ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

Bronto

We've used Bronto for the past year or so with a couple of our larger clients. It's super easy to work with and offers good strategies to get the most out of our email marketing campaigns. It has automated responders that help with e-newsletters and campaign sign-ups, which streamlines our workload and saves us the headache of tracking all this stuff ourselves. This software is ideal for large companies with huge returns.

Pros

  • The automation interface is fairly intuitive to work through and offers powerful, flexible features.
  • For the price and features it offers, it's the best value of any automation service that exists today.
  • It has a TON of options for the advanced user to tinker and test with.
Nicholas De Salvo profile photo
  • It provides a solid way of sending a lot of emails to a lot of different people across a lot of different account types (i.e. gmail or outlook)
  • The analytics section is comprehensive and provides a clear picture of your customer's behaviors
  • Segmenting is an easy and simple task

Cons

  • Campaign sending has a few too many steps to go through, would love to see more on one page
  • More organizational tools for sent, drafts, and different list emails other than just one level tagging would be great
  • Visual email scheduling for newsletters on a calendar would be a huge improvement to the list style. Drag and drop to reschedule emails would be a godsend!

  • The analytics section, while already very comprehensive, should add in even more ways to compare email campaigns to one another
  • The email builder is adequate but can be a bit cumbersome when creating more advanced emails
  • Improving the automation of emails is another way in which Bronto could improve

Usability is great. Very intuitive drag-and-drip metaphor for building automations. And the UI is very user-centric. It constantly prompts you with suggestions and next steps such that you hardly have to refer to the (excellent) documentation.

They used to be good, but they've evolved into a monolithic bureaucratic nightmare after the Netsuite / Oracle acquisition. Can't talk to anyone that actually knows the system and support tickets seem to go days or weeks without responses and resolution.

Alternatives Considered

Backend user experience is much more streamlined and robust than AWeber. AWeber also triggers weird spam wall blocks occasionally when integrating with other system’s automated forms. MailChimp simply doesn’t have the features I need.

Bronto is not cheap, but it's valuable if you use it correctly. MailChimp has a better message editor and better third party apps, and is cheaper than Bronto and it more honest and transparent in pricing (very important for a partner!). Bronto has better segmentation tools and better workflow creation and management (for Drips) but it's hard to trust them. We are probably moving to Mail Chimp this year. Listrak is very similar to Bronto at a much lower price point. We have found the Bronto UI and Mail Chimp UI better, cleaner and more intuitive than Listrak - which cuts down on mistakes and headaches for our team - but Listrak has gotten better over the last 2 years and we have strongly considered them and are looking again at them this year.

Return on Investment

  • It's overall price point is a positive attribute, but the phrase "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here.
  • The negative impact comes with having to answer "I'm not sure I'm able to get that data" when posed with a question from clients or one's own leadership group.

  • Significant ROI
  • Solid lift in open rates compared to previous efforts with other platforms.
  • Solid click-through rates through segmentation and drip campaigns.
