In a word, Canva is awesome! Other than the negatives that I enumerated
on the 'improvements' page, there would be very few changes that I would
make to the user interface. Here are some scenarios where Canva shines:
the myriad export options available and quick export functions. Canva
offers downloads of your designs in several formats including .png,
.jpeg, .pdf and many other commonly used file extensions. The variety
lends itself well to users that are in need of a sharp looking design,
made easily and lightning fast and then shareable through ubiquitous
user file extensions. Another area where Canva is an industry leader:
the multiple templates that are labeled with 'real-world' generic terms
that are easily understood by the public writ large. Alongside of the
pre-made 'decks' for early career marketing or social media workers is a
great variety of other pre-made elements that you can insert onto any
canvas in Canva. Where Canva would be less appropriate and/or less
suitable is for strict admin work that could easily be completed in
another software suite such as Microsoft 365.

Hootsuite

The Hootsuite free version is great for small businesses that do not need extremely detailed tracking. It can easily publish content across multiple social media formats. I have not had any issues in content failing to publish because of software error. The at-a-glance analytics provides a lot of information when targeted a specific age range or the time when subscribers are online. It has worked well for my private business.

Pros

Canva

  • templates - their templates inspire my designs so much and save me untold hours
  • elements - Canva includes a lot of great graphics and picture frames that make my designs truly stand out in the crowd
  • dimensions - Social media image sizes change CONSTANTLY! Without Canva guiding me towards the right size I would have redo my designs over and over again!
  • Also...a super under-used feature of Canva is animation. Sites like Pinterest are wanting creators to post video pins now too and by animating my design in Canva, it becomes a video with the touch of a button!

Hootsuite

  • The scheduling feature is fantastic. It allows you to easily plan the exact day, time, and channel that a particular post will be published.
  • Mobile functionality is great with the app. The team could use it on their phones or tablets, which made it easy to make changes or additions on the go or in-between meetings.
  • Social channel integration. All of the major channels are integrated with the tool, making it easy to sign in and start using it.

Cons

Canva

  • I'd like to be able to resize a project more easily, or have the ability to use instagram sizes that are outside the usual square post
  • I have only had it happen once, but it did crash on me once, which was upsetting.
  • it does everything I need it to, so its hard to find a third area for improvement. They're constantly updating.

Hootsuite

  • I personally don't like the way Hootsuite displays multiple social channels on the interface. It's very utilitarian and it does have a modern look, but there's just something about the multiple column look that really bugs me. It feels a bit dated and cluttered.
  • I've used both the free and the pro versions before. Pro is somewhat overpriced for the value that it provides and the free version limits you to too few social profiles which puts you in a position to either overpay or go to another option like Buffer which is cheaper but isn't as reliable. I'd say somewhere around $12-15/mo. would make the single-user Pro tier more palatable.

The ease of use makes Canva a powerful tool for manipulating images, creating original content, and testing ideas without requiring the involvement of graphic design or more time-intensive image editing software such as Photoshop. While it doesn't have the full functionality of a mature software, such as Photoshop, The speed and simplicity of Canva makes it a necessity in a business of any size

At this time we are satisfied that Hootsuite offers the most of what we are looking for at the most reasonable price point. As the social media landscape and monitoring/scheduling software changes, so do our needs. We re-evaluate our tools semi-annually or as new tools emerge onto the market. If we find at any point that we aren't gaining an advantage, then we are open to switching products.

It is super easy to use, but it could be limiting if you're on a small device. It is easier on a bigger device because you can resize graphics and text easier than with your fingers on a small device. I do think it's perfect and easy for non-designers who don't have any training. As long as you have a good eye for visuals, Canva is a wonderful substitute for graphics programs on-the-go.

The layout of horizontal columns for each stream or search is a very cumbersome way to display information. There isn't an easy way to sort, filter, or otherwise re-organize the streams to limit the current view to relevancy. This is one of the primary reasons why we plan to move to another platform.

I haven't ever had issues with a slow-loading site and there haven't been any lag issues within the software. There have been maybe a handful of times over the past six years where I have tried to upload a large image and it will slow down as it loads the last megabyte, but I have yet to have the system time out or require any interference by me

Hootsuite makes passing on articles from the web very easy- when it works! I have had a number of gliches with Chrome where it does not open properly and the solution (after some toing and froing with support) was to uninstall and reinstall. The support staff are always very helpful (which is great!) but the gliches..... well, they suck when you are already busy!

Overall, Canva is easy to use, easy to train others to use, allows for creativity with a professional look without enormous associated costs. The mobile apps works almost as easily, but at a minimum allows for easy review and downloading in a pinch. Really, anyone can learn to use Canva quickly and will immediately benefit from the results.

The system is pretty self-guided so I haven't had much need for support. The support forum and could be better, chat feature and email work when needed without too much time to wait for help. You'll know if they are online to chat or not. I find chat is the fastest way to get questions answered

Would rate it a 10. We received two hours of online training and it was of very high-quality. HootSuite also offers HootSuite University which is an extremely comprehensive training portal with self-paced quizzes, training webinars and videos, best-practice papers, product certification, and access to a network of external experts. This is a fantastic resource.

One person of the organization must take the time to understand the product throughly. Next that person should work with the Hootsuite team to maximize the architecture of your platform and mitigate any problems that may crop up. Also, if a team members voices a concern or is having a problem roll your sleeves up and help them if not it can kill support for the product and end any chances of a renewal. Lastly, set aside enough time to allow for training and refresher training. Solve all problems ambiguity can not be permitted

Alternatives Considered

Canva

As far as I can tell, Canva is pretty unique in its offerings. More robust design platforms can do the same things, of course (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)...and we use those too. But for a quick-turn project to be used by multiple people with no formal design training, Canva is a great bet.

Main other tool we looked at was Buffer. While I like both of them, the free version of Hootsuite allowed us to connect to 3 social media platforms and we prefer the calendar and stream layouts for management of activity.

Very easy to add accounts and share content between them. Collaboration is also easy to manage and can be done on a project-by-project basis. The cloud-based software means it is incredibly fast to add a coworker and have them editing images within minutes. A live internet connection is required to access Canva so this is something to consider if expecting to use the software while on journeys without access to wifi etc

Return on Investment

Canva

  • Visuals have better client reach as they appeal better. Graphics made with Canva are easy, definitely stand out.
  • Free Account offers a lot of functionality, even though the main features are paid, but it still is zero investment and still positive return.
  • The paid version can have a negative ROI in case you are not extensively using it; with a bit more effort and time, one can achieve the almost equivalent result using the free version
Sitanshu Mehrotra | TrustRadius Reviewer

Hootsuite

  • Honestly, Hootsuite has been pretty close to a wash for us. The frequency with which we've had to wrestle with our Facebook Business connection has caused us to repeatedly put Hootsuite on the shelf and opt for manual posting to both FB and Instagram.
  • During the times it functioned properly, Hootsuite probably saved us around an hour of work per day, if you factor in both time required to post to various platforms and potential time spent ensuring/editing consistency between posts.
