Likelihood to Recommend

Tableau Desktop

Great for visualizing basic and complex analytics, can be very useful in a myriad of situations, for example it can be summarized up for grand views for executives and plenty of drill down opportunities for more analyst level staff. This allows the staff to performing the analytics to save time by not having to duplicate reports on different levels for different staff.

Tableau Server

Tableau does a great job of providing a simple interface to access various dashboards by groups, and has powerful development tools, but they can be a little quirky. It would be much better if there were better admin tools to analyze data sources, the dependencies in the database, and who owns the various dashboards throughout the system.

Cons

Tableau Desktop

  • expensive
  • does require some workarounds to solve sometimes simple analytics
  • training for product is also very expensive

Tableau Server

  • I would really like to have the ability to schedule a report as an extract (TXT, CSV, Excel, PDF, or other) that I can either email, place onto a network share, or other transfer method.)

Likelihood to Renew

Tableau Desktop

Tableau Desktop 8.9

Note: my input has little bearing on the actual purchase decision. I'd gladly renew Tableau, since it gives me capabilities that I couldn't not replicate with other tools given my current skill set. I can create data visualization and BI dashboards in a matter of hours which provide real-time data to my entire department without needing to do any web application development. This gives me an incredible amount of leverage, and saves many hours each month.

I am really a fan of tableau for its quick setup, data connection, dashboard creation time and very easy to use UI.As i have used multiple Bi tools like QlikView and SAP BO, i can say all other tools take really long time in performing above functionalities except QlikView which is really fast in term of performing analysis.

Again, assuming that you are working with 100k rows of data or less, it works great. When you increase the number of rows of data by a magnitude of 5 or 10+, there is a significant deterioration in performance

The email and call support is exceptional; although I have had few problems, they are usually solved within an hour. In addition, Tableau has developed a large and knowledgeable community of users who help each other, and I find them to be among the best spokespeople for the software.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

Implementation

Tableau Desktop 8.0

Tableau is a great tool for data visualization. I think it best works for a user who is performing visualization on his own. In order to present the charts or visual graph to a user who doesn't use tableau is very hard. It can be exported in the form of images or a tableau file for which the end user needs to install tableau reader. This is one extra step in implementation which needs to be eliminated it to attain a 9 or a 10 score

The Tableau server installation has been flawless. Our user base is increasing rapidly each quarter. On the It front, we tend to upgrade the server on a bi-annual basis. Which allows use to minimize the disruption to our users. Overall, we are completely satisfied with Tableau server.

Alternatives Considered

Tableau Desktop

Tableau is the most powerful and easy to use of the alternatives, as long as the data sources are properly connected. None of the other tools have allowed us to connect and integrate data into one report in the way that Tableau's data connectivity allows us to. Then the ability to create endless variety in dashboards, following visualization best practices far bests the alternatives which present data in their own style, that does not adhere to best practices. The alternatives also leave you in a situation where data usually has to be copied or exported into another tool like Microsoft Excel in order to create reports, while with Tableau you can do analysis and create reports and dashboards almost simultaneously.

There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

Although tableau is highly interactive and fast but with very large dataset its performance degrades heavily. So up to certain extent its really good but after that we have to take care of its performance issues.
