Chose Unitrends
Worked with Sungard Availability Services a few years back and they were much more flexible with managing archived data.

We selected the Unitrends Data Center [Backup and Recovery] because it integrated well with the Appliance and we can count on Unitrends support should issues …
Chose Unitrends
Compared Unitrends amongst other vendors. We liked their sales presentation and the product seemed to provide more Return on Investment as compared with other vendors.
Chose Unitrends
Unitrends appliance works well it has recovery verification, can be backed up to multiple destinations. Can be differential or always incremental. Can be backed up to the cloud from the same console. Snapshots can be taken of the VM and the backups are compressed using …
Chose Unitrends
In the past I have used Symantec Backup Exec, Windows Server backup and also Windows System Center. Unitrends is easier to use and I don't have to worry about licensing. Unitrends prices based on disk size not the number of units being backed up.
Chose Unitrends
I have not used or evaluated any other products similar for more than 4 years because I've been completely happy with the Unitrends solution. It has met and exceeded my needs and continues to perform well in our mixed environment. The addition of cloud backup to the appliance …
Chose Unitrends
Unitrends was a complete system. It did not require additional devices or licenses. Therefore it is faster and costs less.
Chose Unitrends
We are currently migrating to Veeam for our production environment, as the costs for the software and hardware are far less than Unitrends, and the software offers the same protection that we currently enjoy. When comparing the two products, I could not see a reason to continue …
Chose Unitrends
The biggest difference between the Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance and the other two options we used, Veeam and Windows Server Backup was the physical appliance. The other two were software based and were not giving our organization a fully unified backup strategy or …
Chose Unitrends
Unitrends gives you a better backup configuration of applications than Acronis. Veeam is a great backup solution but Unitrends out beats [them] by giving you reliable local backups.
Chose Unitrends
At the time we purchased, Unitrends was the only company I would have considered. Our very knowledgeable (hardware-agnostic) hardware consultant suggested Unitrends, and at the price we paid for the functionality, we didn't need to look further.

That said, as much as we love …
Chose Unitrends
While evaluating many other backup solution providers (Asigra, Cisco, IBM, Dell, HP) Unitrends provided the best bang for the buck. Additionally, our Unitrends provider, Cordicate IT, made the transition to Unitrends a success.
Chose Unitrends
Each seems to have a niche and a great following but for effectiveness, managability, and value we had no question about going with Unitrends.

If implemented as a Cloud Service provider (Public Cloud), In House Solution (Private Cloud) or a mixture of both (Hybrid Cloud):
  • The Agentless Architecture means there are less support burdens.
  • Encryption at Source gives the customer confidence their data is secure.
  • WAN Optimisation (Compression & Block Level Incremential Forever and De-deupe of Data), enables a large amount of Data to be protected offsite.
  • One step Backup to both Local and Offsite storage enables LAN speed restores with offsite peace of mind.
  • Asigra Replication from DS-System to DS-System enables another geographically separate copy of the data.

More than enough for small companies with several on-prem servers. In 2021, it wouldn't be wise to pit all important data to a single backup service. Carbonite Server is solid, but it's not 100% reliable so I'd definitely recommend having multiple backup services either on the cloud in conjunction with other backup services so the user has multiple safety nets in case of disaster and failed granular restorations.

We have a traditional stack and pretty typical needs as a manufacturer. I have used and evaluated everything out there, but the Unitrends solution fits very well and was competitively priced. I would think if it fits us, it could fit anyone like us with a similar stack.

Pros
Asigra
  • Provides capability of local backups while maintaining remote copies on cloud to ensure faster recoveries of recent data and remote protection of all data.
  • Helps reduce cost of long term retention by leveraging the BLM functionality.
  • It does not need specialized hardware for it to work. Customers and Service Providers can choose their own infrastructure and do not need to rely on any OS or storage based replication even for deploying replication of backups.
  • Supports wide range of environments including virtual environments with remarkable features like remote VDR with incremental restores.

  • Simple administrative web interface - It's easy to provision users, look at data usage stats, disable users, and update policies to control what folders users are allowed to backup, and what options they can access
  • Easy client installation - Installing and updating clients was very simple. The client would notify the user when a new update was approved by the site admins, and they typically went very smoothly.
  • Good performance - Backups went fairly fast, and were generally invisible to the user, other than the icon updating on files to indicate whether the current version of a file was backed up or not.

  • It has fully automated and customizable dashboards that can run with less administrative attention.
  • It should be able to run on virtual machines or be deployed as a virtual machine within MS Azure or AWS.
  • It's AI-based ransomware detection helps to understand data characteristics and alerts for ransomware attacks.

Cons
Asigra
  • We would like to see Asigra come out with a Replication Model for quick Recovery of systems upon Disaster. We can have quicker recovery, DR, with Virtual Machines but we would like to have Physical Machine recovery in less than 2 hours. Replication can accomplish this...
  • We would like to see Geolocation and remote wipe for endpoint devices
  • We would like to see the solution provide easy "roll back" after a disaster.

  • While overall file restoration is easy to do, obtaining earlier versions is not as user friendly as it could be. You need to enter a date and click search to bring up the latest versions as of the date entered. That’s fine, but what is missing is the ability to see all versions of an individual file. If I am looking for a past file version I want to be able to view the file history as a subset of that file (in other words I should be able to click a + sign and expand to see past versions of the file). Otherwise I am just guessing which dates the file was changed in the past. Sometimes that’s OK, but Mozy needs to build in this enhanced, but necessary feature.
  • A couple of years ago, for non enterprise users, Mozy made radical storage and pricing changes forcing myself and many users off their system, as the price for the same storage was going up significantly. So be careful when using Mozy as past experience has shown they are willing to make major changes regardless of the negative impact on their users.

  • Errors on backup jobs could be more clearly explained. As the administrator of the device for my company, I often don't know what caused an error, and can't tell from the error information what happened or caused the error.
  • Updates of the devices should have an automatic option. It takes to much time to do an update to the devices if updates haven't been maintained.
  • Shutdown and restarting the device should be available from the main UI screen to eliminate some time when doing updates or if you're doing some maintenance on the device.

Asigra
  • Asigra is a great entry way into the cloud.
  • Compliance is a tricky thing. Jumping backup software means having to deal with previous copies somehow. Asigra is built for the long haul.
  • Asigra is continuing to increase their feature stack. They have made huge steps in the VM backup in the last 3 years and continue to implement features there.
  • As far as cloud backup software goes, there are many that can do it, but none that do it as well as Asigra.

Carbonite Server Backup does not integrate or support any reporting; it is not good at it. We required monthly and quarterly reports for audit. If we fail in that we get fined or we have to pay a certain amount of money to customer. It does not support cloud instances and we are using N2WS for the cloud instances. This is an additional burden for customers.

We have grown very attached to the Unitrends appliances and their use for recovery and other file restoration needs as well as data archival, data replication to other appliance and data migration to other servers or long term storage requirements. The appliances work well and the support for them is very good as well.

Usability
Asigra
It is a bit rough around the edges and the GUI feels like a wrap around of a CLI but it is simple to use. The problem comes in when there is an error code you are usually chasing down the error code in the specific vendor's forums rather than Asigra's

Out of all the vendor we deal with they are one of the best when it comes to customers service. Reliable, you can reach them by telephone easily, Great overall can not say anything to the contrary. Usibility is excellent. I recommend them highly whether you need a simple backup ofr more complex for servers etc.

I have never used such an easy product that is stable and scalable like Unitrends. I have been running backups for MANY years. On premise, tape, disk, cloud, you name it. Unitrends is very flexible, stable and has incredible reporting features. It's nice when management requests a report and it takes you 5 minutes to run it and dump it to PDF. How can you beat that?

Reliability and Availability
Asigra
Over 6 consecutive years our Asigra Backend had 99.99% uptime and provided 7x24 data restore availability.
Software is robust in operations, provides N+1 node architecture to protect against failure of half of the nodes (majority of the nodes still up) and software based replication to protect against data loss across two geographically independent datacenter locations. Why not 10 points? Some major upgrades still require short downtime within a planned maintenance windows.

Support Rating

They respond quickly on your request. They ask for details at the time of logging the support request itself ensuring the first response is not for collecting the basic details only. They refund you the support request if they find it as a functionality issue. They follow up on you to ensure you are satisfied and happy with the response and resolution that they have provided.

I usually find what I need to know by looking in the Carbonite knowledge base online. We haven't had any major problems, usually we just need clarification on a point or more details about a feature so we look it up. We haven't had to call in for help in quite awhile.

They're incredible, attentive, thorough. They make sure my issue is resolved and follow up. I'm usually behind on giving them a reply or an update. They have always gone above and beyond for me, and I'll continue to do the same for them.

Online Training
Asigra
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

I would say that it has the same functionality as the three mentioned above in their respective fields (might have a bit less than some of them) but Asigra offers all of this and more so if you are looking for a single backup solution across the entire firm then Asigra is the much better choice

Netbak is a great product but we also had a secondary issue of having to backup several PC's on site and at remote locations. Carbonite helped with both and gave us one central admin console to be able to check the progress of all our backups, where netbak would have required us to setup a tunnel or use the internet to move data back to our main office.

Symantec Backup Exec was the primary tool used for backups for years. We also used Veeam for some Office 365/Exchange backups. Unitrends once configured and set up works very well against the competition. Backup Exec interface was more user friendly. The search tool for exploring backups was much better than Unitrends as well. Unitrends is much faster if you need to restore an entire VM or large file folders. Also once you have Unitrends all set up, it is very low maintenance, it just works. If something fails 9/10 it will correct itself on the next backup that is scheduled to run

  • Less anxiety for the IT department, we have backup plan and that is worth a lot to us.
