LogMeIn Rescue

LogMeIn Rescue works great when providing technical support to end-users. We are a software consulting company that supports many end-users who are not always tech-savvy. I have used other remote access tools in the past which were cumbersome or complicated to get non-tech users to connect. LogMeIn Rescue works every time and is simple and easy to use. When installing updates on remote computers, it can sometimes take several hours and you often need to restart the computer. The unattended access feature works great in allowing the end user to not need to be present at their desk while we do our work.

VNC Connect

I would not hesitate to recommend VNC Connect for most remote access and control applications. I would have slight reservations if the application could potentially involve large numbers of remote devices due to the billing model.

Pros

LogMeIn Rescue

  • Unattended Remote Access.
  • Quickly get a new user/computer to connect. We typically use the 6 digit code method and direct users to logmein123.com.
  • Gather statistics on a remote computer such as services installed and running, disk space, and other metrics.

  • Encryption (Paid version)

  • Reliability
  • Visually nice and unobstructed simple GUI

Cons

LogMeIn Rescue

  • Better support for servers with unattended access. The unattended access works well, but occasionally will get disabled or uninstalled on servers and needs to be reconfigured.
Matt Van Winkle profile photo

VNC Connect

  • Depending on the strength of the network, VNC does have an issue that it may run slow.
  • Some users have had concerns about security on VNC. If one end user has a virus, then it could cause a transfer, but our district has put in to place additional security procedures to prevent this issue.
  • Clipboard transfers don't always translate properly. It is better to transfer a file instead of copying and pasting between computers while using VNC.

This is a solid product with the idea of getting a technician the data and interface in order to resolve issues for all types of computer support needs and levels via simple tools in a consistent manner. Would recommend this product to anyone looking to provide solutions to Help Desk access concerns and much more

Usability

Usability would be a 10/10 if unattended access/session restarts always reconnected properly. Also, the session disconnects frequently on some users. All in all, it's great.

The training is very informative, quick and to the point. All of the details one would need are present so the user doesn't have to go searching for additional information just to use the application. The layout of the training was also neat and concise, some of the other training sessions for other companies I've done in the past were confusing and not well thought out, this one is much more superior

Alternatives Considered

LogMeIn Rescue

We have used Team Viewer, GoToMyPC, Join.me, Chrome Remote Desktop, RealVNC, Windows Remote Desktop and the regular LogMeIn. For end-user support, LogMeIn Rescue has worked better than any of them. Several of these are not good when users do not already have the client software running on their computer. Others are hard to configure/setup and others only work on specific platforms (i.e. Windows but not Macs). LogMeIn Rescue has worked well for us on Windows and Mac computers and has always been found by our clients to be easy to use.

VNC Connect

RealVNC is by far the lightest weight solution, if not the most basic for remotely connecting to a computer. Other products are much nicer in that they allow for encrypted access over the internet though and that's where RealVNC falls short.

Return on Investment

LogMeIn Rescue

  • Our customers love the added level of service that using LogMeIn Rescue provides.

VNC Connect

  • RealVNC has increased employee efficiency by allowing a Field Service rep to remote into a machine without having the user log off first.
  • RealVNC does offer outstanding customer service and technical support for it's products.
  • From our studies, RealVNC is much cheaper than most of it's competition. This is always a concern when bringing in new tools.
