Overall Satisfaction with Avalara
I work in shared services so it is used in the same accounting department covering sales in 3 locations. We import sales tax calculations into our invoicing software so we don't have to keep up with all the taxes due. It would be a nightmare without it.
Pros

Cons
- Canadian Sales Tax - currently does not differentiate between CAD and USD Currency
- Saved us thousands of dollars on our filing fees we had with a different company
- The last few years there have been significant price increases.

I am unsure. My IT team took care of it. I don't recall hearing about any major issues.

We have been using the Avalara Returns the entire time we've used Avalara. We have used the Nexus Study after everything changed with the online selling platforms. We have used them for back filing a few times also. We benefited from all of them and I would use them again if needed.
Can't remember the name of the old software but the reporting coming out of it was horrible. We have also used an accounting firm to file the returns and they charged me thousands of dollars to give me all my tax returns when I chose to move to Avalara.

Cross-Border Tax Compliance with Avalara
Yes, they send emails letting us know of changes and help with anything that we need to comply.
We expanded into the online ordering. We were able to add Sales Tax at that level.
We already sell internationally
We no longer sell within a marketplace.

Evaluating Avalara and Competitors
Yes - It was too long ago. I can't remember the name of the software. It was a horrible software. Reports looked terrible. We had to pay an accounting firm to file the returns.

We would make sure that the new software handled Canadian Taxes properly on the reporting side in addition to what we already have.

We did but then dropped it. We didn't use it enough to validate the cost.
When I had to back file, they did an exceptional job of helping me thru it.

Make sure that Avalara explains how all the background setup works. We implemented over 10 years ago, so I can only assume that they have improved on this point.

The IT department worked with Avalara and all went well. They were able to provide a temporary "sandbox" to do testing with which was very helpful.
