Act-On

If you are not familiar with Marketing Automation, you should consider whether you have the resources to manage a platform and your content. You do not have to be a techy to work with Act-On, however some HTML and CSS skills come in handy. With Act-On you are up and running in no time. When connecting with a different CRM such as Salesforce, NetSuite, Dynamics or other native integrations, you will learn that Act-On provides all the APIs you need and more importantly all the support you will need.

Spokal

It is Wordpress specific, so if you want to get the full package, a wordpress (standalone - self hosted) site is what is needed.

Pros

  • Email creation - The templates are especially helpful, but the fact that we can customize them to match whatever colors or styles fit the theme of our email message, is a big plus.
  • Customer service - The Act-On team is always reaching out to check in and see how they can help us reach our goals faster and more easily.
  • Deliverability - I never have to worry that we are going to end up on a blacklist or that our emails will not get sent out at the correct time. For over 3 years I have trusted Act-On and their excellent deliverability.

  • Provides an intuitive and logical interface, the likes of which are hard to find
  • Has created a streamlined path from creation or curation to publication and distribution that is both easy to implement and easy to track.
  • Has made it incredibly easy and pain free to get support, discuss requests for possible upgrades, and more.

Cons

  • More training - There are features I haven't used, due to lack of knowing how to use them. The team has offered to train me on these, I just need to take them up on the offer!
  • Email lists - Sometimes if I remove an opt-out from one list, they are still included in another list. This can just be a source of time-consumption as I have to go find where else the contact is in our account.

  • Not really, it works better than we expected.

I'm 71 years old and have obsolete computer skills. I am not well versed in marketing/advertising, and would prefer not to be as involved in these areas as I am. With that background using Act-On has been easy to do and everything I've needed has been made available quickly. It's a very well designed "ask and ye shall receive" system.

Spokal takes away some of the complexity and noise that Wordpress has. Offering a separate login and dashboard to allow a user to create blog posts, check on backlinks, see ranking keywords, social engagement and tracks visitors/ contacts. Spokal provides a lot of functionality that would typically require the purchase of several products e.g. Hootsuite, SEO Moz, SEO pressor, Hubspot. What I really like is the content calendar. I simply drag and drop of my blog posts into my calendar to post to twitter, linkedin and facebook. This is an easy way to repost evergreen content and build my following on twitter. The twitter builder is constantly looking for relevant profiles and conversations based on my defined criteria. The tool automatically likes the twitter user which drives traffic to my sight and actually helps me find followers and potential influencers. This product is ideal for people new to internet marketing or small business owners who don't want to be overwhelmed by the effort to learn, manage and run several tools or wordpress plugins. I have been with Spokal since the start and I continue to be impressed by the support and raft of new functionality being added.

When we starting using Spokal some WordPress related publish issues occurred. Spokal support did great in solving these issues and was not just pointing to the WordPress version and a bug. WordPress released a new version fixing that bug a day later. All other support requests were handled with high speed and with full satisfaction.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

I kind of already covered this in my previous response.Manticore - Nice people, product didn't integrate with Oracle CRM, used it for email blasting only. Such a disappointment on the integration.Oracle CRM Marketing Automation - Good product, I believe it's being phased out since they purchased Eloqua. Long wait on support. I can't recommend it based on this. Hire a consultant to help you get started which adds to your expense.Evaluated:Marketo - VERY detailed, did cool stuff, but lots to program and set up. More than we needed and I didn't have time to spend that much time programming it.Eloqua - Okay product - some good stuff here, but sales rep. was rough. Based on previous experience with Oracle support, it was ruled out.Pardot - Good product, good sales team, seriously considered it. Plus, SF.com owns them which meant it will easily integrate with SF.com. Support - fill out the form was the tie breaker. There were a few other things Act-On shared with me that also tipped the scales as well.

Return on Investment

  • We've been able to pinpoint engaged prospects based on their responses and behaviors to a mix of digital marketing efforts.
  • We've streamlined our webinar creation, marketing, and analysis.
  • We've been able to build workflows and triggers in Salesforce that help automate the sales process based on Act-On activities such as form completion.

  • Much faster build on our Twitter audience
  • The rest is still too early to say. Just started using the product about 6 weeks ago.
