ADP is well suited when you have a large workforce. We have over 450 employees and frequently have those who are hired and those who retire. It's such a great opportunity to give employees ownership of their own employee information.I think if you have a small business, it may be hard to justify the cost of ADP. However, the fact that they can take care of your payroll and taxes and such is pretty awesome.

With how our management team is using Gusto, it appears that it's great as a tool to track payroll and allow employees to print out paystubs and other payroll documents. However, it doesn't look like it's well suited to see health insurance plan info, submit time off requests or other HR abilities.

Pros

  • Responding to issues through customer service. For example, having a custom report made, having pay codes adjusted or changed.
  • Payroll - the payroll process is smooth and there are graphs to analyze the current payroll cycle and it can be compared to prior payrolls. Great reporting from payroll as well.

  • It is extremely inexpensive for what you get, especially compared to some other options. Their pricing model of monthly instead of per-pay run makes it great for companies who run many ad-hoc payrolls instead of a standard monthly or bi-weekly payroll
  • It is very easy and intuitive to set up
  • It integrates easily with both Xero and QuickBooks Online
  • Their support and onboarding team is extremely responsive and helpful

Cons

  • Several bugs caused by the use of unsupported internet browsers. In general, it seems as though there is a lag between browser upgrades, and seamless navigation on the system.
  • 'Lack of attention to detail' implementation issues, which had actual net effects on effected employees requiring adjustments, all directly attributed to ADP Implementation Team. Ex. Double Time hours did not have any wages attached to them for approximately a month after go-live, which after being discovered needed to be corrected.
  • A few normal recurring payroll activities take a few more steps, and are a little more confusing than they feel they should be.

  • I'd rather the payroll entries come into the accounting system as a journal entry instead of as a bill (or least to have the option to choose)

While Gusto does have a few flaws on the whole it is a very user-friendly software that does a great job of making a very complicated and mundane task quite easy and it is also very cost-effective. But I find that it is not a great fit for everyone and there have been a few mistakes in the payroll tax filings that have caused me and my clients some concern

Lack of documentation and test environment make it extremely difficult to deploy work processes through the system. While there are a handful of things throughout the system that work well, particularly from an employee's perspective, many tasks, which would be simple for practitioner users in other systems, require these users to ask for administrator support.Additionally, the ghosts in the ADP machine cause established process (e.g. automated report delivery) to stop working with no notice and no error report.

The payroll support is excellent, but the support on the technical side is lacking. The support for the portal is especially lacking. I think they need more training to be able to serve the customer more efficiently. I have had issues with employees not being able to log in even after resetting the password, and have had to call back a couple of different times to get results. Luckily I don't have issues that I need to call them about very often.

The instructions from the recruiting agency on how to use the system was pretty straightforward. It provided step-by-step procedures on where you would need to log in your hours as well as what you would need to highlight (i.e. regular, overtime, etc.) detailing the type of hours that were worked overall. The handout also provided some pictures of the application

Implementation

Either assign more than one specialist to the implementation process, or assign less clients to the implementation specialist. The process requires attention to detail and the ability to test and re-test as well as verify the information. It also requires a lot of back and forth between the client ant the implementation specialist, so they need to be readily available during the whole implementation process.

Alternatives Considered

I did not specifically select ADP WFN. I was cautiously optimistic when it was identified as the tool the organization was going to move forward with. I've previously used Oracle's HRIS and found it to be non-intuitive, overly complex and cumbersome. I was thrilled at how easy ADP WFN was to quickly learn and immediately put into practice

Gusto is very affordable and offers a solid foundation for payroll and HR. They have also recently released a new tier which offers a few additional bells and whistles for those companies looking for higher-touch service or additional features. It is great to have this flexibility, which isn't always offered by the bigger players.
