Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

GoToMeeting

This software is best suited for those that engage primarily with colleagues and clients via the web for demonstrations and teleconferencing where visuals are needed. If teleconferencing is the only need, there are more affordable alternatives and some are even free. Questions to ask would be 1. Am I going to be sharing my screen/desktop with others? 2. What countries will I need to interact with? 3. What level of moderator controls do I need?

Pros

  • The one thing Amazon Chime has going for it is it is backed by its top tier web services platform. Amazon Chime may not have the market share yet, but it has the visibility and commitment from its development teams to be a mainstay in conferencing for the foreseeable future.
  • Amazon Chime offered a very easy to use interface that is friendly not only through the desktop application but the web and mobile interfaces.
  • Amazon Chime offers a variety of ways to allow first-time users to join meetings. Either through standard invites and meeting ID's etc. It is easy to get new people, customers or first time/one time users involved, collaborating and contributing.

  • GoToMeeting helps conduct meetings for remote participants to join in the presentation from their own office.
  • GoToMeeting records presentations visual and audio portions for later reference for those unable to attend.
  • GoToMeeting is fairly intuitive, so users/participants who have never accessed the software are typically able to figure out how to access the meeting without any instructions or prep work.

Cons

  • Amazon Chime can be invasive as it pops up on your computer one minute or so before your meeting time.
  • Screen sharing - this isn't a real con as the screen sharing is great, it's at times just really small and hard to view when there are a handful of people on the call.
  • Log in - this can sometimes be a challenge but [it's] not too bad.

  • SSO (Single-Sign-On) is not easy to set up.
  • Lacking integration with SSO or G-Suite to auto-provision users.

It is not my decision to make in our company, but I am pretty sure we will continue using this tool as it has proved its value for us and does help a lot in terms of inner and outer meetings that we are having plenty of

GTM is simple to set up and use. Rarely do our clients have issues joining a meeting.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Chime WILL become an industry leader. Amazon is still behind WebEx and is gaining ground on Microsoft. The advantage Microsoft will have is the ability to embed in organizations through Office, and have that advantage over WebEx as well. We selected Amazon Chime as another platform because it aided in our support from the AWS Web Services Support Team.

We have had chats with Zoom and have a few employees using Zoom to demo. Really we have found they are about even in quality and features. Both have good chrome extensions and are easy to use. I personally have used both Zoom and GoToMeeting while meeting with software vendors while shopping for new tools and really both are easy to use and quick to get into meetings.

Return on Investment

  • Amazon Chime has a positive impact on our organization with respect to reaching out and getting supported by AWS staff and Web services technical personnel.
  • Amazon Chime currently does not cost us anything as our organization is a recipient of meeting requests more so then initiators. Given this, it is nice to be able to have access to a product as no cost.
  • One negative aspect to Amazon Chime, but it is not Amazon's fault is that our organization has so many options to conference as it is. Amazon Chime just dilutes the pool. Our organization is a believer in centralized IT and centralized solutions. Having another conferencing solution makes it difficult.

  • Initially, it helped us achieve our learning objectives. But when the exporting attendance data and tracking polling questions functionality started to break, it was difficult to get the support. This platform no longer meets our needs as well.
