Overall Satisfaction with SAP Commerce Cloud (formerly SAP Hybris)
Currently using SAP Commerce Cloud as our primary eCommerce platform and CMS. It supports the majority of commerce outside of the subscription business and is the primary interface for the Digital Marketing Operations team. On the administrative side, the platform enables content management via a structured system of templates and catalog management via manual data entry.
- The platform is very business-agnostic in that it can be highly customized with a massive scope of features and parameters.
- SAP is generally well regarded and Hybris is enterprise-grade, making it easier to pitch to executives with traditional eCommerce background.
- The entire software design is extremely over-complicated, with 5-10 steps for actions that should be one step. This has an enormous cost to teams who interact with and support the platform and limits practical use cases for the business.
- The flexibility of the platform is completely dependent on application developers to customize it for the business. The platform cannot be customized by marketers or non-devs. This creates a huge initial and ongoing tech dependency to set-up and support the platform.
- Our business went through 3 major initiatives to migrate our legacy platform and data to Hybris over the course of several years with multiple tech leadership and dev teams. All 3 of these initiatives failed to launch, largely due to the complexity of the platforms and massively associated tech burdon. A 4th re-platforming succeeded in launching an MVP version with support from expensive consulting firms and to the tune of millions of dollars.
- Due to the inflexibility of the content management features, marketing teams are severely limited and have had to seek 3rd-party software to layer on top of Hybris to deliver modern customer experiences.
Hybris is a massive enterprise-grade system that is built for scale. If your business has <1000 SKUs in the catalog and lacks a large full-stack +java e-commerce dev team, stick to a lighter, more agile solution.
