Overall Satisfaction with ScienceLogic SL1

We have implemented a hosted and a SaaS based solution, both were simple to implement. The SL team were an email or phone call away if we ran into any issues.
We use ScienceLogic for monitoring our Managed Service customers, providing in-depth analysis on a range of hardware and software components in the data center. We also sell, deploy, and configure the application to any of our customers that require a monitoring solution for IT environments. Typically it is deployed across all departments.

Pros

  • Powerful monitoring capability, can ingest data from a lot of sources
  • Good multi-tenancy features
  • Extensible - can write your own powerpacks/code snippets
  • Built-in automation features
  • Business Services

Cons

  • The interface - it is out of the 1980s. Version 8.14 is current and I believe a new version is coming with a new interface. UPDATE - the new interface is much, much better.
  • Community - not a huge user group like you have with other software. i.e. - very few blogs on features/how-tos etc.
  • Monitoring items in VMware is a bit cumbersome, You need to monitor the vCenter endpoint. It will drag in all components relating to it. If you wish to see metrics for particular machines, you also need to create and manage a discovery for that machine--something as simple as file space usage.
  • Powerpack support. If you use a powerpack that is community-built, getting support for this is tough.
  • Support does not have a chat option, however it is typically good. -- UPDATE (2024) - chat has been added as a support option.
Yes, absolutely. ScienceLogic has good features for discovering items in any environment.
We are using it to support new product offerings to our customers, as we are using it to run our operations center.
We have plans to integrate ScienceLogic with: ServiceNOW Automatic restart of critical services
  • Positive: using automation features to attempt fixes.
  • Positive: capable of monitoring devices we had trouble before, and able to build out a service map of all these items.

I would recommend ScienceLogic SL1 in environments where there is a mix of technologies. For us, that means VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix, IBM Mainframe, and all hardware relating to that (i.e. Servers, SANs, Switching Fabric, Network, etc.). Specifically, where you wish to monitor/build up a service-designed view, it is an excellent tool.

ScienceLogic SL1 Implementation

Change management was minimal
  • Change management for deploying collectors (Internal issue and minimal)
  • Based in Europe, dial home collector team based in US, this caused a slight delay

Although other solutions demonstrate strong capabilities, they often serve as point solutions that provide in-depth monitoring of individual technologies. In contrast, ScienceLogic SL1 offers the advantage of integrating with a wide array of products.

Yes - Our bugs have been remediated in PowerPack fixes. While PowerPacks could be released more often, I'm happy with the support we get around bug fixes.

Using ScienceLogic SL1

Dashboard creation could be improved.

Creation of custom reports is very cumbersome. There are ample reports in there, but if you want to create your own ones it is very difficult.
