Overall Satisfaction with Box

Our institution uses Box just on an individual and as-needed basis. We pay per user. It is basically used as a second level of cloud backup for critical data, beyond what we store in the cloud with our primary cloud storage provider. We use it as secondary due to its ease of use and reliability.
  • Easy to use.
  • Edit files right within the interface.
  • Sync-ing is trivial.
  • Box is an innovator in the field.
  • Price negotiation/flexibility.
  • Room for better integration with Google.
  • Very poor at understanding my institution's specific needs.
  • In the end, I am paying more with Box than I should. They refused to grant me educational pricing for just the few accounts I needed. Educational pricing was only available if we had accounts for everyone.
  • As a secondary cloud storage provider, they do the job well.
  • The way I was treated had a negative impact on my view of the company.
In the end we selected Google Drive for our primary storage and Box as the backup. OneDrive and Dropbox did not fit our I.T. systems model.

Box is reliable, so we do count on them to provide needed security for critical data.

If Box changed its model we would seriously consider switching to them as our primary cloud storage.
Box's performance both in its apps and in its web interface has been inconsistent. I would give it a higher rating if it were consistent and stayed consistent over a long period of time. The interface is getting older and is in need of a significant update.
I will give credit where credit is due, Box's interface is definitely easy to use. Files and folders can easily be found, and the audit trail is especially helpful on critical documents.
Box is a great cloud storage provider if you want to go with them institution-wide. They could definitely play better with both Microsoft and Google, and I still believe that long-term either Microsoft or Google will buy Box.
The team at Box is not very understanding of small organizations like mine. They would not listen to my needs and instead forced their standard agenda on me, trying to make us fit into the same mold as every other institution. That's never going to work for me.
