It's a decent system if you're a pure IT shop and want to become ITIL-aligned. It forces everyone into an ITIL mentality - service level agreements, change management, and asset tracking. It's very rote, for better and for worse. It's not appropriate at all as a customer-facing or non-IT facing self-service tool. You will never get your end users to really understand how to use the interface.

Intermapper is a light weight, quick and easy to use monitoring application. It will get you up and monitoring key infrastructure devices with a simple management interface and effective alert system that doesn't generate a lot of noise. It provides mobile device access through a web interface and is relatively inexpensive.

New Relic
New Relic its an excellent tool for monitoring services used on the SAAS universe, like web servers, relational and nosql dbms, reverse proxies, text databases, etc. Its also a powerful tool to monitor resource usage on said servers. However, its not well fitted to monitor custom services - if you need to generate alerts based on logs or database information, for example

Pros

  • ITIL ticketing (incidents, problems, etc.).
  • Change orders.
  • Matching up its asset management system with incidents/change orders.

  • The best thing about Intermapper is that it is map-based. You start by building your map, which is done completely automatically. I've used many different monitoring software packages, Solarwinds, Nagios, Opmanager, and it is a royal PITA to create live maps with those.
  • Another great feature is that it shows you, visually, the bandwidth utilization of your network by using "ants" and color codes. Incredibly useful.
  • Alarms are very easy to setup, again much easier than the packages mentioned above.

New Relic
  • It gives us insights of applications, infrastructure, clouds very well.
  • The alerting system in New Relic helps us to easily identify the root cause which reduces the MTTR.
  • It has new features related to AI which helps to troubleshoot any problem in a very short time it gives future predictions also.

Cons
Discontinued Products
  • The user interface (UX) is antiquated and clunky. Compared to ServiceNow, it feels like it's 15 years behind.
  • It's complicated - We do routine internal training just to get people to use it correctly.
  • It doesn't have an automated way of discovering assets. Everything has to be force-fed.

  • Setting up probes in bulk can be difficult, so it can take a long time to get the system set up correctly to start.
  • Sometimes the probes can be sensitive and report false positives.
  • Interface can be a little clunky and non intuitive at times.

New Relic
  • And while powerful, building tailored dashboards with organ-specific metrics (such as energy load variance across regions) can be difficult to navigate. The UI isn't as drag-and-drop easy, and query-based widgets typically involve some trial and error for non-devs.
  • Alerts may be hypersensitive or over general. I We often get a spam of non-critical alerts while doing load testing, all overhauling to me alone and making it difficult to identify actual issues especially in energy systems where spikes are very common.
  • With our expanding fleet of Iot devices, the per-host pricing model is becoming expensive, quickly. More detailed billing based on microservices, or that works at sensor level, would make it more adaptable for energy platforms.

New Relic
The only issue that we have had with New Relic is that the price might be a little expensive for smaller companies. The amount of data you store in New Relic impacts the cost, and can get away from you if you don't work closely with the vendor. Overall though the application is top notch.

I have given this much rating as I am used New Relic in different sectors and for different use cases like its K8s monitoring, infra monitoring, full stack monitoring as compare to other tools New Relic gives data in a formatted and connected way, and also it is giving us value for money. It also launches new features day by day which helps users to track the issue very quickly. It also supports OTel integrations which is the latest trend of observability tools. thats why I had given this much rating to New Relic.

We have to hire 2 full-time 3rd-party consultants to run this application. That tells me it's not a very IT-friendly, vendor-supported application. Compare that with, say, SolarWinds, which is much easier for regular IT staff to customize without sacrificing features and capability. Sure, we have to bring in Loop1 to consult for us when we need to do a major SolarWinds config change or need a really unusual custom query built, but we never need more than 10 hours of consulting per month.

The product works well and is very easy to maintain. As such, we haven't had many occasions to use support. When we have called them they were easy to contact and responsive to our questions. We have had the product for years and it may have been a year or better since the last time we contacted them.

The support team has been really helpful and resolved most of the issues on time. However, for a couple of issues, several follow-ups were needed to elicit a reasonable response. The issue was deeply technical and could have been investigated only by their Architects, and bringing them into the ticket took longer than needed

New Relic
It's better to start by implementing New Relic in one project and test everything. Try to follow best recommended practices and read all the official documentation. Everything seems well tested. Then, start by installing agents to the rest of your projects and keep a close look to all logs and metrics New Relic gives you.

I did not select CA. If it were up to me, I would migrate us to ServiceNow. The user interface on ServiceNow is 100% more modern and 200% more user friendly. With ServiceNow, the front page for end users makes it clear: one button that says "Ask for something" and one button that says "Report a problem". That's what our end users need. The biggest problem we have in our organization is that our end users don't report issues to the Help Desk often enough and rarely ask for things through the Help Desk. A clean, simple self-service option like this would open up a world of new information for our customer service team.

Intermapper is a cross between WhatsUp Gold and Nagios. WhatsUp Gold being for a less technical end-user and Nagios doing more than just SNMP scans and up down monitoring.

Data Dog has solutions that look more attractive, but not at their price point. We have also tried to build a solution straight from the Cloud, where our business is built, but some things are too hard to replicate. This shows that New Relic is useful and helps our efficiency.

  • It helped make us an ITIL shop.
  • It was integral during our large IT consolidation 10 years ago in merging 10 different IT departments into one by converging on one ticketing system for all IT issues.
  • Its lack of user-friendliness has gated us from being able to deploy a true self-service IT help desk.

  • Downtime costs money. Every minute we can get ahead of an outage is time that a plant is not sitting there waiting. We don't need to wait for a call from a plant, we know they are down immediately and we can begin troubleshooting.

  • We were able to quickly identify our most time consuming APIs. In some cases we were able to bring down times for some apis from 4s to 200ms.
  • We were able to identify our slowest database queries and optimize them for quicker response times.
