggest using this again.

We had originally looked into CloudWatch to monitor our resources since we have our stack built in AWS, but found that it would take additional work to setup the dashboards, alerts, and details that we wanted to see in our reports. It was worth the additional investment for us to get the data we needed with less work.

Return on Investment

  • (Positive, actually!) Cost of Acquisition: Loggly is not OpenSource (i.e. Free in this case). Therefore, while you have a cost up front, you have a wealth of support from the people that built it, which can translate into Time savings and/or bringing contractors on-board just for augmentation purposes
  • Negative: Loggly covers a lot of the features that other Open Source Projects cover. That being said, it's regulated by supply and demand, and thus it has a certain "desirability" as a commercial (and therefore stable) project. As a result, unless you are an employee working in a company that sees Loggly as a necessary tool, you will probably not be exposed to it on your own
  • (Positive): Tagging of information, and filtering of logs makes this product worthwhile from a commercial perspective: You can train your employees, and have them filtering logs in a day. If they get stuck, you don't have to pull internal resources away to support them, you simply open a ticket with Loggly.
