Act-On is well suited for your business if you have a lot of contacts and are averse to the pay by the contact model of competing marketing automation software. Act-On charges by emails sent, not by how many contacts are in the database, so it makes it a great place to store everything, even if you aren't engaging with some of those contacts

Mixpanel is perfect for analytics reports where event and user data for a platform are important. For bootstrapping or economical companies looking for a reliable but free platform, Mixpanel should be the best option as they cover a lot of analytical ground. This is also perfect for SaaS companies, both small and big.

Pros

Act-On

  • Act-On's customer service is exceptional, they are quick and thorough when you are needing help. For example, we could not figure out how to automate a birthday date for our birthday campaign and the representative was able to walk through the process with myself and another team member. This is a strength of Act-On because many other companies do not have customer services that will speak with you, they direct you to blogs or informational sessions.
  • The landing pages that Act-On has created for use on the web is exceptional. The formatting is very user-friendly and the templates are great to navigate. The landing pages allow you to make the page fit whatever campaign or reason you are in need of. This is a strength of Act-On because the landing pages resolve the issue of having to create actual web pages.
  • The spam feature of Act-On's emails is a great add on. This feature allows you to test how the spam alerts are triggered in your email and how you can fix it. This has helped many emails be developed in a way so that they reach many more people than they would have without this feature. many other programs do not have this feature.

Mixpanel

  • Mixpanel's ease of use is easily their best feature, allowing you to quickly create graphs with a few point and clicks. Their UI is also fairly snappy and well-designed.
  • Tying together events with user attributes allows you to properly segment users into cohorts which can then be tracked individually. Proper segmentation is where most analytics solutions earn their keep.
  • Live view is a nice perk that gives you a good feel for who's on your site and what they're doing at any single point in time. This can be further filtered to focus on particular events of interest.
  • Mixpanel has flexible plans that work for smaller startups as well.
  • Their documentation is top notch.

Cons

Act-On

  • Landing Page Design. The drag and drop builder is OK. But it feels very limited for someone who has a good knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. Inevitably, there will be something that you simply can't do in Act-On that you could do in a standard web design environment.
  • No Server Side Scripts. There isn't any way to retrieve data in your lists and add it to a landing page. Basically, you can't use any data stored in an Act-On list and add it to a landing page.
  • It's limited. There is simply some data you can't pull from Act-On and into a 3rd Party Reporting app.

Mixpanel

  • I didn't use the engagement features at all but it seems like they could have a better WYSIWYG editor for the emails for non-technical people using Mixpanel.
  • The custom reports feature seems to be really powerful but I wish they had more resources/templates for creating custom reports. I don't code so it was really hard for me to use this feature...BUT the reports I was able to get help with, were really powerful.
  • I wanted a dashboard area for all of my reports in one view. It seems like they were implementing this when I was moving jobs. If it's not available yet, they definitely need to add a master dashboard page for arranging saved reports.

It's not an all encompassing solution like Google Analytics tries to be, but MixPanel offers much easier to use and understandable data insights. That's valuable when juggling many responsibilities as startup life demands, so a renewal would be easily justified.

It's good, but not quite brilliant. Some parts of the interface are still a bit outdated. The product has been evolving very fast, though, and I believe in a few months it will be up there with the best of them, interface wise as well.

Often we need to integrate with legacy systems and we find the support team on our side during the whole endeavor. Always asking if they can help us further, always willing to do a better job. I think it’s a decent solution, but there has to be something better out there. I don’t trust that everything it’s tracking is accurate, which is problematic when your company is essentially using it as a customer relationship management tool. Mixpanel also used to provide live chat support and then they recently took it away, making it harder to get the support we need.

What impressed me most is that Act-On showed full committment in making our implementation successful, even when it required additional support from their team. This gave me a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings. Most other software software vendors are not anywhere close to being this responsive and effective

Act-On

HubSpot's pricing tiers are much cheaper in some cases, and they provide some of the tools that are included with Act-On Software's premium tiers. I believe Act-On has more versatility in tracking conversion and other rates out-of-the-box compared HubSpot, which is why we chose Act-On for our production metrics and have continued using their products.

Haven't used any direct competitors at the moment as they didn't exist when we first started using MP. That said, it looks like there are a lot of new up-and-coming tools which will be able to do certain things better than mixpanel - if not all of them. Examples include Hotjar, FullStory, and potentially some home-built tools which will funnel data into a centralized data warehouse we can query with SQL. Not being able to use SQL in Mixpanel is a HUGE detriment and could serve as a key reason for dropping the product as soon as a viable alternative appears.

  • Increased employee efficiency for sure, I am able to churn out so many more emails than if I did it manually.
  • Better customer service - we honor opt-outs and unsubscribes automatically, ensuring that our prospects do not receive any more emails than they want.
  • ROI - the ability to schedule emails and plan ahead helps us stay on top of our marketing calendar and produce more marketing messages, leading to more sales. Well worth the investment.

  • Better customer service - we can better understand our individual customers by quickly viewing their Mixpanel profile. It also saves us a lot of time because we don't need to ask them as many questions (such as what browser they use) in order to resolve their issue.
  • Conversion rates - we have significantly increased our conversion rates from users first landing on the website to filling out their contact details to join the website. As a result, we are able to spend more money on our digital advertising and thus we can acquire more users per day.
