Intercom

Intercom is great for companies that have close relationships with customers or who want to have close relationships with customers. It's the ultimate tool for being able to communicate with customers in a personalized way, provide them with real-time answers, as well as allow them to help themselves with knowledge base tools and automated messaging.

Pros

ActiveCampaign

  • Simple, easy, and fast setup for lists. You can set up a new list in just seconds. And also, they allow you to have an unlimited number of lists and tags that keep things organized.
  • Powerful automations and a clean interface to build them. ActiveCampaign is a powerful tool, allowing you to segment users and send them congruent messaging.
  • Great deliverability. Email marketing is only as useful as the number of emails that get received. If your emails don't send or wind up in spam or junk or promotions folders, that will severely inhibit your email marketing efforts.

Intercom

  • Intercom splits their chat really well. The chats are able to be split between internal notes and actual sent messages.
  • Tagging works really well in Intercom. You can tag each user and can also tag users in messages/internal notes so they can directly see messages intended for them.
  • Easy documentation management. You are able to find the help docs you need easily even during a chat message.

Cons

ActiveCampaign

  • Campaign sending has a few too many steps to go through, would love to see more on one page
  • More organizational tools for sent, drafts, and different list emails other than just one level tagging would be great
  • Visual email scheduling for newsletters on a calendar would be a huge improvement to the list style. Drag and drop to reschedule emails would be a godsend!

Intercom

  • I think analytics is probably the weakest area of the platform. Being heavily numbers driven - I am not able to produce advanced reports in Intercom and often resort to exporting the data manually. I would stress a big improvement would be to improve the conditional logic within the analytics dashboard. For instance - a user is limited within filters and cannot nominate multiple variables for instance - User tag is "X" OR "Y" - in the current set up this would require two filters not one so adding this advanced logic would be helpful
  • I think the new UI/UX was a step backwards and prefer the old look and feel
  • Can get pricey as your contact volume increases
  • Links to 3rd party CRMs like/Pipedrive/Freshsales so that if opportunities were engaged with sales - this would either show a notification to agents to advise them of the existing relationship or would automatically assign the sales rep to engage in further conversation. I have now seen releases for Salesforce and Hubspot - but i think the feature set here could be expanded a little more
  • Integration with Linkedin API to help personalization of conversation and serve recommendations
  • The standard operator bot needs to help users make it "cooler" - without modification it simply asks for contact details and therefore has a transactional feel with the customer

I've tried over half a dozen email autoresponders and ActiveCampaign is by far my favorite. The ability to send emails is the backbone of my business. The "cheap" email marketing tools designed for the mass market are not powerful or intuitive to set up and also don't have the best deliverability. And the "expensive" ones are usually super confusing to use.

It's currently a perfect fit for our needs, and we are customer-focused and small. When we grow, we may need to re-evaluate, but our current team finds it easy. Reviewing conversations is simple and allows for great training. The canned replies make service fast and easy. Smart suggestions remove the need to re-write technical walkthroughs and explanations for our FAQ

It's super easy and fast to set up automations and email lists. In under five minutes, you can be mailing your list. I'm not a fan of complexity, and I'm also not a fan of being hamstrung by weak tools, so I really like using ActiveCampaign. It's the perfect blend of simplicity and power.

Intercom has really done a great job creating a focused product that provides huge value and is super easy to use. Our entire business group and a few engineering members are using it with no training whatsoever which is super rare for any platform.

Reliability and Availability

I've never had ActiveCampaign down for maintenance. I'm sure they update things, but they always seem to manage to stay live. Also, I've had very few errors, if any. None come to mind. This might be to due to the fact I focus on building things as simply as possible, but I also believe it's due to the quality of the software.

ActiveCampaign works seamlessly with the other tools I use. It integrates directly with most. And if no direct integration is available, there is almost always one you can make using Zapier. I've yet to run into a technical error that prevented me from doing something I wanted to be able to do.

Support

I have only had to reach out to ActiveCampaign support a couple of times, and every time they have helped me out quickly and efficiently. They get back to you pretty quickly and usually have the solution figured out within just a couple of message exchanges. Please keep in mind I use the simple features of ActiveCampaign, so if there's a complication solution you're looking for help with, your experience with support might be a little different.

Implementation

If your email marketing strategy is clunky and confusing then it doesn't matter what tool you use or need to set up. It will take time to set it up. However, if you favor simple and effective email marketing strategies then you'll find that setting up ActiveCampaign is a breeze. And the results you'll get with it will far outweigh the time it takes to set it up.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is closest in proximity to Infusionsoft but falls short of in most every area except price. It is not in the same ballpark as Pardot, Marketo and HubSpot. To be fair, however, one also has to pay a great deal more for those solutions.

Intercom

Intercom is the best chat engagements software I've come across. I haven't evaluated many nor searched the market a lot. But I talk to companies every day and often recommend Intercom if they aren't already using it. Some companies merit a ticket tracking system and others prefer a human chat element, it depends on the business model. From my understanding and market perception, Intercom is a clear leader in support chat applications

I've tried several of the email services available today. ActiveCampaign makes it easy and fast to get set up. And they have some of the best email deliverability available today as well. That's really important when it comes to email marketing, because winding up in spam or promotion folders makes your email marketing efforts and uphill battle.

Return on Investment

ActiveCampaign

  • It's overall price point is a positive attribute, but the phrase "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here.
  • The negative impact comes with having to answer "I'm not sure I'm able to get that data" when posed with a question from clients or one's own leadership group.

Intercom

  • It's allowed us to quickly offer a chat solution and increase checkout conversions on our e-commerce page.
  • Their pricing structure is ideal, where they don't charge by the seat. They instead charge by the number of chats. This is advantageous since it allows multiple members of our team to chat and our price only increases if our chats increase - not staffing.
