Zoom is way better in video conferencing, desktop sharing and stability. Also having the ability to create rooms, so you can divide your team during the meeting to work on several projects is great! Also for me to be able to draw in order to explain or highlight on desktop …

Both Amazon Chime and Zoom are unified communication solutions that offer audio and video conferencing, business calling, and other collaboration features like team messaging and screen sharing. Zoom and Amazon Chime are both available on most major platforms, including iOS, Android, Web, and Mac. On TrustRadius, both products are in the web and video conferencing software category.

Features

Both Amazon Chime and Zoom provide standard online communication features like video and audio conferencing, online meeting recording, business phone calling, screen sharing, personalized meeting links, and the ability to see meeting participants. However, each platform has a few unique features as well.

Amazon Chime allows users to join meetings by using Alexa and start meetings directly from Slack. Users can also utilize chatbots within Amazon Chime chat rooms and can select a ‘running late’ option that notifies other meeting attendees. All Amazon Chime meetings are also fully encrypted with AES 256-bit standards, which protect audio and video calls, chat messages, and shared files from data breaches.

Zoom is widely regarded as one of the most user-friendly video conferencing platforms, which can help increase adoption of the platform across your team or business. Zoom also offers features like the ability to set up virtual backgrounds, the ability to mute yourself or turn off your video feed, a virtual ‘hand-raising’ feature, and advanced collaboration features like a whiteboard and breakout rooms for online meetings.

Limitations

While Amazon Chime and Zoom are true alternatives and serve the same use cases, each platform has a few limitations to be aware of.

For example, Amazon Chime’s free plan doesn’t allow users to host group meetings, users can only make one-on-one video or voice calls. In contrast, Zoom’s free plan provides users with a much wider array of features, including the ability to host group meetings. However, Zoom’s free plan limits meetings with more than two participants to 40 minutes.

Amazon’s Chime’s paid plan also limits group meetings to 250 participants, while Zoom’s paid plans accommodate up to 1,000 meeting participants. Only 16 users can show their video feeds at one time with Amazon Chime, while Zoom allows up to 49 users to show their video feeds simultaneously.

Two advantages Amazon Chime has over Zoom is that it’s built on top of Amazon’s AWS service and has more robust communication data encryption. Zoom, on the other hand, has faced scrutiny for its lack of strong security measures and data breaches.

Pricing

Both products have a free plan, but after that Zoom offers three different plan tiers while Amazon has one paid plan. Zoom’s pricing structure is based on how many meeting hosts are using its services per month, while Amazon’s pricing depends on which features users are actively using per day.

Amazon Chime’s free plan normally doesn’t allow users to host group meetings. However, due to the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon has made Pro plan features free for new users between March 4th, 2020 and September 30th, 2020. Typically, the group meeting costs $3 per user per day, up to $15 per user per month.

Zoom free plan provides users with access to more features than Amazon Chime’s free plan usually does. These include video and web conferencing, breakout rooms, screen sharing, meeting waiting room, and the ability to host meetings with up to 1,000 participants. Zoom’s highest-priced plan costs $19.99 per meeting host per month.

Amazon AWS
Amazon Chime is well suited for online video and audio meetings, IMs, and conducting training sessions using a whiteboard. It can be integrated well with Google Calendar and Microsoft outlook. With Amazon Chime mobile app you can attend meetings on the go as well. Meetings can be locked so that only legitimate participants can join the meeting. Amazon Chime is less suited in case you want meeting transcripts as well for your meetings. Given that Amazon Chime is not used by a larger audience so your client or customer may face some difficulties in join the meeting or accessing some of the features of the Chime.

I think Zoom runs circles around Teams! I just wish starting meetings was easier - anyone with a link should be able to start the meeting the way you can in Teams. It would also be great to be able to see participants when you are sharing your screen.

Pros
Amazon AWS
  • Chat tools, video calls, on spot meeting invite[s] easy to create and use.
  • Ability to record any meeting and automatically downloads the meeting recording after ending the meeting.
  • UI is clean and easy to navigate around Amazon Chime.
  • Ability to invite outside guests easily using Amazon Chime without any issues.

Zoom
  • I love how easy it is to set the focus on the presenter. It is annoying when people don't spotlight themselves as a presenter, so you get to see the whole gallery of attendees in smaller, two-inch windows.
  • I like the capability of having break-out rooms. Even though I don't use them very often, it is nice to have them available if the right situation presents itself for smaller group chats.
  • The recording quality is better than I have experienced with other products (Microsoft Teams, WebEx, etc.), and the fact that it is already an MP4, so I don't have to convert it for publishing on our intranet is huge to me.

Cons
Amazon AWS
  • More simplified dial-in numbers. The PIN for our conference line is long and easy to mistype.
  • You do not have to download the Chime app in order to join a conference, but if you want to do anything beyond join (schedule a conference, participate in a group chat, control participants), you have to have the app downloaded and installed. The app that you have to download in order to launch a conference is a memory hog, and slows down a computer's boot up time.
  • The add-in for Microsoft Outlook is particularly clunky. It helps you add scheduled conference calls/video conferences to your Outlook calendar, but it can cause Outlook to crash, and creates a really slow open time for Outlook. If you can avoid downloading the Outlook Add-In, I would.
  • No built-in screen sharing capabilities.

Zoom
  • Sharing zoom complete information is not visible on the screen, and also a bit is confusing minimizing and maximizing.
  • Every time someone enters the chat, a chat box appears on my screen, and some features are missing from this version.
  • Automatic conference connection based on a schedule isn't an option, and neither is enhanced security measures.

We're sticking with Zoom for the foreseeable future--given its compelling feature set, ease of use, and advanced technology, there's just no other competition to be excited about. Plus it's a Gartner-recognized industry leader, so it's a rather easy choice.

Zoom is made for the non tech office. It has features that can be made to do what you need to run things on a day to day basis. Immediately we we able to get meetings going with remote employees. The ability to be able to add smartphone connected people was a big plus. Zoom met our needs at the time.

Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

They were very supportive in answering all of our questions when we had problems. Their in-person calls but their support site also had a full set of information that can answer a good portion of your questions before you have to pick up the phone. But when you, you will get good service.

As I've written before, Zoom makes us feel like we matter and that we're a client rather than a customer. They want us to succeed and they put in the time to make sure that we do. I feel like they're more of a business partner rather than simply a vendor or supplier. They spent a lot of time onboarding with us, giving us demos, helping us get set up, and then giving us follow-up to be sure it's going well.

If you receive any pushback from higher ups, point to any of the various positive reviews like this one. Or show Zoom's excellent Gartner report, or articles describing Zoom's partnership with Sequoia capital. It's not difficult to show how Zoom is a trustworthy industry leader with best-in-class technology.

Better than Skype for Business in terms of loading the application onto your device. Skype had crashing issues always and those are comparatively low when using Amazon Chime. Amazon chime is fast and easy to work with while collaborating and setting up meetings. The audio and video quality are better than Skype for Business.

Zoom cannot be beaten for ubiquity - 100% of my clients and prospective clients are already familiar with Zoom. This is the #1 reason why I use Zoom. Additionally, Zoom integrates with AcuityScheduling, saving me a lot of time in creating meetings and adding them to the calendar. Zoom is disappointing in terms of video quality, interactivity features, and privacy. In cases where I need to use the recording of webinars for digital products, I will always use Crowdcast, and in cases where privacy is essential, I will use JitsiMeet.

The billing and price model is really fair for so many functions that they offer, our remote work requires each of the features that Zoom offers, so accepting payment for a tool like this is the least we can do. I like that billing arrives on time and that they offer opportunities and payment times.

Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.

  • It enables me to send and receive messages from my team members during video calls, handling online presentations.
  • With the ability to quickly stop, mute, and even receive notifications when someone enters or exits the meeting room, I'm never obligated to show up while making a call.
  • It is possible to record online meetings for future reference and more effective customer service. As we dealt with a lockdown, Zoom helped our business run smoothly.
