Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Umbrella

We deployed it company wide as a measure of WFH, as the trusted DNS source for where ever you are working from. We found that the upstream provider of some people were suspicious and made errors, this allows people to work a bit more freely.

Pros

  • Easy to deploy
  • Lightweight
  • It works

Cons

  • The sso is a bit of a query mess
  • No ROI, only provides that extra layer of security.
The trusted upstream of where ever a user is outside the office is standardized and we can trust it.
It fits well into the security stack and I recommend it as a great layer of protection for outside the office user.
  • Cisco Meraki MX
  • Cisco Umbrella
no network is safe, by providing protection where possible to reduce the threat landscape
gives us way more flexibility for our staff, to be in office or remote
We really didn't have many reliable choices.

Yes

Did Cisco Umbrella live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Would you buy Cisco Umbrella again?

Yes

Anytime you have people that work away from the office this provides a lay of security to connecting from non-standard upstream.

Cisco Hybrid Work

  • Working from anywhere (e.g., coffee shop, airport)
  • Working from an office or other company space
  • Working from home
wanted to protect the endpoints espeically the roaming users where they are lazy and tend not to connect to the vpn but take the easy route of a free wifi as security is never forefront
deployed on all mobile workstations so there is no excuse no to be protected

Resilience and Reliability

secure dns, when on unsecure network wired or wireless the protection of the endpoint is key as people are too easy to just connect to what ever is there.
support the use of the tools and emphize the need to be security firest
does what it says and does it well
  • add to autopilot so that all machines get it on build

Using Cisco Umbrella

425 - every employee as we are still in hybrid with more on the WFH count, so not trusting the individual network we deployed umbrella to everyone
5 - the tool is part of the stack and needs minimal baby sitting
  • great dns
  • trusting cisco todo their part
  • getting the sso working from day one

Evaluating Cisco Umbrella and Competitors

  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
no, we used umbrella before cisco purchased them

Cisco Umbrella Support

The SSO was a bit [difficult] to setup and [we] needed their help.
ProsCons
Quick Resolution
Good followup
Knowledgeable team
Problems get solved
Kept well informed
No escalation required
Immediate help available
Support understands my problem
Support cares about my success
Quick Initial Response
None
didn't know this was available, and would most likely not have bought it
we acquired a company and wanted to move their umbrella portal to ours so that there would be one less sign in, they did it all within 1 day of scheduling the date when we wanted it done

Using Cisco Umbrella

dead simple to deploy, and roll out the agent even with intune so that no matter what happens it gets rolled out and installed to have maximum coverage.
ProsCons
Like to use
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Technical support not required
Well integrated
Consistent
Quick to learn
Feel confident using
Familiar
None
  • has templated ova and download and install
  • can be part of intune and rolled out with each build

Cisco Security

it's one of our cornerstones as without security we are open to malicious actions of bad actors
was the best for the value and we were using them before cisco purchased them when it was open dns. so now we know we are on the right track
when they bought open dns we knew we were on the right track for like minded thinking
better integration for sso
both easier to break in and detect and avoid, it works both sides of the coin
yes, there is a bit more head room for utilization but worth it
