Corporate Learning Management Systems Overview
LMS for Education vs. Corporate Learning & TrainingMany LMS vendors are focused on either educational institutions or corporations, though some offer products for both use cases. Corporations use LMSs to manage and deliver online training; thus, in this context they may also be called training management systems or eTraining / eLearning portals. Also in this category are talent management suites with robust corporate learning modules.
The two main use cases for corporate LMSs are internal (employee training) and external (customer training). Courses may or may not be monetized. Some corporate learning management systems have eCommerce/billing features built in to the registration flow, whereas others might integrate with an online storefront. In terms of customer training, courses may be sold to customers to train them on the software product sold by the company, for example, or the courses themselves may be the company's primary product, in the case of professional training providers like Intelligo Inc., which offers online training for complex software like Infor, Oracle, and SAP.
Some simpler corporate LMSs, like 360training's Learning Management Core (which is free), are purely for distributing courses, managing learners, and reporting on completion/reporting. Most, however, also include content authoring tools and/or a library of pre-made content, as well as learning pathway tools, scheduling features for webinars or offline training, more complex reporting and analytics, and other capabilities. There are also point solutions that focus on course creation and curation--these are sometimes referred to as learning content management systems (LCMS)--or providing course material from subject matter experts, often in the form of videos.
