Mattermost

Mattermost is well suited for teams and groups that want to collaborate together and need a simple intuitive solution to communicate together. As it's very similar to Slack, it suits the same needs in my opinion. However, for people who prefer a solution that integrates various features, it lacks features other than instant messaging. That being said, I actually think it's a good thing.

  • HipChat is the first enterprise team chat application, hence it invented the idea of itself.
  • Cross-platform support and hence runs on most of the computing devices
  • Efficient search
  • Completely free for smaller teams

  • We collaborate as a team with great efficiency and ease, we solve any problem or need together through the Mattermost chat.
  • Communication is made regardless of the distance where my colleagues are, it is very fast and does not slow down the progress of our work.

Cons

HipChat (discontinued)

  • Mobile app is not very responsive on iOS. Sometimes connection to Hipchat servers is taking too long even on good networks.
  • Both mobile and desktop versions have no alphabetical or recent sorting for groups and chat rooms.
  • Video and audio calls are pretty useless, they're slow and not always work.
  • The whole user interface is simple but very outdated - apparently Atlassian didn't focus too much on Hipchat even though they tried in the last 2 years.

  • Some of the features in paid plans could be free, however, they have much offered in free plan (self-hosted)
  • The Desktop App we use on windows has some bugs, like when Mattermost is down and comes back up, the app needs restart

Mattermost works perfectly within our company as a way to communicate seamlessly. I have had no issues with the product and continue to use it often while on and off site. The mobile app allows me to continue to communicate with my team even when I don't have my laptop with me.

The app itself had a pleasant if not generic interface. As a user experience expert and engineer I can say the interface is fairly intuitive if not bland. It does what you expect it to do and it's available on iOS and Android devices. If I recall it was generally pretty light weight in terms of installation size.

It's an extremely easy to use software, and I would recommend it to every company that is growing. I think they could improve their notification system, as it gets a little spammy sometimes and important notifications get lost. Also needs to improve the number of private chats that you are allowed to create.

HipChat support is good . Responds in timely manner when ever we have raised the request via email , phone and gives us continue update on the request .Though most of the questions are answered by HipChat FAQs , but they can still improve it and add more to the knowledge base .

We have not had to contact support for Mattermost ever. All that we have needed has been available in the documentation or website. One of our DevOps team members set it up in a couple of hours. The whole team was using Mattermost that same day. No support needed.

We tried a lot of chat clients before choosing HipChat. The Skype for Business UI on the Mac side was 5 years old and terrible. Mac users hated the app including our CTO. Cisco Jabber was expensive to license and maintain; Skype was open to the public which took time away due to users dealing with spam and could allow viruses and malware. HipChat being a closed product, centrally managed and available to try without an upfront investment was perfect for our environment. All our Agile teams have their own room, chat and can communicate with others quickly and easily.

Mattermost

Mattermost is possibly the opportunities of cloud against any of the workplace communication software, especially for developers. DevOps integrations make it easier for users to use it with multiple tools like Github, Zendesk, and Zoom. The peer community support is well enough to help you if you face any issues while running the open-source software in production.

Actually I never shared of HipChat using with more than 25 persons in team simultaneously, but I believe it can be scaled for much largest collaboration teams. At least it works flawlessly for us, with transparent integration with Jira, and I am not see any reasons for some troubles for work at big scale.

  • HipChat has increased the effiency with which I am able to communicate with my coworkers, particularly those who work out of other offices. Having a light, portable messaging solution has been beneficial for checking in on small things without the need to send emails or schedule phone calls.

  • It has reduced ticket quantity by a vast percentage, which has reduced costs due to less call being placed to the help desk
  • It has reduced email flow as well, which requires less management by Mail Administrators
  • It has made software developers within the organization very happy, as most of them are now ambassadors for Mattermost
