Adobe Target

1. We changed ship dates on individual product pages depending on customer location so they would have an accurate timeline for their orders. This really helped lower our volume of customer service calls on tracking orders.2. We have stores as well as an online presence. With Target we were able to advertise sales on b-stock items from our warehouse to our local customers without letting those that live outside a certain radius see the promo.3. If your marketing team doesn't have a tech background this software has a steep learning curve. There is quite a bit of manual configuration required. The image carousel is one example that we struggled with.

Google Analytics

I always recommend Google Analytics. I've never had a site I've worked on that didn't use Google Analytics.

Pros

  • Quickly loads the URL of the site you are A/B testing
  • Allows you to select your user group from pre-installed commonly tested user groups, or create your own test group.
  • Allows you to quickly create mock-ups of the A/B examples to test.

  • Google Analytics does the obvious thing really well: tracks user behavior around our website. But more specifically, it allows us to do some very complicated attribution to behavior, traffic sources and even specific campaigns or devices. Depending on the volume of traffic we are trying to analyze and the purpose, we can narrow things down EXTREMELY well and get a great story to use for data mining.
  • The eCommerce tracking with GA (Google Analytics) is hands down the best. Specifically, its attribution to traffic sources and matching with user behavior that is the best. I have yet to find another tool that can let me track traffic sources, split campaigns down to devices and track which inventory was purchased specifically from that campaign--especially if I am looking back at inventory purchased from a campaign (or in our case, people who signed up for Classes) I can tell all of that from GA.
  • You can use GA to track specific user accounts within a product, and differentiate user behavior within the product based on account roles. A lot of people don't know about this, but with the help of a developer you can leverage a TON of data including creating lookalike audiences that you can sync into AdWords and make your display campaigns highly targeted. Most people think this kind of feature is only available on Facebook ads--nope! :)

Cons

  • There might be areas where Adobe Test and Target needs some improvements, but I am not aware of them. I really had not issues with it when I was using it.

  • I was bummed that they moved some of the functions (keyword data, etc.) over to Google Webmaster tools. (On the bright side, this has prompted me to become more familiar with Google Search Console.)
  • A lot of functions are right there. But it's hard to tell which functions are most important or what they offer.
  • Perhaps this is related to number 2, but the UX is fairly intimidating. All of these tools and subsets of tools are right in front of you, and it's difficult to understand what ones are the most important. A simpler, streamlined format might be a better approach.

I gave that rate, because currently our organization does not need more resources in those fields where Adobe Test and Target has been used. But, I would love to learn more about Adobe Test and Target.

The new features from the Universal Analytics update in late 2013 make the tool that much more useful. There are still unexplored features to consider and all of it amounts to more power and ability to gain insight into your site, what the traffic there is doing, where is came from and where it is leaving to. All stuff eMarketing and web managers will want.

Google Analytics provides a wealth of data, down to minute levels. That is it's greatest detriment: find the right information when you need it can be a cumbersome task. You are able to create shortcuts, however, so it can mitigate some of this problem. Google is continually refining Analytics, so I do not doubt there will be improvements

In-Person Training

The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Implementation

Ensure that documentation is thorough and detailed. Make no assumptions that IT or developers know why they are doing what you're asking them to do, and provide detailed instructions to them.

I think my biggest take away from the Google Analytics implementation was that there needs to be a clear understanding of what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it before you start. Originally the analytics were added to track visitors, but as we became more savvy with the product, we began adding more and more functionality, and defining guidelines as we went along. While not detrimental to our success, this lack of an overarching goal resulted in some minor setbacks in implementation and the collection of some messy data that is unusable.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Google Analytics on my personal website but I can't compare it with Test and Target, because Google Analytics is free which will do less than what Adobe Test and Target does.
Abdulrahman Jasim profile photo
A sub-domain of our site is on WordPress. Google Analytics provides much more information on visitors than the WordPress tool's has available. We're able to incorporate both sites in out data with ease to measure the success of both sites as the WordPress site provides great deal of our back links to drive our main sales site

Return on Investment

  • Increases in conversion of 50-100% depending on the pages.
Bryant Hoopes profile photo
  • Positive marketing campaign feedback - we're able to see what works and what doesn't work in campaigns, so we can design better tests in future efforts
  • Statistically significant data to help understand consumer trends
  • Optimizes our team's time management capabilities, as we can all access and monitor GA metrics to help advance our efforts faster.
