Considered Both Products
Paycor
Chose Paycor
I was not part of the selection process for either system, but I do find Paycor easier to use. Our company switched from using TriNet to Paycor about a year ago. When we were using TriNet, we did not use it to track time and instead used it for benefits and company …
TriNet
Chose TriNet
We switched from ADP to TriNet for better pricing, more user friendly interfaces for the HR and the employee side, and more pricing transparency.
Chose TriNet
TriNet is so much easier to use than the three products I mentioned. TriNet is also suited to an organization of our size and industry.
Chose TriNet
The above companies were able to provide great payroll resources; however, when it came to benefits for our employees, they fell short, and it became our problem to go out and resource this part of our business.

Paycor is a locally based company that is easily accessible to the client base. It is feasible to visit their HQ for classes, events, and such. Big plus. I’m a fan of keeping it local and having them literally physically accessible is great. They do like to get end user feedback and regularly ask for feedback from clients

I would recommend TriNet to a colleague. We have benefited from the expanded benefits with lower cost, being able to integrate expense reports to be paid through payroll and employees having access to their account via the mobile app. We have only been with TriNet for 8 months so we will see how the first renewal goes.

Pros
Paycor, Inc
  • applicant tracking is great - we were doing this manually previously - being able to communicate with applicants by text or email is really convenient
  • coming from the platform we had Paycor is easy to use and administer
  • great reports with more information than we had before

  • Extensive variety of benefit program plan designs and partners. Something for everyone.
  • One stop shopping for all health and wellness benefits.
  • Continue to add new offerings, such as access to Salary.com at a discount and access to Carta at a discount to manage employee stock programs.
  • On top of compliance by state.

Cons
Paycor, Inc
  • Manual onboarding needs help. Employees are defaulted to the wrong job class and I have to correct their job class after I have hired them.
  • Our default time zone should be the time zone of the employer, not Paycor's time zone.
  • Ability to run a report showing employee time zones.
  • Ability to run a report showing employee Policy Group.

  • Time Clock More User Friendly
  • On Staff Admin ability to assist employees is slightly less than I'd like. I don't like being told to have the employee contact for platform issues. I'd like to advocate more for my employees.
  • Expense Reimbursement better integrated with the payroll functionality.

Price point is the biggest driving factor. Paycor has made some strides in the customer service area and we've seen enough improvements that renewing our contract has become more a reality than a pipe dream. The system functions well and our employees are familiar with how it works, so to make a change would be a huge lift for our team

This is one stop shopping perse. They provide tools for Benefits and 401k. There reports are easy to read and the support given from Trinet support is awesome. Having everything in one place is best then having multiple places for things. Why change if things are working well? All the information is all there when needed.

Usability
Paycor, Inc
Overall, Paycor from a managment standpoint is quite user friendly. Day-to-day tasks such as time sheet approvals, time request off management, and processing Payroll are quick and easy. The reporting can be a bit tedious and is not very intuitive. Paycor from an employee user standpoint is also overal fairly user friendly. It is easy to view your schedule and your team's. Time off request are easy to submit and review. Reviewing remaining time off can be confusing and could use improvement. We find employees frequently needing to confirm their remaining time off when submitting new time off requests.

There is just so much information in the system and sometimes it is attached to other systems in a way that it's hard to know where to find things and a TriNet rep needs to walk you through finding it. Using chat they tend to copy and paste huge strings of instructions into the chat which is challenging to test while scrolling through all that text

Reliability and Availability
Paycor, Inc
I feel like Paycor is always up and running! If they are planning downtime, they communicate it clearly. Every once in a while, I get something that says the system isn't working but it is usually back up within the hour. I typically find by the time that the employees complain about it, that it is resolved within the system.

We had an issue with application errors - took TriNet 5 months to fix it, mean while we had someone manually tracking and keeping up with many requests and questions about the application error which affected time off. When we were all registering for Benefits during open enrollment there were lots of bugs that caused issues with registering for benefits or being able to see what benefits were available

Performance
Paycor, Inc
For the most part, everything moves super fast. There are a few sections (Expense Management) that sometimes take a bit to load correctly. Or if they are interesting, it takes a minute to talk to each other! But reports are quickly downloaded and available! Even data heavy reports run fairly fast!

For the most part pages load quickly. Working for a software company we understand performance is everything, even a few seconds delay can feel like a lifetime, that being said, we ran into a few times where pages didn't load, information didn't load correctly, and an influx in users (like open enrollment) cause things to slow down

Support Rating
Paycor, Inc
I feel like support will transfer you back and forth between departments and put you on hold forever. I believe it is very difficult to see the status of an open ticket. During my experience, it feels like the client has to push all communication and request updates from support regularly.

again tough to say. Our account manager - 10 most others - 6 Benefits - 5 HR support - 2 (the joke in my team is "why ask, he's just going to say "do this and then check with your legal dept.") If we have to do our own research why do we need you. Like I said, great for smaller companies that don't have an HR team. There is almost an attitude of "we are TriNet, this is how we do it, deal with it. You're in our platform now". Every client may have different needs and TriNet needs to be able to adapt to them. The new role of strong HR teams is business partners - TriNet struggles with this and seems to be stuck in old "tell you what to do", plan the Christmas party and buy cake once a month for birthdays. Its timer to move forward!

it's been awhile, but I recall them being helpful. I got through a lot of it and when I needed help, they can walk me through it over the phone. It's also pretty user friendly in general at a platform. I don't really know what else to type, but they came and helped me in person and also when there was something new, they came and talked to me. They have not done that since with the new model that I hate

Online Training

The online trainings are super helpful. They have user guides that you can read through, interactive training that will walk you through it as well as plain web based ones. I've actually never had an in-person training but all of the information you need can be found online. They also will do individual support training if you are struggling with a certain area.

Since this was already implemented. I have another employee briefly train me. Then Trinet rep gave me some training as needed for things that came up. For one payroll preview report I figured it could be done, but I had asked the rep to be sure. One important training was when there was an employee leaving the company.

Implementation Rating

Implementation of any new software is going to be challenging, especially if you are maintaining an existing program concurrently. When it is time for dual-processing (both old and new software) prior to going live, be prepared to be stressed. But trust the process and it will be over soon.

not applicable as I implementation was done 5 years ago and have no recollection of the details of the process. Above it says to skip question if not involved in the process but it will not allow me to skip it as it states explanation requitred thus making this process extremely frustrating.

Paylocity was cumbersome and not very intuitive. I was constantly on the phone with them trying to figure out how to do something. I once called back 4 different times( because I didn’t believe the answer they gave me was how to do what I was asking), explained my problem the exact same way and got 4 different answers. So, I lost trust in the product and started looking for a product I could rely on.

We switched from ADP to TriNet mostly because we were looking for better insurance rates. Others on my staff were doubtful as past experiences with a PEO were not great, but TriNet won the rest of my team over very easily. No one I have talked to could get even close to their insurance rates.

Scalability
Paycor, Inc
I gave it a 10 because we only use it across one organization. However, it has allowed us to break it into multiple departments and layers of management. It is also easy for us to utilize across different locations but still under one master company. They have always provided us support when we decide to change something on an organizational level

We are a small company, do we use it across departments and sites? Yes, we are all remote working, so there are as many sites as there are people. We also have our entire staff using TriNet, so every department from Accounting, Admin, HR, Development, QA, and Management are all using this. Can't say for sure how great the scalability is as we are only about 30 employees

  • Freeing HR's time has been necessary since only two people are in our HR department.
  • Allowing employees to use the mobile app for their timecards has led to less tracking down of out-of-office employees for their hours on payroll weeks.
  • Downloadable workflows have been a real-time saver when preparing documentation for audits.

  • I mainly used the ATS and I had to do a lot of extra work than other ATS's I have used in the past.
  • When hiring a candidate, transferring the information from the ATS to the HRIS is nil, there is a lot you have to manually put in, which can be very frustrating.
  • I like the way how I can upload a candidates resume seamlessly.
