Google
It is well suited in cases where your company/organization is looking for a low/no cost remote desktop solution, or is looking for something that can be used by most anyone right away. Most organizations don't want things to be too complex, especially with a remote desktop solution, which is generally not very complex software to begin with. It would be less appropriate in cases where the company/organization has already purchased licensing for a commercial product, and/or has been heavily using a commercial product for some time.

It’s great for all those support needs and remote updating software, things like that. I have not found any particular place where it would not be suitable to use it a lot of the time. We use it even within the same site, to save us from having to run out of the office and around the building, all the time.

Pros
Google
  • Unlike Microsoft's Remote Desktop, this program is the same across platforms, which is helpful for users.
  • This program also allows direct control over the desktop (like TeamViewer) and doesn't give you a simulated log on (like Remote Desktop). This is advantageous for seeing exactly what's on the screen but can make it a little laggy.
  • The interface is very nice and clear once it's set up. It's obvious which computer is which and it's just a couple of clicks from opening the program to a connection.
  • The mobile app is also really really well done.

  • Connection speed. Users have reported very little latency (and I have verified this myself administering a work server from home).
  • Support. The sales and technical support departments at Splashtop have been extremely helpful and very quick to respond to inquiries or requests. Samuel Frescas and Aaron Changeur both are excellent to work with and go above and beyond to assist.
  • Ease of setup. Installation consists of two pieces of software installed on applicable devices (device remoting from and device remoting to). Users are invited by email, create their own accounts, and can then be assigned to their individual laptop and desktop workstations. Setup for each user was able to be completed within the span of 15 minutes, from account creation to remoting into their workstation.
  • Account management. Admins have comprehensive control over users and endpoints. All aspects of this are configurable and straightforward.

Cons
Google
  • More fluid video rendering. Does a good job, but could use a more consistent framerate at times.
  • A way to easier switch between multiple monitors.
  • Adding an ability to zoom for multi-monitor display. Sometimes on a single screen it can get difficult to read if trying to view them all.

  • Splashtop had a functionality issue with a Mac OS upgrade recently that prevented remote access for about two weeks. I had to request tickets directly and they had known about the impending issue without a collaborative solution between them and Apple.
  • Better Beta testing for version upgrades is always needed. Software is constantly changing so these types of platforms need to be at the forefront of resolving interoperability issues with Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.
  • The tech support for the issue I experience could have been more proactive. I was providing my client's IT provider and Splashtop with updates on the bug issue, where it should have been the other way around.

A very easy lightweight tool that is completely scalable and deployed via google admin platform. The tool is free to use and works extremely well with the chrome devices we currently have deployed. Any organization using chrome or google suites should look into this tool as it's much easier to use then other remote software in the market

I believe that I will renew Splashtop without any problems in the coming years as eating stable costs without increases even in critical periods such as the Covid virus, Splashtop allows access to 25 unattended stations and has continuous updates and new features. It also allows resale to users with sub-accounts

Usability

I would rarely give a 10 for usability to any tool, but Chrome Remote Desktop doesn't deserves 9 either :) I find all options easy to understand. I don't have to work my brain to understand how things work when using Chrome Remote Desktop.

It's hard to find any significant faults with Splashtop. It offers a very responsive remote access experience with clear and simple interface. There's very little learning curve as it's toolbar mimics other popular remote access solutions graphical user interface. It's gives you access to your remote computer quickly and stays out of your way

I've never had any issues with it, nor any connectivity issues. They always say when they'll be maintaining the system and it's always in the odd hours, so nobody uses then. But I've never had any issues.

Support Rating
Google
The only support I ever accessed were help files and web tutorials. I never tried to access personal support, mostly because I don't believe much of it is available. As a free service, my expectations for support are pretty low; that said, Chrome Remote Desktop is easy enough to configure and troubleshoot even with limited technical knowledge.

They are quick to answer by email. I was surprised at the quick response. I have only had to reach out to the team from Splashtop once or twice for support, and that's a good thing. They were responsive and friendly. Offered some good advice and shortcuts. They realized that my time is important.

Chrome Remote Desktop seems to be a an easy to use and efficient program. Such as TeamViewer, however TeamViewer offers more program features such as able to control a device's function (shutting down, restarting, audio input, cmd etc). With those added program features I believe Chrome Remote Desktop can almost be up to par with TeamViewer.

  • Allows my boss to facilitate workshops on Google Meet for her one client. She has two use 2 monitors for this and struggles setting up the slides and participants because she is older. So, it allows her to participate in these virtual workshops and make it easier for her to participate in.
  • Our team all work remotely, so I can access my boss's laptop to find files she may have on her computer and forgot to store on our shared database. Saving time and frustration for all.
  • I can access my boss's laptop to work on her computer (i.e. organize or delete files) and she doesn't even have to be there. She just leaves her computer on/open, and I can access whenever I choose without having to schedule with her or have her sitting there. She can do other activities, and we don't have to abide by each other's time constraints/schedules.
