The Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliances are hardware developed for data backup and management. They cover enterprise backup, ransomware detection, recovery assurance, proactive monitoring, and cloud continuity into a single platform for organizations of all sizes.
Back when I was vetting this solution, I tested Zenith and Unitrends. Both were more complicated and expensive - especially considering the amount of end points that I needed to backup.
Barracuda is MUCH easier to set up and use then Unitrends. Unitrends does not offer direct download of backed up files from their cloud, while Barracuda does. Unitrends uses a non-standard and difficult to use implementation of retention/archiving. Unitrends' backup to Amazon …
Barracuda was a much more cost effective solution than the others we evaluated. Its interface was light years ahead of Avamar, and its cost was much lower than Unitrends. Avamar had it beat in backup time, and Unitrends was a more mature product. In the end, Barracuda won out …
We tried the Barracuda Backup appliance which showed promise however, it did not allow us to archive to our existing tape library. This was a deal killer for us. The Unitrends appliance still allows us to utilize our tape drive for archiving purposes. This was not an option for …
While looking for a new backup solution, we also evaluated the Barracuda Backup appliance. While this solution met many of our needs, one of our requirements was the ability to archive to tape, which Barracuda didn't provide.
I was not involved with the deployment of Barracuda Backup since I started at my current company after implementation. Back then I used Barracuda for a limited amount of time and it did the job, but the cost was more expensive and that's why we decided to switch to Unitrends …
We compared Unitrends to Barracuda and selected Unitrends based [on] total cost over a three-year period. The Barracuda product was more than double the cost over the same three-year period. Additionally, both appliances offer similar feature sets and support, but the …
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery's artificial intelligence plays a major role in all
the appliances that run a scanning procedure during each and every backup to analyze
the change logs of the files and identify if the backups are infected by
Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] has a much better UI. It's easy to navigate. Barracuda was a little pricey, and if you were to reduce your backup size under the current tier, you had to call in to get them to adjust the space requirements on the bill. They were …
Most companies have been using tape backups for along time and Unitrends allows to completely move away from tapes.
Once the Unitrends solution is in place, I don't really have to worry about it. I get notifications to my email about every job and that's how this is monitored.
VEEAM is the product that I decided to go to from Unitrends recently, as it is something that I have relied on in past companies. I am happy with the backups, however they do take up a lot more space than what Unitrends has provided. Barracuda does not have the same ROI as …
We found the Unitrends solution to be a better fit than Legato, Barracuda, Dell/EMC and other solutions. They are relatively price competitive, and frequently offer good upgrade/expansion financial incentives. They could improve on the scalability of solutions, instead of …
Unitrends stacks up very well against the other solutions I've used in the past. Feature set is very good. The thing that tips the scale heavily in their favor for me is the support team - they do an awesome job for us.

Barracuda is what we were using before, it was unreliable, support was iffy at best, and the interface was horrendous. After numerous issues, we asked one of our providers to look into other options and they came back with Unitrends. We have been happy with it since. Unitrends …
In the past I have used Symantec Backup Exec, Windows Server backup and also Windows System Center. Unitrends is easier to use and I don't have to worry about licensing. Unitrends prices based on disk size not the number of units being backed up.
For us the cost, simplicity of use, system design, and features of the Unitrends system all matched up well to our organization's needs. They were products with more robust feature sets, but the cost was prohibitive. And, there were less expensive alternatives. But, they tended …
Barracuda and Datto could only do cloud replication, not site-to-site. Barracuda could not act as a host server in an emergency. Barracuda was cheaper, but Datto was way more expensive. Unitrends was the winner on features and cost.
We've been using Unitrends for 5+ years and one thing that we've always enjoyed is the great customer support and hardware monitoring so we don't have to waste our time making sure that everything is running smoothly. We've had a few hiccups over the years, but all-in-all …
We had a very old version of Symantec in place that Unitrends replaced. We didn't upgrade it because we were looking for a separate appliance for our solution. We did look at Barracuda briefly and have nothing against it, it's a good solution in it's own right, we just found …
This was our first backup appliance that we used/evaluated. Prior to this all our backups were done on tape using Symantec Backup Exec. Because of the amount of time spent on the management of the tapes, the poor user interface, and low reliability and that we were adding 3 …
Unitrends crushes Backup Exec in terms of usability and reliability. It seems very comparable to the Barracuda system we used at my previous employer. We went with it based on a recommendation by a backup specialist at CDW.
Unitrends was able to give us a feature set unmatched in its price range. Their support was fantastic while we were playing with our demo and the professionalism of every representative we spoke with was a comfort.
Unitrends is appliance based, did not want to have to purchase tape library and subscribe to local vaulting. Unitrends cloud and appliance came in cheaper and better recommended then the competitors.
Veeam and Barracuda were both tested before we made the decision to use Unitrends. Neither solution filled all of our needs like Unitrends did. Veeam could not backup our physical servers and Barracuda was outside our budget at the time.
If you are a small business with a few machines and your backups aren't of servers that are public facing. If you had to restore a server from backup, it would take a day at least. So, if the server being restored was public facing, that may impact customer relations.
We have a traditional stack and pretty typical needs as a manufacturer. I have used and evaluated everything out there, but the Unitrends solution fits very well and was competitively priced. I would think if it fits us, it could fit anyone like us with a similar stack.
Set and Forget. I rarely have to touch the Backup Servers. Once you specify your criteria, you really don't need to change it unless you have a physical change.
Alerts. When there are issues such as files failing to backup or a directory no longer present, you get an email giving you all the information you need. In addition you will typically get contacted by support about it.
Recovery is very simple. The restore browser is very good and it's just easy to find and restore data when you need it.
The pricing solution has gone from allowing on-premise ownership to forced cloud extortion. Basically, if you buy now you will be ok, but those of us who "owned" our solution previously are now forced to subscribe to the cloud model or be stuck with a brick.
Errors on backup jobs could be more clearly explained. As the administrator of the device for my company, I often don't know what caused an error, and can't tell from the error information what happened or caused the error.
Updates of the devices should have an automatic option. It takes to much time to do an update to the devices if updates haven't been maintained.
Shutdown and restarting the device should be available from the main UI screen to eliminate some time when doing updates or if you're doing some maintenance on the device.
We have grown very attached to the Unitrends appliances and their use for recovery and other file restoration needs as well as data archival, data replication to other appliance and data migration to other servers or long term storage requirements. The appliances work well and the support for them is very good as well.
Dashboards and interfaces within Barracuda Backup are very easy to navigate, with clear success/warnings shown. Setting up backup jobs is probably one of the most simplest tasks - compared to competitors we trialed. Trouble shooting backup issues is also simple due to clear errors (VSS errors shown in a understandable format for example)
I have never used such an easy product that is stable and scalable like Unitrends. I have been running backups for MANY years. On premise, tape, disk, cloud, you name it. Unitrends is very flexible, stable and has incredible reporting features. It's nice when management requests a report and it takes you 5 minutes to run it and dump it to PDF. How can you beat that?
They are always quick to get you routed to a tech support person and always get follow up after contacting them. Last experience was amazing, she adjusted my boxes and they perform even better. I cannot say enough about the support. We had some trouble with one of the windows servers leaving the volume shadow copy out there and would fail. They worked with us to adjust and get working. After that it has been months since I have had to do anything with the server to keep the backups running.
They're incredible, attentive, thorough. They make sure my issue is resolved and follow up. I'm usually behind on giving them a reply or an update. They have always gone above and beyond for me, and I'll continue to do the same for them.
The Unitrends employees involved in the installation were very friendly and knowledgeable. A certain degree of hiccups can be expected during any installation but never shook my confidence because of the friendly and knowledgeable team that was assigned to my project.
Each backup solution has its pros and cons, and each customer has their needs, and budget constraints. Barracuda Backup has helped us dramatically in the area of being able to provide customers a cost-effective solution, that's easy to manage and is one of those things you're not having to check on daily, or switch out backup tapes, or hard drives.
Symantec Backup Exec was the primary tool used for backups for years. We also used Veeam for some Office 365/Exchange backups. Unitrends once configured and set up works very well against the competition. Backup Exec interface was more user friendly. The search tool for exploring backups was much better than Unitrends as well. Unitrends is much faster if you need to restore an entire VM or large file folders. Also once you have Unitrends all set up, it is very low maintenance, it just works. If something fails 9/10 it will correct itself on the next backup that is scheduled to run
Countless positive impacts from being able to restore lost or deleted files - or even restoring an entire server.
Being able to restore files for users and allowing them to recover lost work or preventing them from having to redo files at any level is priceless. You can't accurately measure lost time of employees having to recreate files. Especially things like 3D drawings and multi-sheet spreadsheet.
It has saved some deleted file server data for our business department.
We have lost some reports for the business department due to an overlooked setting that make the backup reports look great, but the server was not being backed up in reality.
Less anxiety for the IT department, we have backup plan and that is worth a lot to us.
