OutSystems
Chose OutSystems
Kony seemed to have most everything that OutSystems has. However, getting up and running was much easier and the development process was much more efficient. Also, the ability to move between environments was easier. Overall, OutSystems was a better product.
Chose OutSystems

Most complete solution. Beyond the super fast ability to create high-quality web and native mobile apps, the built-in analytics have proven to almost eliminate the need for added overhead of analytics tags.

I've been following OutSystems for 3 years and the pace of innovation …

Chose OutSystems
We were looking for a low-code platform, and none of the others covered the entire SDLC so thoroughly and so well.
Chose OutSystems
The key reason we used Outsystems is that the Kony Asia Pacific team was almost dismissed and/or the lack of business and technical support. Also, they do not have a low code concept compared to Outsystems. Kony pricing is more expensive than Outsystems. Therefore, we decided …

Microsoft Power Apps and OutSystems both were very robust, but felt overwhelming compared to Quickbase.

OutSystems
Well suited for internal exposure of business processes (invoicing, API layer to other systems, customer maintenance etc), whether a UI is required or not. Not so well suited for full fledged web design. An OutSystems application must serve one particular business need, if gets too much functionalities and responsibilities it tends to get chaotic and complex.

Quickbase
I no longer think that Quickbase is the way of the future. They do not fix major bugs in a timely manner, and are releasing basic functionality behind a paywall. I believe that Enterprise Level Tier should be given certain things, like SLAs on Support and up-time. However, as a low-code no-code platform the majority of the accounts, "builders", and users are not going to be able to justify the cost of an Enterprise Tier Plan, and won't be able to use the features that Quickbase continues to advertise.

  • Cross-platform mobile development - we used this for developing the app on a native platform (which could be iOS, Android). Kony offers tools that are useful because they decrease costs and increase the speed at which apps are developed. In addition, cross-platform mobile development tools are generally quite simple to use as they are based off of the common languages for scripting, including CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. It has become easy to find resources with the skill set especially because this is based out of common languages.
  • In Kony mobility platform Visualizer makes app development quick and easy. Tons of documentation online.
  • Used Kony to develop an amazing app that serves our customers well. WYSIWYG interface is great for building interfaces quickly. Build and test quickly for many different targets.

Cons
OutSystems
  • Price – The licensing model of OutSystems is very expensive and not suitable for small scale developments. This is offset by the time to develop and stability for larger scale developments
  • Flexibility on PaaS version – The PaaS hosted version of OutSystems limits your flexibility to access the front end and backend database systems which can significantly restrict your options on high data volume developments or where anything requiring slightly out of the ordinary access is required
  • Same price for PaaS and self-hosted system. Licensing model dictates that you pay the same price even when you host the system on your own hardware which effectively means you pay more to manage the infrastructure yourself

  • I'd like to see a link on email notices that take you directly into said notice. On an app that only has 1 or 2 email notices firing, there's no issue. However, we have some tools that are so complex that they have about 20 email notices firing at any given time based on the action users take. In this case, if we have to go in to modify a notice, we have to guess or scroll down the long list of notices to see which one we need to customize. It would be great if Quickbase had the URL of said notice somewhere at the footer of that notice so when Administrators click on it, it takes them into the exact notice they need to update.
  • When filling out or reviewing a lengthy form, I'd like to see the Save & close button, as well as a Save & next option at the bottom of the form rather than having to scroll back up to the top of those forms just to click on those choices.

  • Manuals or instructions need to be streamlined with its high pricing.
  • It's a very intricate platform. It only performs moderately while the app is currently in operation.

We are very happy with OutSystems and our developers deliver good work. OutSystems lets us build new software on a regulare (2 weekly) basis, which is highly flexible and adjustable. Even without very much experience, our developers manage to build usefull software, which is working a lot better than our previous (legacy) software.

For our use-case of QuickBase, there really aren't any other products out there that can offer us the same out-of-the-box solutions they provide to us. We're also so integrated with it in our daily processes that to move away from it abruptly would cause mass chaos, so it's going to be renewed for at least the next several years.

Usability
OutSystems
OutSystems has a feature in which we can develop a functionality in a application and can use that functionality in another application without developing it again. That is main plus point for the development team so they can work with different functionalities rather focusing on the same thing again and again. if we want to make any change on the user side then we can make it live with just the deployment using the service center.

Quick Base has done everything we have asked it to do and then some. Our original goal was to have one system for CRM that encompassed both the sales process and the customer management. We have gone w-a-y beyond that with analytics, project management, system bug logging, and historical effort reporting.

Some of our tables that hold over a million records are starting to perform poorly, with some summaries taking over 20 seconds to load. This may be an indication that it is best to archive old data when reaching large volumes like this.

Support Rating
OutSystems
The tech support is very reachable. Usually by [email] from but also by phone if needed. We had some difficulties at the start with understanding "what our machine was doing" under high performance load. After some good sessions understanding our needs they delivered good solutions for our problems we had in the beginning.

If you utilize the community, the support is amazing. Unfortunately, I find their actual support system a bit underwhelming. They don't seem to have a great process for interacting directly with an issue and often sweep significant issues under the rug by categorizing them as "Enhancement" ideas or legacy items.

In a large company, patiently and consistently work the behind the scenes politics with business and IT partners across the firm.
This is transformational - you will need a solid set of key business partners to lock arms together to move forward.

I was not directly involved with the initial account implementation, only a bystander. For the app I directly implemented for my department only, I wish I had know to create an app diagram first. I don't remember if that was suggested. I think that would be a great help tip tool when a new app is created, to have a page with a check list of what is needed or how to get started. If you are a regular app builder, then you can bypass it or have the ability to turn it off in the app settings.

I tried to use WordPress with some success. Also looked at Joomla. But when I saw OutSystems I knew I had been wasting my time there. It takes you longer to get going with OutSystems - but even I as a novice realized immediately that Outsystems is simply in another league. Outsystems is powerful. (Can you compare WordPress and Joomla to Outsystems - I don't think so).

Well, there's a plethora of low-code tools out on the marketplace and, you know, there's a reason that we've decided to partner with QuickBase because it has all the right balance of the ability to integrate with the ability for a citizen developer to create apps successfully. So if you look at something like Zo Ho's low-code offering, for example, yes, there are some similarities there, but they're really dependent on all of their other licensed products to get you where you want to be, where with QuickBase you have the ability to truly create something custom.

We evaluated variety of platforms like Xamarin, Sencha, PhoneGap. When we were initially evaluating Xamarin, it was not Microsoft and so the releases and features were not very streamlined. Also licensing was a issue with that. Sencha was a very attractive cross mobile platform but was expensive. Just for handful of developers price was high. Ours is big enterprise so licensing costs became huge. PhoneGap is based out of open source Apache Cordova project and is completely free to use, which goes some way to explain its popularity. The enterprise version boasts marketing features via Adobe’s Marketing Cloud, so when it launches it will probably be monetized. Comparing with the features platform has to offer and the price tag attached to it, we narrowed down to using Kony.

OutSystems
  • The ease of use of the OutSystems development process has been the biggest ROI for us. We have developed our Framework product and maintained/enhanced it with only 4 workers.
  • OutSystems has enhanced their product very significantly over the last 4 years. They have gone from a simple to use tool to a very simple to use sophisticated tool that covers the standard mainframe-based computing apps and the apps used on handheld mobile devices all using the same basic set of development tools.

  • ROI is HUGE. Our company saved over 3.5 million in one year alone based on developments that year in Quickbase that saved time for many teams
  • Less user error - implementing automations and standardized workflows has led to less user error as was previously seen by maintaining spreadsheets or Smartsheets

  • Positive on ROI. I'm constantly utilizing Kony since it's a robust tool capable of publishing.
  • It also shares prototype creations of apps in a highly intuitive and customizable environment. It provides a preview of apps in real-time. Collaboration is seamless. Important functionality includes smartphone features (without any written code involved) and accessibility to a browser, maps, and SMS.
  • Trying to understand the user manual can be challenging since there are way too many features available. All of them aren't really necessary for beginners. And they've yet to offer them in a "phased" approach.
