What is Recurly?

Recurly is a subscription billing platform and manages customer communications via email, business performance monitoring, and account changes. A merchant bank account is required to work with Recurly. A payment gateway is part of the product but it integrates with other gateways, such as PayPal, to give shoppers a more comprehensive suite of payment options.

  • card declines: this is a big negative, as it affects the potential customer and event the journey of existing customer, who tries to renew
  • coupons were positive, as we could decommission voucherify and use Recurly for the coupons instead
  • needed to move analytics to Amplitude, due to less options

We use Recurly to manage our paid subscription business. Recurly's built-in reporting is a game-changer, giving us instant metrics to measure results and identify areas in need of attention.

Pros

  • The ease of running reports with clear charts and graphs makes it easy to spot trends.
  • The ability to add new products or subscription packages can be created & made live in minutes.
  • Exporting customer lists and subscribers can be done in seconds.

Cons

  • The Recurly system logs you out in minutes if it sits unused, which leads to users having to constantly log-in.
  • Recurly does not allow for Google Analytic tracking all of the way through the checkout process.

Return on Investment

  • Since beginning with Recurly, our paid subscription counts have improved 7%. This is largely driven by the ability within Recurly to test various promotions and subscription pricing.
  • The ability to have transparency in our monthly recurring revenue numbers have allowed us to accurately manage and forecast our subscription goals.

We use Recurly to manage our paid membership programs. It does a great job of handling the various billing cycles (monthly quarterly annually) across our two membership programs.

Pros

  • The API allows for custom integrations
  • The reporting suite covers a lot of questions asked by our business
  • Web portal is designed well

Cons

  • Its difficult to pull data back into our data warehouse for further analysis

  • The API has allowed us to build a "My Account" portal for our members which allows them to view and manage their subscriptions.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Recurly has been used by me for a long time to manage subscriptions and the whole billing lifecycle, and it also helps me collect payments quickly, handle recurring billing, and even run complex pricing plans.

Pros

  • the support team is quick, friendly and always gives clear answers with detailed solutions
  • it handles even complicated billing setups smoothly, like upgrades, downgrades or failed payments
  • i love how customizable it is, from coupons to paywalls and integrations with other tools

Cons

  • the instructions for implementation leave out too many steps
  • the features of this tool has a learning curve

Return on Investment

  • it saves countless hours with automation and reporting, so I can focus on customers instead of admin work
  • i get clear visibility into revenue analytics like MRR, retention and cohorts, which helps me make better decisions
  • it scales with us, so I don’t have to worry about outgrowing it
