It is by far the easiest and well thought out backup solution I've encountered. If you have requirements to archive into AWS, Azure, or GCP, it is extremely easy to configure. You will be up and archiving in minutes. The SLA based job scheduling is very intuitive. The only negative or less appropriate usage I can think of would be the instantiation piece. It takes several hours to instantiate one VM to a cloud environment. This could be our lack of bandwidth, but it is only feasible for a long term DR scenario.

Zerto

If you have very large VMDKs (Virtual Machine Disk), failing snapshots or failing Microsoft VSS processes, then Zerto is the product.
If you have limited CPU or storage space or speed, Zerto is the answer.
If you need "nearly" instant RPO and very fast RTO, Zerto is the answer.
If you don't have the platform issues or are not concerned with RPO and RTO, and cost is a driver, then other products can have an advantage.

Pros

Rubrik

  • Simplified backup. Rubrik integrates well with modern data-center technologies. Rubrik backups are SLA-based, and you can apply SLAs to different levels of your infrastructure, e.g. from granular VM-based assignments to covering whole site with few clicks.
  • Simplified restore. Easy to use interface allows for delegation of restores to any user group.
  • Simplified backup to cloud makes replacing outdated backup targets, such as tape libraries, an easy task.
  • Simplified DR to cloud. In addition to the ability to mount restored virtual machines from the Rubrik appliances itself, Rubrik allows you to spin up backed up to the cloud instances in Azure cloud.

Zerto

  • It is simple to set up and use. In my opinion, one of the most important functions of a tool is its interface. If you have the best product in the world but it takes an arm and a leg to configure and a doctorate degree to use, then the product isn't worth very much.
  • The continuous replication is done very well. The failover and failback process runs smoothly.
  • This has less to do with the product than the company, but Zerto as a company really listens to their customer base. We've always had a very good interpersonal experience with their support and sales teams. Having great people behind their product is definitely one of Zerto's strengths.

Cons

Rubrik

  • I would like to have the ability to set expiration dates for relics. When VMs are deleted, the backups (relics) require manual intervention to remove, and I may not want them removed right away.
  • Integration of multiple clusters into a single dashboard.
  • I'd like to see more granular control of SLA retentions.

Zerto

  • I’d like to see improvements to the usage graphs so I could dig deeper into network bandwidth usage with the ability to see what VPG is using most of the bandwidth
  • The ability to just failover a single server in a VPG would be useful, as this would reduce the number of VPG that have to be created
  • Bulk editing of failover IP addresses would be helpful

We really like the easy setup of this replication solution, as well as the ease of management. Not to mention, our internal IT Economist determined that the Zerto solution would provide the best ROI out of the competing solutions we analyzed. So far, his calculations have been spot on, and we have saved substantially

Rubrik has a simple to use interface and day to day management is very simple yet it doesn't sacrifice flexibility. Expanding capacity as data grows is very easy and does not require downtime. Upgrading is simple and efficient. Setup and configuration are straight forward.

Like any other software you have to learn how it works. Once you understand the product, usability is great.

My team loves the support that Rubrik offers. They are quick to respond and work well within the team. They also like how its set up for them to easily get in to make it fix and the monitoring that comes along with it. This helps us stay ahead of issues with the system!

Zerto support has been very good in our dealings with them. From handling issues to assisting with upgrades, Zerto support has been there to make sure we succeed. Since we have been using Zerto for over four years, we have had a long engagement with their support. We have made recommendations that have been accepted, and support has offered us hints to make our lives easier. It has been a great relationship.

Veeam is the closest to Rubrik but still cannot compare in its simplicity and success rates. The others just don't even compare, heck you have to have a PHD just to use CommVault

Zerto

While more expensive, Zerto does a better job of protecting our servers and keeping the RPO low. It was also supported by our financial core which was a huge factor in our adoption. However, one it was put into our system, we wanted to adopt it company wide. As long as you understand what it should be used for, you will not be disappointed.

Return on Investment

Rubrik

  • Increasing of service's request: old customers asked us backup service after they realized we were using Rubrik
  • New customers, came because of Rubrik, asked for new services
  • Old customers already using previous backup solution decided to leave the service since more expensive
  • Overall, ROI is positive

Zerto

  • ROI is 100% knowing our mission critical databases and servers are being replicated over near real-time.
  • Showing that we test failovers helps us pass our audits.
  • Giving us alerts every 6 months to test failover guarantees that we are more prepared in case of an emergency.
