We use DraftSight to modify old machine plans and old plans but also for the general installation of machines or infrastructures, electric pneumatic, IT. We also use it from time to time to realize hydraulic networks or kinematic diagrams. It is used in the design office and infrastructure departments but also in industrial maintenance.
  • Ease of use.
  • No need for a powerful computer.
  • Accessible to all.
  • Block function.
  • Copy of property.
It is a good tool to realize the kinematic diagram to the Tauleac diagram. It is also interesting to work with to make machine installation plans, assembly plans. It was also easy to use for drawing topo, drawing machine, drawing pieces, drawing others and all modifications in AutoCAD, all versions.

I use it to plan radiation protection within many radiological depts. It's a reliable program, did not crash usually, but did sometimes. But the other CAD I used also crash sometimes, so, no problem with this issue. The major point that led me to prefer it was the price. Second one is the intuitive use of the tools.
  • It is intuitive for use.
  • Its icons are easily identifiable.
  • Final size of file is small.
  • It sometimes crashes with no warning.
  • There is no opportunity to save work prior to crash occurring.

DraftSight is being used for design of suction roll seals, drainage blades and doctor blades all employed in the paper making industry. Drawings developed are used for direct manual machining, conversion to solid models and CAM programs.
  • Dimensioning.
  • Templates.
  • Flexible source ready.
  • Needs editable right click functions.
  • On-screen, quick enter functionality blocks view, need a function key for ON-OFF.
DraftSight is well suited as an affordable alternative to AutoCAD.

Initially, we used DraftSight Free on computers [that] didn't have a licensed copy of Autocad. We were surprised at how compatible it was. Later, when we updated to 2010, we decided NOT to continue with Autocad. Our single perpetual Autocad license now resides on an off-web computer running Win7 and is rarely used.
There's not a day go by that I don't use Draftsight, some days run to 12 hours. I recommend it highly and have to [every] design engineer I know.
  • First, DraftSight is affordable for a small company.
  • Second, it's dwg compatible. Our historical data is useful.
  • Last, its interface is common sense.
  • Like the other CAD package, I don't like [to] have my command prompt at the mouse cursor. I have to look for it and heck, at that moment I don't know where it is. I'd like to keep the command prompt on the command line. My eyes move to that point automatically and very quickly, looking for the cursor takes seconds, but I don't have seconds.
  • The command inputs sometimes are filled in with a number which must be an absolute translation of the @ function eg Line [start point] @ [43346,4432] I didn't put that 43346, 4432 in.
Full function 2d CAD package for an affordable subscription price. Great for small companies or companies which don't do a lot of CAD. This can be added to the list of software you have to have but don't use every day. AND (it's a big "and") it's compatible with dwg so if a consultant needs a drawing to work from, you can give him the dwg that he can work with.
This is not to say you can't use it every day, it's just priced so you don't have to and the interface is easy to use and pretty intuitive.

I use DraftSight to design bespoke vacuum lifting systems and crane support systems. These can vary from 250 kg safe working loads to around 2,000 kg safe working loads. I use the CAD software from start to finish on the project, even down to laying the systems out on the factory floor. This helps me improve the working environment for the operators and keep other operators safe.
  • Operator friendly
  • Easy to use
  • Simple layout
  • Export to different file formats
  • Drawing templates
  • Boarders
  • Worksheets
It is basic enough to do quick and easy drawings for quick layouts, while keeping everything a simple as possible, enabling you to be able to create advanced drawings. Other softwares struggle to keep the simplicity.
I am still getting used to creating a board for my drawings sheets. I think this could be made better and easier.

Used by individual department for light-duty 2D design. The majority of our design work is done on 3D parametric design tools, but there are times when we need a 2D design tool. Due to this requirement, we needed a tool that was low cost yet still powerful. DraftSight fit that bill perfectly.
  • Keyboard shortcut same as AutoCAD
  • Functional tools
  • Easy to personalize
  • Maybe a few more power tools in the base package

We use DraftSight to fill a gap in our 2D drafting and design needs. We create/manipulate/edit 2D flat patterns and DXFs of parts we create in other CAD packages in DraftSight and share those flat patterns with vendors and with other internal departments to manufacture the products we design and sell.
  • Simple yet powerful user interface.
  • Common Command-line functionality for those of us who learned on other 2D CAD Software and prefer the speed of typing.
  • Smart Dimensioning is an improvement over other 2D packages.
  • The layers palette icons are confusing and it requires too many steps to create a new layer. I shouldn't have to open the layer manager to create a layer.
  • Converting splines to polylines and arcs (quickly and easily) that can be cut on CNC equipment. This is a nut no CAD package I've come across has been able to crack to my expectations. I need less "workarounds" and a more straightforward workflow with tunable options for this very frequent process.
DraftSight is well suited to creating simple 2D designs. Quickly drawing a prototype/napkin sketch to illustrate a design to someone.
DraftSight is also great for creating and editing DXFs to prepare them for CNC equipment. We share a lot of DXF files with vendors for parts we can't make in house.

I wouldn't use DraftSight for large assembly 3D design as it lacks parametrics.

I am freelance so I don't have any organization. I am using DraftSight on my own (individual user) for various civil engineering projects, mainly trackwork. The main production I do is cross-section to determine the overall thickness of the track for various areas of the project. I also use DraftSight to just visualize/control drawings.
  • It is missing all the parametric functions (perpendicular, coincident, tangent, etc...)
DraftSight is well suited for drawing but not for design as it can't read lisp.

Schematics, basic machine tool layouts, and data translation.
  • PDF underlays are useful to help create CAD data when the is no DWG option.
  • Image tracing is also helpful for the same reason.
  • Block editing is pretty simple to use.
  • The software can be buggy from time to time. Would be good if DraftSight could clean up after itself, I traded "Good " folder remnants for "ac-system-logfile" text files that need to be deleted manually.
  • Have yet to get 3D ContentCentral to drag and drop models into drawings.
  • Custom paper sizes for plotting. We use a laser engraver that insists on using a square paper size to reorient the zero point.
We use DraftSight primarily because it's a cheaper option than AutoCAD and works just as well.

I am using DraftSight to enter my initial as-built floor plans based on field measurements or traced graphics. These will then be captured for use in other systems to complete product. Or, they will be saved and sent directly to designer or architect for direct use as a DWG to complete design.
  • Providing former AutoCAD users with like commands.
  • Full functionality - soup to nuts.
  • Ease of zoom, pan.
  • Currently experiencing crashes when using certain (simple) functions. No error messages, just says Program Must Close. Forums online show this is world wide.
  • Almost too may options for input - and yet some only have command-line typing.
  • I wish there was an easer way to repeat a command without using the Enter key.
Better dollar value than AutoCAD for a small drafting company. Less appropriate for non-technical folks.

My AutoCAD license was expiring, and I had to open highly detailed, very dense drawings of a 340 ft ship for modifications required for service on the Macondo well blowout. We were working 18 hour days and I had zero time to configure and learn a new drafting package. From the moment I had opened the drawings - I was fully productive. Very good job on the initial configurations and user experience! I continue to recommend this product every time I can.
  • Good configuration out of the box. Does not require fiddling to make it functional.
  • Drop in replacement for me from AutoCAD.
  • Runs fast - even on very large drawings!
  • I may have atypical tendencies for printing, but it seems I have to set a lot of bits each time I print.
  • There are some subtle object selection behaviors, right click behaviors, etc. that seem to be just a bit spread out in the configuration utility.
  • My wife and I work at the office and at home, and each of us use DraftSight on nearly a weekly basis. It would be very nice to have an automatic login/logout. If we forget to logout at the office, and our 'go to my PC' is having trouble, we get stuck pretty quick.
We use it for schematics, label making, templates.

We use SOLIDWORKS for 3D design, drawings.

I am a landscape architect and am the one who uses DraftSight. It provides an excellent and cost effective way to use my CAD skills without having to use AutoCAD, which is the platform I learned on. The commands and functions are very similar and the file extensions work with other third party software.
  • I have been able to bring in terrain PDF images to do site plan work over.
  • I have been able to incorporate images to better explain use of design materials.
  • I have been able to easily share PDF versions of drawings with colleagues and clients.
  • The need to remember the DS commands vs. the ones I remember from AutoCAD.
  • Occasions of errors during a drawing session, where the program shuts down.
I would and have recommended DS because it compares well with much more expensive CAD software's.

Great reliable program that is easy to use, and is an ideal replacement for the stupidly expensive 2D software that is out there with all the features you would expect and more. Perfect for the beginner and experiences user and is compatible with all the common 2D file formats. Definitely worth the annual subscription.
  • Compatible with other 2D formats.
  • Very stable not a single crash in over 5 years use.
  • Easy to use if you have ever used AutoCAD.
Perfect for all 2D drawing requirements. Use regularly for flow diagram, site layouts as well as simple machine design with no issues. Have recommended to several people with various skill levels within our company. Everybody who uses DraftSight is impressed with how easy it is to use. Just like using an older version of AutoCAD.

We use it in the Technical Dept. to solve problems relating to the plant machines.
  • Draw the factory plan.
  • Choose positioning of the machines.
  • Check whether a new plant can be installed.
  • Let it be used even by other engineers.
  • Better perspective view.
  • Wider range of colours.
  • Easier way of displacing draws in the plan.
Very likely to be used in the Technical Dept, not likely in the Administration Dept.

I am the primary Mechanical / Architectural Designer at our firm, with a 35 year history using AutoCAD (you may have heard of it?). While I can't say I was 'disappointed' with AutoCAD, I CAN say that I'm 'happier' with DraftSight, primarily due to a couple simple facts:
1) It was an almost painless transition from AutoCAD-10 to DraftSight Standard, since I am an 'old school' CAD user, adept with keyboard commands as opposed to the icons and pull-downs commonly used by almost everyone else on the planet, I literally was/am able to use the exact same keyboard 'shortcuts' as I did when drafting with AutoCAD. Brilliant move DraftSight. Oh, and the ridiculously reasonable price point for your products didn't hurt either.
Thank You DraftSight.
  • Simple and easy to use.
  • Delivers solid drafting capability to the 'new' or 'veteran' CAD user, no [matter] what your demand level is; beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
  • The thing I appreciate the most about DraftSight has to be its tremendous VALUE, when compared to pretty much every other CAD product out there, INCLUDING AUTOCAD. I'm Just Saying.
  • Though it is probably a minor item, I [personally] think DraftSight's customization tools/settings could be easier to access.
  • For instance, I have not yet re-discovered how to 'toggle on' the relative Distance & Angle running display found at the bottom of the drafting window. I was able to affect it in the previous DraftSight version, but no longer can. How sad for me.
I think DraftSight is 'well suited' for most 'day to day' drafting requirements, where a quick, 'finished and usable', document is the primary goal, as opposed to a product that perhaps includes every tool and function ever imagined by man, but of which only 3-6% are typically ever used by the average drafter. Since my 'CAD' world is mostly tied to construction and mechanical design, those are the areas I can speak to, and I will absolutely say that DraftSight is perfectly suited for THIS environment.

It's being used only by one individual in the company as a complement to the main 3-D modelling software in the Product Development Department. It addresses the need to quickly edit DXF files to be sent for production.
This is a major need because most 3-D softwares will generate a DXF file for parts to be fabricated by CNC machines, but this file will almost always need some kind of editing (assigning layers, changing version, cleaning undesired elements...).
  • Create/Edit DXFs for production, ready to be used in CNC machinery.
  • Open/Edit DWG sent from customers.
  • Create/Edit drawings to be sent to external suppliers.
  • Some functionalities, are difficult to use, such as the "Array".
  • It is designed to open and save DWG by default but since I use mostly DXF, I need to change this every time I open and save a document.
  • It should be offered free with SOLIDWORKS - which is also made by Dassault, since it's a very needed complement for it.
It's a very good and complete alternative to other, more expensive CAD applications. It solves the most demanded needs in simple or even more complex drawings in all areas of design.
It has no compatibility problems with other DWG or DXF editing applications used in the same company or by external clients and suppliers.
I would recommend DraftSight for organisations where specialized or automated CAD features are not required.

Useful to work on .dwg and .dxf documents, such as 2D technical drawings or similar. The software is also useful to sketch or make quick measurements. Some of my colleagues use this software as well. The display is user-friendly, icons are easy to find and the software itself works ok.
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to custom commands
  • Easy to learn
Useful to work on 2D technical drawings archives. The software is good and cheap compared to similar products.

I use DraftSight to draw up site plans that would be submitted by others and I would need to review them from a fire safety point of view.

It allows me to read files created by other professionals and make my edits as well as to draw up my own plans from scratch easily. Never had any problems with it so far.
  • Easy to use.
  • Ability to read files created with other editors.
  • When a plan is ready and needs to be printed, sometimes I do not manage to get the settings right straight away.
I have used other more expensive drafting software in the past, but while using DraftSight I never felt I needed anything else. It has all the facilities I need and whenever someone asks me what software I use that is a one of the main things I highlight.

Would not consider getting anything else.

I work with DraftSight for drawing 2D architectural projects and chose it because its graphical interface's similar to AutoCAD, which I was used to, but at a much more competitive cost. The files generated with AutoCAD can be easily opened and modified in DraftSight, and vice versa: this feature allows the files exchange between different people working on a project at different timings. Realizing mainly 2D projects, I found no program limits: only in recent times, I've experienced some irregular stops while using the CROP or EXTEND command, being unable to use selected cutting or extension limits. Overall, it's a great product at a reasonable cost.

We use DraftSight daily to convert the drawings supplied by our customers and/or made by ourselves to DXF files. The setup of DraftSight is ideal for us as we also work with SOLIDWORKS. The conversion is very easy. The program is used in several places in our production at the machines on site. DraftSight has a clear structure in terms of menus.

We are very happy with this program, and can heartily recommend it.

  • Conversion DWG to DXF
  • Many tools to make measurements in the drawings
  • A more advanced drawing toolbar ( the ability to choose more shapes).
  • I don't have any [more] examples of areas where DraftSight has room for improvement. DraftSight is already very complete.
DraftSight is well suited for implementation in our plant. We can make very simple measurements in the drawings we receive from our customers. Also, it is very easy to use copy to paste to our SOLIDWORKS program. With this option we can modify or make 3D samples to let our customers [know] what the finished product would look like.

DraftSight is used primarily by me and two other engineers. Our geotechnical engineers, often receive ACAD files and we use DraftSight to extract data from those files as well as to create boring location drawings. The Forensic engineer uses DraftSight to generate drawings for the damage assessment and repairs of various structures when the assessment is complete. Our materials testing group often receives drawings in ACAD that need to be converted to PDF for the field technicians to review of their tablets, DraftSight handles this for us.
  • We are a small firm with few needs for drafting tools, and not a lot of budget for it. The power to work with and create drawings that interface seamlessly with our clients (government, Architects and large civil engineering firms) Autodesk products makes DraftSight the cost effective solution for us.
  • I trained on Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor) at my previous company, the transition to DraftSight was seamless for me.
  • When we do get a larger scale project I am able to subcontract drafting work to individuals who use either DraftSight or Autodesk products thus providing me a larger drafting community from which to chose qualified personnel.
  • I am sure that if I used DraftSight on a daily basis I would find some things that could be improved but for my uses, it simply is the best most cost effective solution.
I have recommended DraftSight to numerous companies similar in size to ours, including small companies that specialize in fountain design, retaining wall design and construction inspection services. I also have recommended it to several collogues who were looking for a good CAD program to use in their personal life or their one man semi-retired operation.
