Rubrik is cloud data management and enterprise backup software provided by Palo Alto-based Rubrik, Inc. It is a software platform that provides backup, instant recovery, archival, search, analytics, compliance, and copy data management in one secure fabric across data centers and clouds.
There is no comparison, Rubrik worked right out of the box and even has support for IBM DB2 databases. Patches and upgrades have been performed without any issues. Database backups are run using default settings without any noticeable impact on the databases/servers and …
Rubrik crushed Avamar in a side-by-side comparison. Out of the box, Rubrik was up and running quicker, absorbing backups faster and integrating with VMware much better than Avamar. We had faults with Avamar backing up SQL servers that did not happen with Rubrik. Overall, …

Rubrik is a more straightforward product to implement and manage. We mainly went with Rubrik for security reasons like ransomware protection and immutable database.

Of all the tools Cohesity was the closest to Rubrik but the lack of Nutanix support was the deciding factor for us. HYCU is native to Nutanix but without the Nutanix Objects the deduping rate was limited. Veratas fell in the older school classification of process that did …

Easier deployment integrating with vCenter and backup policy assignments.
Well, the software is the same in all. But what Rubrik offers is way better and different from these products. There are a lot of options and capability features which are offered by Rubrik such as Live recovery which we have implemented recently on a NAS share and it has …
Networker never did work right for us, but Rubrik was a quick deployment. Avamar was both complex and unreliable. Often backups were corrupt, and would take hours to restore. Everyone on our team knows how to use Rubrik with little training, and the backups usually complete …
Setup and upgrades are very quickly compared to multiple day and weeks getting items on a schedule to do. With only one box with Rubrik to setup compared to multiple boxes with Avamar the ability to troubleshoot is easier. Support is better and easier to get too. More …

It's like day and night. Rubrik is super user friendly and very fast. Avamar has a learning curve and it is quite confusing sometimes. There is no more guessing on when backups should occur or when it occurs. It is all in a single glance with Rubrik GUI.

Both offer highly flexible solutions. Rubrik offers simplicity and stability. No solution is a set and forget but Rubrik is as close as you can ask for.
Rubrik has the simplest and the most scalable solution to large scale backups with provable linear performance. Software-defined solutions increase dependencies and older technologies do not use true incremental backups. The ability to stack Rubrik appliances up, at 2 RU each, …
Rubrik was by far the easiest solution to manage and use. This and the fact that it was so extremely simple to configure and use cloud archive is the main reason we went with Rubrik. However, support has to be the biggest surprise. They are very knowledgeable and fast to …
While it doesn't provide all of the platform support as some of the legacy products, Rubrik has taken something typically complex and sometimes painful to manage and simplified it. Most of the products we have used lack in agility and bringing newer features to market.
Rubrik and Cohesity seem to be on-par with their product line. Rubrik seems to be ahead of the curve with the new features and the simple management. For our needs, Rubrik was a great fit.
This software is well suited for companies that want to be very in control of their backups but need a simple tool. It could be convenient for them to just buy their own node, locate it in a different location, and set up the jobs for their machines to backup to the cloud with the specific plugins. However, it would not be convenient for companies looking to have a tool that needs to be secure and compliant, and that need to have different other options for business continuity.
Rubrik is still a relatively new product when compared to other solutions which tackle total data protection. The feature set is quite broad but still needs some refinements. Most of the User Interface is quite straightforward and easy, but some areas are a bit lacking in a description of what the option is used for, or the option is missing. While making the user experience easy, many tunables aren’t present and require a Support Tunnel to be open for a Support person to make a change in the customer’s environment. Seems the first question Support always asks is if you can open a tunnel for them to remote in. Then you’re not able to monitor exactly what they’re doing.
Avamar performs data deduplication on the remote host. This greatly reduces the amount of traffic that each backup requires. This even applies to the virtual environment through change block tracking. Backup times are reduced from hours to minutes.
The management interface makes it easy to configure and maintain data retention periods. Many times certain data must be kept for an extended period of time. There is a specific menu for managing retention periods.
The system is able to recover itself from a hard failure with virtually no loss of backups. There is a checkpoint taken each day that provides a recovery point in the event of a catastrophic failure. Since this is a node based system, the loss of more than one node could require a recovery be performed.
While another grid must be purchased, the replication utility allows all backups to be replicated to another grid at a remote location. This ensures the resilience of the backups in the event there is the loss of the primary data center.
Also works on HCI devices performing image-level backups as in our primary data center environment
There is also now an All-in-One appliance for smaller locations
The client interface has constant JAVA issues and can be slow and chunky. We have often had issues with current versions of JAVA breaking it so it will not even run.
The backup clients are split out for function. Although this makes them light, it also makes it cumbersome to upgrade clients. The naming scheme can also be confusing for the clients.
Automated test restores. I would love to setup automated and random test restores on a regular basis where Rubrik's system will restore a random file or directory to a test SharePoint folder, send a full report, and provide a path to the folder for review and confirmation.
I have been using the product for over five years. This has performed so well that with the current system reaching its End-of-Life with EMC next year, I have proposed replacing it with the latest version of the product. Now that it integrates with Data Domain, the cost has been greatly reduced. Instead of the need to purchase many nodes, one Data Domain can replace them creating a significant cost savings.
The support has been incredible. Any time we have had a question, it has always been answered within 24hrs. Also, the team is always will to hop on a Zoom call to help walk us through the dashboard and troubleshoot any issues we are having. Also, having the peace of mind that our data is protected should anything happen in our system.
The system overall is easy to monitor and see your backup/restore status. The user interface could use updating as it relies on Java and any updates to Java cause the interface to stop working need to be reinstalled
The support is top notch both tech and sales team, the tools are simple to use and yet still is feature rich. Security is top of the list, the product is sold and reliable, easy to configure and intuitive to use.
Rubrik's brik is designed with redundancy in mind, ensuring that if one node experiences issues, others can continue to provide backup and recovery services.
Support is very convincing, always eager to solve issues from the root rather than workaround, don't hesitate to take webex, describe the issues to the core and recommend configuration to avoid further issues. We can ask few questions other than the main issue. They don't hesitate to answer.
Rubrik support has been pretty good. There have been a few issues with new releases we have experienced and are still considering if we want to make the jump to version nine. There are a few things we are concerned about which are giving us pause. That being said, support is working hard to answer our questions.
Easy to follow and very thorough. Trainer was knowledgeable and helpful answering any questions and providing detailed answers where possible. It's also nice to gain another badge :) There is also the Rubrik University online tutorials to refer back to and keep updated with new innovations. I would say the exam was very hard.
From experience the implementation was smooth and easy, like a simple plug and play format but would need coordination from your network team to be able to see the entire IT infrastructure.
Avamar has simplied the back up approach in their VE edition and is much easier to use than Data Protector. Backing up multiple VMs takes minutes instead of hours now. Creating policies, retentions, and schedules, is vastly improved and much easier.
Having all our backups under one umbrella made product management easier, with not need to manage myltip contracts.
The additional analysis of the data after the fact gave insights into our user data, without the need for an addition product, or the impact on live data sets.
We are fine with the 1 year or 3 year support options that Rubrik has had. The support for the on-prem hardware has been great too. We've had them for quite a while (4+ years) and no end of support yet.
