NetApp FAS series

NetApp FAS is a great platform to solve a large variety of different problems. It is ideal for large organizations that have a variety of different business scenarios and locations. This ability allows global support organizations to have standard tools and methods even in a variety of use cases and site sizes. On the flip side, this flexibility is also sometimes the weakness of the platform. In very specialized use cases/areas such as low latency with flash this can be a detriment. We still seem to use specialty arrays to solve these point requirements.

Oracle ZFS

In our case, we use ZFS to store MySQL data. Our MySQL data is of paramount importance, and we need to ensure that the storage that it is kept on is not only fast but also reliable. We can not risk an event that would wipe out all our data. For this reason, we use ZFS to create software RAIDZ to maximize storage redundancy on each MySQL server. We also utilize the ZFS instant snapshot tools to get fully consistent backups of our data without needing to take servers offline for hours at a time. The snapshotting tools are excellent, and allow you to migrate the snapshot data off disk very easily, and import it onto new disks just as easily (so restoring from backups is a cinch). We find ZFS to be a perfect solution for this use case, and I'd expect anyone with similar requirements would see the same benefits.

Pros

NetApp FAS series

  • Backups are a piece of cake with Snapshot technology.
  • Disaster recovery plans are made much easier with SnapMirroring to remote locations.
  • The support is incredible. Auto Support makes it incredibly easy. The Auto Support website also gives you a great view of your NetApp deployment.
  • Redundant paths make updating and maintenance much easier with no downtime.

Oracle ZFS

  • Software RAIDZ. Create storage arrays using best available RAID technologies for excellent disk stability
  • Array images and backups. Allows administrators to instantly create disk snapshots, to minimize time disk is unavailable (on the order of seconds, not minutes or hours).
  • Automatic de-deduplication/compression. ZFS will automatically de-dedup data on disk, allowing for more efficient use of the entire disk for unique data. It will also automatically compress data stored on the disk, allowing for even more usage of the available disk space. Great for infrequently accessed backups (There is some performance cost to compression).

Cons

NetApp FAS series

  • We have had too many troubles with the controllers, had one die completely, and are now fighting an issue where the two don't communicate.
  • They try to nickel and dime you with extra costs for additional features.
  • Software upgrades are too difficult.

Oracle ZFS

  • The CLI tools have a bit of a learning curve to them, there are a lot of tools and commands available. Learning all of them is a large task.
  • The documentation is very dense. This is great, but makes it hard to get up to speed, incrementally, quickly.
  • It's still (relatively) new, so I'd expect getting buy-in from larger enterprises to be a bit of an up-hill battle.
  • Deploying on an existing system requires a completely separate storage array, as you need to reformat and set-up the storage devices without any data on them. This might be prohibitively expensive on time or resources to deploy on existing storage infrastructures.

Usability

It does have a really nice and easy to use web interface to do pretty much anything you need with it. It was very simple to configure our volumes and luns and connect them to our VMWare environment using the interface. It has options to rename, shrink, grow, and other things with our luns and volumes. It was nice and easy to read graphs to see where you stand on your storage usage at a glance.

NetApp support in Brazil is managed by its partners. We know in other countries, such as the US and NO, they have support directly from Netapp. We have a very good NetApp partner working with us since the beginning, on both the implementation and daily support. Very few cases needed to be escalated to NetApp support, most of the cases are handled and satisfyingly closed by the partner.

Alternatives Considered

NetApp FAS series

We ultimately went with the NetApp FAS series based upon the recommendation of our trusted reseller. The device implementation fit directly in with the bigger infrastructure plan/rollout we were in the middle of. However, I did my due diligence when researching the recommendations, and after careful comparison and fact checks, NetApp rose to the top as the most mature and stable platform that did exactly what we needed, and at a price we could accept.

Oracle ZFS

ZFS is so far beyond the other filesystems available right now, offering full suites of tools for data management, backup, recovery, maintenance, monitoring, etc. It's not even fair to compare them.

Return on Investment

NetApp FAS series

  • We rely on NetApp FAS for data replication as well as application and data protection integration capabilities.
  • Negative impact is it has a 5 years life cycle and as a result we find leasing the equipment has provided better ROI than the expense associated with owning and maintaining after the life cycle support ends.

Oracle ZFS

  • Less risk in data loss, due to higher stability and better disk level backup features
  • Faster recovery times in the event of failure, minimizing offline time in the event of failure
  • Great disk performance and stability, less failures means less down time.
