ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations).It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

Freshsales is great for a CRM with integrated telephony, where users are of an entirely Inside Sales team. It is also very strong if you value a CRM that allows you to customise fields, descriptions, and displayed information for all of your Leads/Customers/Accounts/Deals.It is also great if your users have technical backgrounds, as the customisation and manual configuration of automation steps can be somewhat cumbersome.It isn't great if you are not happy to use their webapp to replace your email client (It works well for sending and receiving emails, but if you switch back to Gmail and open a sent message it is marked as read by the recipient, so it is important to only stay within the Freshsales client for reviewing sent emails - at the time of writing).For those who rely on outside sales teams, or want a solution that plays nice 'out of the box', I imagine you might find Freshsales to be a little difficult to use.

  • Easily integrates with your email program. I use Office/Outlook, and it syncs very easily.
  • Very easy to schedule and manage prospecting efforts.
  • Generates customized reporting, and is easy to modify based on your needs.

Cons

  • ActiveCampaign is still a relatively small and new company. As such, there are some features missing. For example, there is currently no way to change the design of any internal emails or notifications sent. This means if you are a reseller, any notifications your clients get from the system will be stuck with the blue color scheme.
  • Another big feature missing if the support for SSL on custom domains. Again, if you are a reseller and want your clients to access their system on a custom subdomain, the connection won't be secure unless you use ActiveCampaigns generated domain.

  • My only frustration with Freshsales is that it is taking a little longer than I anticipated to integrate with my VOIP phone provider (Ring Central). It is in process, but it has taken longer than I had hoped to be one of the selected phone providers that they integrate with.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign is reasonably priced and provides the most powerful suite of features for email marketing, email automation, and CRM features. I love the power of integrating my email marketing tool with my website and sales funnels. The automation options are endless and almost overwhelming. This is exactly the type of tool we need to creatively create solutions for our clients. ActiveCampaign is ahead of the curve when it comes to the future of relationship marketing.

Return on Investment

  • It allowed us to work with clients who objected to spending bigger amounts on CRM systems.
  • It requires additional work due to all integrations - that could be a negative if you don't account for that when you create your pricing structure.
